![]() Thu Feb 2, 5pm-7:30pm and Fri Feb 3, 9am-5pmFull schedule and registration at: https://www.asc.upenn.edu/news-events/events/crisis-time-media-movements-and-abolition-time-ruptureWe live in a time of rupture. The social, economic, and ecological crises that confront us today compound longstanding inequalities on a global scale. In response to these asymmetries, we are witness to a flourishing of rebellions and resistance movements emerging over the last decade. A major challenge facing contemporary movements is how to harness new and existing media in order to articulate critical interconnections between crises and forms of resistance. Across three main themes—policing the crisis, mediating the crisis, and powering through the crisis—we call together scholars and activists to ask: What is the relationship between media and movements today? What role do media play in building effective resistance? What are the problems and possibilities of the current media ecosystem as we organize to build an effective movement of movements? We convene this conference at an important time for movements to deepen their connections with each other and articulate a positive vision of a free society. This two-day convening will therefore aim to both understand the moment while putting forward possible pathways towards our collective future. Admission is FREE. Registration is HIGHLY encouraged, as space is limited. Full schedule and registration at: https://www.asc.upenn.edu/news-events/events/crisis-time-media-movements-and-abolition-time-rupture

![]() Bowerbird is pleased to present Philadelphia favorites Alash at The Rotunda for a FREE concert. Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage. Catch a snippet of what Alash can do at https://youtu.be/-xia8OERlNU *Please note: The performance starts at 7:30pm. Seating and admission to the building for the performance will be on a first come first served basis. Registering on Eventbrite does NOT guarantee admission. ![]() *Unfortunately Theo Bleckmann will not be able to perform on this evening’s concert as was previously planned. We’re excited, however, to announce that the extraordinary vocalist Thann Scoggin (member of Roomful of Teeth) will be performing with the ensemble in his stead. ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE Ensemble Terrain was formed as a touring outfit following the release of Cooper’s album “Terrain” (New Amsterdam Records, 2020). Pitchfork characterizes the album as “surprisingly magnetic meditations on time . . . vital and compulsive . . . firmly rooted both in the distant past and music much closer to the present” while San Francisco Classical Voice describes it as “a beautiful way to look at sky when sky is not available.” In their individual careers, GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s work has been hailed as “from another planet” (New York Times) and “transcendent” (Village Voice), and cellist Ashley Bathgate has been praised as an “eloquent new music interpreter” (New York Times) and “a glorious cellist” (The Washington Post). “Stunning” vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jodie Landau (Pitchfork) is a member of the acclaimed vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, while Jacob Cooper has been lauded as “richly talented” (New York Times) and a “maverick electronic song composer” (New Yorker).Admission is FREE/pay-what-you-can. More info: https://www.bowerbird.org/event/ensemble-terrain/ PLEASE NOTE: As of January 2023, masks are welcomed, but no longer required at Bowerbird events. |
