- 7:00 PMIn-person! Bright Bulb Screening Series: Serkis IS Dury in SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL and the animated S/HE
7:00 PM - 11:00 PM
BRIGHT BULB SCREENINGS, Free Double Features Every Second Thursday of the MonthFollow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramCelebration of Outsiders Double Feature!SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL (2010, directed by Mat Whitecross, 113 minutes, U.K.)S/HE (2018, directed by Shengwei Zhou, 95 min., China)- - - -With SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL Andy Serkis, legendary for his motion capture performances as Gollum in LORD OF THE RINGS and Caesar in PLANET OF THE APES, breathes life into the biopic genre with a very very human performance as the iconoclastic English rocker Ian Dury. Stricken with polio and sent to a ghoulish institution as a child, Dury would remake himself as a take-no-prisoners new wave rocker in a music career that would make him a star and an international hitmaker.Director Whitecross (co-director of scathing documentary THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO) doesn't neglect Dury's chaotic life and durable catalog of tunes, showing the demonic carnival barker & the band giving birth to songs like “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” “Reasons To Be Cheerful Pt. 3” and the timeless title cut. Even when it dips into melodrama, it is with a top-rank cast including Olivia Williams (RUSHMORE), Ray Winstone (SEXY BEAST), Naomie Harris (“Moneypenny” from the James Bond series), and a villainous Toby Jones. With Dury's son Baxter forging his own impressive musical career in Europe, their father/son relationship takes on an added resonance."Tackling the rise and fall of bolshy proto-punk gobshite Ian Dury, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is a riot of clattering noise and kaleidoscopic colour, off-kilter imagery and foul language, all the good things the title promises and much more,"- Tom Huddleston, TIME OUT“The film is a full-throttle rifle through the life of a fiercely chaotic figure, a man whose disability was clearly not nearly so terrifying to him as the prospect of an ordinary existence.”- Ben Child, GUARDIANtrailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tUR7EisSl4- - - - - -Shengwei Zhou's 2018 animated feature S/he (alternately listed as “S He”) evokes the work of offbeat animators Jan Svankmajer and The Brothers Quay although with his own visual aesthetic as his spins his dark, dark fable of a red high heel forced to disguise herself as a tough leather boot to raise to daughter in this dystopic, clothing-centric world of work and toil.Spending six years in production, Zhou's visual imagination never flags as we learn all the ghastly details of commerce in this fantastical world, that somehow resembles our own. To list the details would be to suggest I'd lost my senses, it's best to come and witness this one-of-a-kind triumph of wordless storytelling for yourself.“If the midnight movie circuit still existed, this would be a natural addition to its repertory. As is, 'SHe' will have to find champions among adventuresome viewers of adult animation — within which subgenre, this accomplished curiosity constitutes a major event.”- Dennis Harvey, VARIETY“‘S He’ is a blistering commentary on systemic sexism. You will never look at cherries the same way again. Please watch this movie.”- George Kapaklis, Rough Cut Film-dot-comtrailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RjdB8tWMgYAdmission is FREEFollow brightbulbscreenings on Instagram, Facebook

- 8:00 PMIn-person! Bowerbird presents interdisciplinary artist eddy kwon
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Bowerbird is pleased to present interdisciplinary artist eddy kwon and the Philadelphia-based trio Totally Automatic at The Rotunda. ABOUT THE ARTISTeddy kwon (b. 1989) is violinist/violist and interdisciplinary artist based in Lenapehoking (Brooklyn, NY). Her practice connects composition, performance, improvisation, dance, and ceremony to explore transformation & transgression, ritual practice as a tool to queer ancestral lineage, and the use of mythology to connect, obscure, and reveal. As a composer-performer and improviser, she is inspired by Korean folk timbres & inflections, textures & movement from natural environments, and American experimentalism as shaped by the AACM. Her work as a choreographer and movement artist embodies an expressive release and reclamation of colonialism’s spiritual imprints, connecting to both Japanese Butoh and a lineage of queer/trans practitioners of Korean shamanic ritual. She is a United States Artists Fellow, Johnson Fellow at Americans for the Arts, Andrew W. Mellon Artist-in-Residence at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Van Lier Fellow and Artist-in-Residence at Roulette Intermedium, and a recipient of the National Performance Network Creation Fund Award. Recently, eddy was featured in The Wire Magazine’s Issue #463 (“absolutely stunning”) and as one of the Washington Post’s “22 for ‘22: Composers and performers to watch this year.” In addition to an evolving, interdisciplinary solo practice, she collaborates with artists of diverse disciplines, including The Art Ensemble of Chicago, cellist Tomeka Reid, sculptor Senga Nengudi, Degenerate Art Ensemble, Holland Andrews, and many others. www.eddykwon.net Totally Automatic was formed by Anne Ishii, Eugene Lew and Matthew Smith Lee in the summer of 2021. - 8:30 PMOnline! Lyle Holdahl LIVE from ElectricLattéLand
8:30 PM - 10:30 PM
Lyle Holdahl has been writing and performing progressive pop and symphonic rock since 1977. Former bands include Harlequin Mass and Stubborn Puppet, nowadays recording music under three monikers: FireMonkey (Euro-dance-synth-pop); Art & Science Projekt (for ambient / instrumental / experimental music); and under his own name ( for symphonic / progressive rock, and movie soundtracks.)This virtual concert will be the WORLD DEBUT of two new sets of original music composed and written by Lyle Holdahl, brought to you by the good folks of Reusable Records. Symphonic Synth Pop backed by "homemade karaoke," this unique performance will be a showcase of Lyle's artistic experimentation and prowess over the last two years in isolation with songs about "food, romance, OCD, the usual.""First known to the prog world as a member of HARLEQUIN MASS, Lyle Holdahl is quite the Journeyman. Since those early days, he had gotten involved with numerous musical styles, and projects. Primarily a keyboardist, he has played with many other artists, and written music for some of them. His compositions can also be heard on movie soundtracks. In the '80s, he was a member of the Band Stubborn Puppet. He currently composes for three different music acts. Fire Monkey is a Euro-pop outfit, he does instrumental ambient/experimental for the Art & Science Project, and progressive music under his own name. In this form he has recorded the albums "Prog" and "Prog 2." Both were released in 2000. As far as influences are concerned ... you name it, and it will probably be listed (in all forms of music). His music shows this as well. It is very hard to place him under a small umbrella."Tune in to the livestream on Friday June 16 at 8:30pm Eastern HERE: https://www.youtube.com/live/h1EhdgPSVLU?feature=share

- 8:00 PMIn-person! Fire Museum Presents: FALSA & KAMYAR ARSANI/SUNKEN CAGES (DUO)
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Fire Museum Presents:Falsa:Falsa is a New York based Sufi music ensemble that began in Philadelphia in 2013 and has since established a strong following on the East Coast. The instrumentation of vocal, harmonium, electric bass VI, Spanish guitar, drum set, tabla, Carnatic violin, and trumpet brings traditional melodies into a modern context in a way that is at times meditative and, at others, explosive. The lyrical content comes from the likes of classic poets Amir Khusrau, Rumi and Hafez, who touched on something essential to human existence in their writings, something that becomes even more palpable to the audience as singer Umer Piracha offers brief, soulful translations between songs. The overall feeling of a Falsa performance is that of virtuosity and transcendence. Umer Piracha on Vocals, accompanied by Siddharth Ashokkumar on Carnatic Violin, Tom Deis and Paul Arendt on Guitars/Harmonium, Adam Hershberger on Trumpet, Roshni Samlal on Tabla, and Greg Foran on Percussion. Kamyar Arsani & Sunken Cages: Iranian multi-instrumentalist Kamyar Arsani and Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Sunken Cages create their own brand of digital folk music that draws on Sufi mysticism, traditional Persian Music, street rhythms from Mumbai and contemporary electronic music at once. Momin accompanies Arsani’s vocals and daf (frame-drum) with a masterful blend of electronic and acoustic percussion, including live-looping via his unique drum-loop performance system. Kamyar Arsani is an Iranian multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter based in Washington DC. Through his solo work and numerous collaborations, Arsani creates music across an array of styles, ranging from classical Persian music to genre-defying electronic experimentation. A teacher, performer and scholar of the daf (the Iranian frame drum). Arsani has been a featured artist at the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, Voice of America, Georgetown University and numerous other stages throughout the region. Along with his solo work and collaborations, Arsani is also the singer and lyricist of Time is Fire, a pan-cultural punk band. Sunken Cages is the moniker of drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin, who studied with US Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille. He has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians including US avant-Jazz legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (AACM/Chicago.) In addition, he has also led his own Jazz/global group Tarana on international stages for the past 14 years. As Sunken Cages, Momin plays electronic and acoustic drums. He layers loops while manipulating them in real-time to blur the lines between composition and improvisation. While rooted in Indian and Black Music traditions, he is also influenced by the street sounds of underground dance music from Sao Paolo to Durban to Mumbai and beyond. He is signed to OnTheCorner Records (UK). Admission is FREE. Registration is encouraged: eventbrite.com/e/falsa-kamyar-arsanisunken-cages-duo-tickets-516666071127
