Art x Data Science is a panel discussion with imaginative thought leaders whose work and practice intersect art and data science. The event invites Mindy Seu, LaJuné McMillian, and Dr. Synatra Smith to share their recent projects followed by a discussion and Q&A moderated by Eto Otitigbe, the polymedia artist commissioned for the public artwork, Cascode.
Cascode Project Summary Cascode is a newly commissioned landmark public art installation in Philadelphia by polymedia artist Eto Otitigbe. Supported by the Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation’s (PHDC) Percent for Art program and Penn Engineering, the installation translates hard data into an interactive artwork that’s representative and inclusive of the West Philadelphia community. In all stages of Cascode’s development and launch, Dash will manage and produce public programming and engagement activities. About the Artist Eto Otitigbe’s current public commissions include: Peaceful Journey (Mt. Vernon, N.Y., 2022); Emanativ (Harlem, N.Y. - 2023); and Passing Point (Alexandria, Va. - forthcoming). He was a member of the Design Team for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at University of Virginia Charlottesville, Va.), where he contributed to the creative expression on the memorial's exterior surface. His curatorial projects include directing the es ORO Gallery in Jersey City, N.J. (2007-09) and co-curating, alongside Amanda Kerdahi, the Topophilia Exhibition in Nees, Denmark (2017) as part of the ET4U Meetings Festival in Denmark. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, an M.S. in Product Design from Stanford University and an MFA in Creative Practice from the University of Plymouth. Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson will be traveling in the U.S. along with his band The USA Clangers in early November.The USA Clangers is a motley crew of 21st century sound outsiders/media scavengers cherry-picked by Icelandic composer Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson to realize his gentle alien outsider Low Tech/High Life chamber music for all sentient beings. Playfully pitched between chaos and control, the primordial and the undiscovered, Gunnarsson’s ill-at-ease ambience is built around a singular approach to rhythm that maintains the slippery sense of “everything is about to fall apart yet we all find a way to move as one undulating organism.” The USA Clangers read from animated scores that scroll on laptop and tablet screens, but use prepared and found percussion, classical guitar, viola, recorders, toys, and household objects. The group’s name references a late 1960s British children’s TV series in which soup dragons and knitted aliens try to find peace on a hollow planet. RIYL Harry Partch, The Shadow Ring, Fat Worm of Error.In addition to Guðmundur they are:Jonathan Pfeffer writes, organizes, makes music, draws, solves and creates problems. His interests right now explore small everyday acts of defiance and subtle comedies of error as responses to the anonymizing influence of the built world on collective ritual and individual identity. His hope is always to document unique experiences of time and space. He lives in Philadelphia, PA.Liz Meredith is a violist, improviser and composer from Baltimore, MD. Her music explores intersections between acoustic chamber music, instrumental improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, and ambient music. She has performed at rock clubs, D.I.Y. spaces, art galleries, chamber music venues, music festivals, and academic conferences throughout the United States.Shayna Dunkelman is known for her versatile and unique percussion techniques, and use of electronics to access a sonic pallet not found in acoustic percussion. In addition to solo performances, Dunkelman tours with the Puerto Rican band Balún, multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells, electro-acoustic duo Peptalk, Pakistani singer and author Ali Sethi, and her percussion duo Nomon with her sister Nava Dunkelman. The Secret Cinema presents anotherNATIONAL FILM REGISTRY SHORT FILMS programOn Thursday, November 10, the Secret Cinema will present, for the second time, a special program of short films paying tribute to the National Film Registry (the last was in 2018).In our current, divided political climate, the legislative branch of government often seems frozen, but in 1988 it managed to pass, of all things, laws mandating the establishment of "a National Film Registry to register films that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." This unusual legislation was a side effect of public controversy over the colorizing of classic black and white Hollywood films, and the fear that future generations would not be able to see such works as they were originally created. In 1989 the first group of 25 titles was named to the Registry (including THE WIZARD OF OZ, NANOOK OF THE NORTH and STAR WARS). The National Film Registry today lists 825 films, including many obscure and "orphan works" -- not just features, but short films that encompass early cinema, documentaries, cartoons, newsreels, educational films and even home movies.A quick look through the Secret Cinema archive shows that we hold prints of over 50 films from this list -- including one title (the locally made THE JUNGLE) whose inclusion was the result of our lobbying. Quite a few are feature-length, but since any of those would constitute a whole show, we'll instead focus on shorts for our NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY SHORT FILMS program, to show the variety of our film heritage that is honored in this important pantheon.There will be one complete program, starting at 8:00 pm. Admission is free.As always with Secret Cinema events, the films will be shown using real film (not video) projected on a giant screen.Highlights of the NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY SHORT FILMS program are:PEEGE (1972, Dir: Randall Kleiser) - Main Line-raised Randall Kleiser is best known for directing crowd-pleasing features like GREASE, THE BLUE LAGOON and HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KID. But the one-time housemate of fellow U.S.C. student George Lucas never made a film more artful, or touching, than PEEGE, a one-off project funded by the Directors Guild Foundation. It starred Bruce Davison (WILLARD), who had earlier run with Kleiser on the Radnor High School track team. PEEGE recreates an incident in the director's life, when he visited an ailing grandmother in a Pennsylvania nursing home. The film ultimately received wide distribution in the non-theatrical realm, and has been used for instruction in medical schools, hospitals and nursing homes. The cast also included such recognizable faces as William Schallert (THE PATTY DUKE SHOW) and Barry Livingston (MY THREE SONS). The title role of the grandmother was played by Jeanette Nolan, whose screen debut was as Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles' MACBETH (1948).THE RIVER (1938, Dir: Pare Lorentz) - THE RIVER is an art film disguised as social advocacy disguised as a documentary. As with THE PLOW THAT BROKE THE PLAINS and VALLEY TOWN (entries seen earlier in our "Famous Films" series), THE RIVER documents not only its subject, but a fascinating, long-gone time when the federal government funded politically progressive and artistically avant-garde art. Lorentz made this project after the success of THE PLOW... to tell what he described to his bosses as "the biggest story in the world -- the Mississippi River." The subject encompassed several issues of importance to the FDR administration: flood control, soil and timber conservation, and rural electrification, and turned them into a powerful narrative via rhythmic and lyrical narration (read by baritone Thomas Chalmers), discordant music (by modernist composer Virgil Thomson), and striking photography (by, among others, Floyd Crosby). THE RIVER was, like THE PLOW..., a popular and box office success, but it had ruffled many feathers. Lorentz was slated to head a new agency established by presidential order, the U.S. Film Service, but before this project could get underway its budget was written out of existence by a hostile congress. Named to the National Film Registry in its second year.KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE, CALIFORNIA (1914, Dir: Henry Lehrman) - A remarkable, historic film that qualifies as both documentary and constructed slapstick comedy. The film was completely improvised around a simple recurring gag: A newsreel crew covering a real-life contest of children's gravity-powered "soap box" cars is continually frustrated by a camera-hogging interloper. The troublemaker was Charlie Chaplin, in his second-released film appearance -- but the first to feature his "little tramp" characterization, in brush moustache, derby hat and baggy trousers. The costume was created for a film he'd shot earlier (MABEL'S STRANGE PREDICAMENT) that was ultimately released two days later. Thus the world was introduced to the screen persona that Chaplin was to inhabit (and enhance) for the next 26 years.Plus DUCK AND COVER and THE HOUSE I LIVE IN.Admission is FREESeating is limited.

WPO is known for the intensity and chaos of their dance parties, as well as their curious line-up of musicians: spinning tubist, Elliott's hellfire sax, and the voice of Petia Z.“The most dazzling display of technique, among hundreds of those, was the wild series of glissandos from West Philadelphia Orchestra trumpeter Koofreh Umoren. Their sousaphone player, Jimmy Parker, has terrifying chops as well, at one point taking an intro that hit notes that big fat low-register horns aren’t supposed to be able to reach, not even close. That beast of a band made a good headliner: in a short, barely half-an-hour onstage, they finally gave the night’s younger contingent the chance to cut loose to a pretty much straight-up 4/4 beat after an evening of the hypnotic kinetics that started a little after seven. Matthew Lo Re – A creator on a quest of self progress. Designing , soldering , constructing my own instruments. In a few words, dreamy cerebral dinner music. Errant Space is a project of composer/recordist Craig Chin from Beacon, NY. Its goal is spatio-temporal dilation through sound. Performances are site-specific, spontaneous compositions influenced by both the physical characteristics of the space they are performed in and the occupants of that space. Recent Errant Space projects include the soundtrack for the documentary Baato, and a soundtrack for the tabletop adventure card game Dark Venture. Craig has also produced the monthly Errant Space Podcast for over seven years, which often features interesting experimental and electronic musicians. Additionally, Craig has curated several music series, including a monthly electronic and experimental night and the Space Out, Outside series. He also has a weekly radio show, The Space Program, on Vassar College’s Station WVKR.Irman Peck – is a conceptual cellist/bassist/improvisor from Philadelphia, PA. A 40 + year Improvisor/Composer/Performer, Irman is a veteran of various East Coast Underground, No Wave and experimental music scenes. I. Peck plays both electric and acoustic Bass and Cello as well as other Strings, often using electronic processing. Irman is a founding member of Greg Weaver’s Los Dominos, Brian Kelly’s Suns and Wormhole Superette with Tracy Lisk. Irman also presently performs in the duo Fronds & Fringe with R. Waleski. Private university police forces from the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Drexel University and other organizations also participated in the crackdown. “Testimony: 52nd St. and the Invisible Violence of UPenn” is a short stop-motion animation film based on the experience of 52nd St. resident and UPenn employee, Amelia Carter. Through her testimony, Amelia explores what led to UPenn’s participation in the attack and attempts to disrupt the normalization of everyday acts of institutional violence perpetrated by the university. Through her own self-reflection, Amelia invites the audience to question the societal conditioning that leads to complicity in the face of this violence and imagines a world where community care is prioritized over policing. ABOUT THE ARTISTOne of Philadelphia’s hidden gems, Bismuth Quartet takes the string quartet into new territory as performers, composers, collaborators, and improvisers. Past and future projects include cross-disciplinary collaborations, diverse programming, and performing original compositions. Equally at home playing modern, classical, experimental, and improvised music, Bismuth has performed at notable venues such as the Mann Center, Union Transfer, and the Mütter Museum, among others. The Quartet presents a unique experience to its audiences and has partnered on productions across Philadelphia performing on the Moon Viewing Platform as part of the 2019 Site/Sound Festival, playing spectral music presented by Fire Museum Presents at the Icebox Project Space, and collaboratively composing and performing scores to silent films alongside Not So Silent Cinema. Bismuth Quartet maintains active projects across the Philadelphia music scene at-large and has been featured with Jazmine Sullivan, Arcana New Music Ensemble, Philadelphia Jazz Project, indie rock bands Whitney, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, with NYC-based performer/improviser/composer Anaïs Maviel, and video artist/choreographer Nora Gibson aka CHROMA. Bismuth encourages the creation of new work and is in the midst of a commission in collaboration with composer Adam Berenson to be recorded in the fall of 2022. Patchwork: A Storytelling Guild presents Wit & Wisdom, a Story ConcertThis live event is open to the public. Patchwork returns with a new cache of stories to celebrate the folkloric art, craft, and practice of the oral tradition of storytelling. Featured in this amazing lineup are, in alphabetical order, Michele Belluomini, Ingrid Bohn, Ray Gray, Queen Mother Imakhu, and Denise McCormack. According to McCormack, president of Patchwork and host of the event, “Tellabration is a hallmark event, celebration of story, and we're working hard to bring an assortment of rich, vibrant, and humorous tales to our audiences this season. The tellers are extraordinary and each adds a new perspective and twist through their individual performance styles and interpretations. There's a reason that folktales have endured for millennia; they're truly timeless because they have the capability to offer something special to everyone of every age and era." Intro to Analog Video Synthesis On November 20th, please join the Sound Museum Collective for an evening of light and sound experienced through the art of video synthesis. An experimental artistic technique developed in the 1960s, video synthesis is the generation and distortion of analog electrical signals to produce streams of evolving prismatic spectacle. Unlike traditional forms of video editing, video synthesis can be manipulated on the fly, creating opportunities for improvisational narratives to emerge. Through this event, we will bring this rare and often inaccessible technology to the public. The event will feature live performances showcasing the video synthesizer in conversation with music and spoken word, as well as a presentation demystifying video synthesis technology for total beginners. The event will also announce a 6-week workshop series focused on collaboratively learning video synthesis that we invite you to apply for. There will be flashing lights. The venue is ramp-accessible via the right side of the building towards the back. Sturdy armless chairs. Project support provided by the Velocity Fund administered by Philadelphia Contemporary with generous funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
