On the outskirts of the capital of Chad, determined single mother Amina (Achouackh Abakar Souleymane) works tirelessly to provide for herself and her 15-year-old daughter Maria (Rihane Khalil Alio).

When Amina discovers Maria is pregnant and does not want a child, the two women begin to seek out an abortion, condemned by both religion and law. Fighting to procure this simple yet inaccessible procedure, they must navigate a patriarchal network of doctors, relatives, and neighbors. In the process, mother and daughter forge a connection stronger than any they've ever known.

Fire Museum Presents: Kiranavali Vidyasankar:

By age two Kiranavali Vidyasankar was hailed as a child prodigy, being able to identify over 200 ragas (melodic scales), demonstrate the 175 talas (rhythmic cycles) and answer numerous other technical questions pertaining to Carnatic music. The Indian Express (June 14, 1975) declared her to be “astounding in her precocity”, while The Hindu (June 1976) wrote, “More fantastic is the manner in which 3-year old Kiranavali is able to tell the raga even at the commencement of its outline.”

Kiranavali’s father, Narasimhan, an outstanding musician and teacher, and son of the renowed Gotuvadyam Narayana Iyengar, saw Kiranavali’s potential even as a toddler and started training her in the intricacies of music. Under his watchful guidance, she grew from prodigy to musician with sure-footedness. Her early performances were in tandem with her older brother, K N Shashikiran. As a pair of bright young children, this unique brother-sister duo won much appreciation from connoisseurs, critics and the music-loving public. Both of them branched out as soloists during their teens.

Kiranavali’s childhood and youth were replete with fun-filled music sessions and intensity of learning with her older brother, Chitravina Ravikiran. His positive and value-based approach to music and life have deeply influenced her.

In her early teens, Kiranavali had the opportunity of closely following and learning from T Brinda, a great repository of some of the best Carnatic treasures. For nearly a decade, Kiranavali assimilated a sizeable number of compositions of unparalleled quality in Brindamma’s repertoire. She immensely values the extraordinary privilege she had in accompanying her guru in several public and private performances as well as radio and television recordings. After Brindamma’s demise in 1996, Kiranavali learnt a few pieces from her equally renowned sister, T Mukta, and accompanied her in a hugely successful performance at the Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana (Mar 2002).

Around the age of seventeen, Kiranavali discovered her interest in and talent for Chitravina, an ancient South Indian slide instrument her family is famed for, and started pursuing it with great passion. Within a span of two years, she made rapid strides on the instrument that not only allowed her to team up with Ravikiran but also perform solo at many prestigious venues in India such as The Music Academy (Chennai), Krishna Gana Sabha (Chennai) and Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts (Mumbai).

The rich musical environment in which she grew up, the thorough training from her illustrious gurus, the many years of hard work and good work ethics, have sharpened Kiranavali’s innate talent and keen musical acumen. She is recognized and regarded as a musician with sound scholarship and a distinct voice. Some of her notable works include Lakshmi Prabhavam, a special dance production in which she was a lead singer, and her much acclaimed concert featuring a single piece in 101 and 108 ragas respectively. These performances not only received rave reviews and special mention at sell-out shows, but also established her credentials as a worthy torchbearer of her illustrious music lineage.

Kiranavali’s vocal career has taken her to many renowned centers across India, USA, Canada and Europe. They include the National Center for Performing Arts (Mumbai), India International Center (New Delhi), India Habitat Center (New Delhi), Narada Gana Sabha (Chennai), Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha (Chennai), Brahma Gana Sabha (Chennai), Karthik Fine Arts (Chennai), The Music Academy (Chennai), Jaya TV’s Margazhi Mahotsav, Shanmukhananda Fine Arts (Mumbai), South Indian Cultural Association (Hyderabad), Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival (Ohio), Bharati Kala Manram (Toronto), Ethnological Museum (Hamburg) and Reitberg Museum (Zurich). She has also been featured in prominent television networks such as Doordarshan, Jaya TV, Raj TV and SVBC, besides recording for various radio networks in India and the United States. Kiranavali has lent her voice for documentaries on various great masters including her guru, T Brinda and her legendary grandmother, Vina Dhanammal, and has cut her own CD albums as well.

A Tribute to Our Heroes - An interactive vocal workshop experience

A Tribute to Our Heroes is a free interactive educational vocal workshop moderated by "Philly's Class Act" Ella Gahnt. Each participant will choose songs from their musical heroes. Participants will have the opportunity to perform with a live band and receive constructive feedback on performance, voice use, and band direction. ABOUT THE ARTISTBhob Rainey works with sound, both acoustically and electronically. He, like a lot of people, is interested in quite a few things, but he is especially invested in matters relating to consciousness – its possibilities, limitations, absurdities, threats and futures – how to “think” climate change, how to “think” the nonhuman stuff that makes us. As a result, ideas from philosophy, technology, psychology, and the plain old grind worm their way into his work. Rainey has spent a lot of time in recent years working with theater company New Paradise Laboratories, and with with choreographer JungWoong Kim creating the site-specific installation / performance, SaltSoul.  Past collaborations include Nmperign with Greg Kelley and the Boston Sound Collective.

Growing up in Chicago in the 1950’s, Thurman Barker was exposed to the city’s rich musical heritage, regularly hearing R&B, doo-wop, soul, jazz and blues music. Accordingly, he began his professional career at age seventeen by anchoring the rhythm section for blues legend Mighty Joe Young. In Thurman’s own words, performing with Mighty Joe Young was an experience that rooted him in the blues and the many ways to play the blues: fast, slow, happy and sad. Plus this first experience on the road was thrilling and exciting performing for crowds from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, three nights a week. Barker’s fondness for classical music goes back even earlier to when he attended the American Conservatory at the age of twelve to study drum lessons but he was advised to study music theory before drum lessons. This advice rooted him through his career. His association with the AACM taught him about creativity and finding his own voice. Barker has many foundational influences with Harold Jones being his one and only drum teacher, Edward Poremba from Roosevelt University with whom he studied classical percussion and Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams who taught him composition and how to combine it with improvisation. He has recorded with Cecil Taylor, Muhal Richard Abrams, Amina Claudine Meyers, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Sam Rivers, Billy Bang, Joseph Jarman, and Henry Threadgill. Under his record label Uptee Productions, he has recorded 6 CDs. He has composed 2 pieces for Chamber Orchestra, “South Side Suite” and “Pandemic Fever”. Barker is continuing to write for the Chamber Orchestra. In addition he has led the Jazz program at Bard College since 1993 where he is Professor of Jazz Studies.

Joining Barker is a group of Philadelphia musicians from across the city's creative music spectrum. They include Julius Masri (Mephisto Halabi, Night Raids) on drums, percussion, and electronics, Dan Blacksberg on trombone (Anthony Braxton Quartet, Deveykus), Tessa Ellis on trumpet (Arcana Ensemble), Salina Kuo (River Full of Fruit, Rehearsing Philadelphia) on marimba and percussion, and Matt Engle (Shot X Shot, Sonic Liberation Front) on bass.

Philadelphia-native Dan Blacksberg has created a singular musical voice as a trombonist, composer, and educator. One of the foremost practitioners of klezmer trombone and a respected voice in jazz & experimental music, Dan is known for a formidable virtuosity and versatility. This has led to performances with artists such klezmer masters as Elaine Hoffman Watts and Adrienne Cooper, and experimentalists like Anthony Braxton and extreme doom metal band The Body. Dan composes music from danceable klezmer melodies on Radiant Others, to genre-busting projects like his Hasidic doom metal band Deveykus and Jewish-Jazz suite Name Of the Sea, Dan forges music that “aims to infuse the fearless avant-garde with timeless sounds and techniques, and vice versa.” (WXPN’s The Key)

Dan currently teaches jazz and klezmer at Temple University, coordinates the Instrumental and Dance programs at Yiddish New York with Deb Strauss, and is the musician-in-residence at Kol Tzedek Synagogue. He also makes the Radiant Others Klezmer Podcast.

Salina Kuo is a Philadelphia-based person (settler of Lenape territory) and an active songwriter, improviser + multi-instrumentalist. She plays vibraphone + leads indie-RnB project “St. John’s Wort” and plays guzheng in Chinese-American folk duo “River Full of Fruit.” She holds a B.M. in music education from Temple University, where she studied orchestral repertoire, jazz vibraphone, latin percussion, and drumset. She has performed at the Oh My Ears New Music Festival, Toronto Creative Music Lab, Steve Weiss Mallet Festival, and Montreal Contemporary Music Lab.

Matt Engle grew up in the Philadelphia area and has been an active member of the creative and improvised music scene for 20 years. He has contributed to many varying musical situations and has previously performed with Dan Blacksberg, Bobby Zankel, Sonic Liberation Front, Bird Fly Yellow, Shot By Shot, The Scriptors, Yapp, Jarrett Gilgore, Split Red, Dave Liebman, Tim Young, Marshall Allen, Anomalous Warmth, Watson, Roberto Pace, Sam Newsome, Rick Iannacone, Jaimie Branch, Elliot Levin, Anthony Pirog, Raymond King, David Middleton, Vince Johnson, Veronica MJ, Muhammad Ali, Oliver Lake, Seth Meicht, Tim Berne, Jack Wright, Thurman Barker, Jay Lunar, and Brandon Seabrook among many others.

Tessa Ellis has been fascinated by the sound of the trumpet since she was a four-year-old hearing the instrument for the first time. Her work as a Philadelphia-based freelance trumpeter and teaching artist is inspired by her lifelong drive to create new and nuanced sounds. Tessa is a founding member of the Arcana New Music Ensemble and the Opus 5 Brass Quintet and has enjoyed genre-bending performances with Hanson, Amos Lee, Square Peg Round Hole, and Caracara. She studied with David Bilger at the Curtis Institute of Music and earned a Bachelor’s of Music (2017) and a Community Artist Fellowship Diploma (2018). As an orchestral musician, she has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Lancaster Symphony, Orchestra 2001, and Symphony in C. Tessa was a finalist in the 2016 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition and she has won first place in two divisions of the National Trumpet Competition.

Julius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist, performer and composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic/ linguistic/ somatic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz, Metal, AfroCuban, Experimental Noise, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, he moved to the States in 1990 and began studying with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola, Elaine Hoffman-Watts, and as an undergraduate at Bard College, with AACM’s Thurman Barker, Richard Teitelbaum, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums, circuit modified Casio keyboards, Oud, Kamancheh (aka Rabab, Spike Fiddle), and various other instruments. In November 2021, Julius released the album “The Arabic Room” under the project name Mephisto Halabi, garnering international praise in music publications and websites including WIRE Magazine (Dec2021), PopMatters, Radio al-Harra, Foxy Digitalis, and many others.

Fire Museum Presents is excited to host a memorable evening at The Rotunda with three unique groundbreaking artists. Engaged in the world around them socially and ecologically, utilizing new sonic technologies, and incorporating their love and respect for many musical cultures, Thollem and Sunken Cages deliver a performance that could not have been made before now or by anybody else. They honor the radical innovators of the past by expressing these times and their relationship to it which is self evident in their duo album on Astral Spirits last year. Thollem will also be joined by Chicana visual artist ACVilla with projections to accompany his solo electric work in celebration of his new solo album Obstacle Illusion on Astral Spirits Records.

Thollem (Digital Multi-timbral Keyboard) has spent his life traversing borders and confluences, curiosity and collaboration being the driving force of his life and work. He is fortunate to have been exposed to many different musical approaches growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area and has spent much of his adult life touring throughout N. Sunken Cages (electronic drums, percussion, production)

Momin, who started out as an acoustic drummer and percussionist a couple of decades ago, has been working under the ‘Sunken Cages’ moniker since 2019, in order to showcase his unique electroacoustic hybrid approach which splits the difference between live performance and production. He plays drums, triggers textures and clips, and layers live-loops while manipulating them in real-time to blur the lines between composition and improvisation. While rooted in Indian folk and Black Music traditions, Momin is also influenced by the street sounds of underground dance music from Durban to Mumbai and beyond.

ACVilla

Since 2008, ACVilla has lived as a peripatetic photographer, videographer and visual artist. She focuses her camera on the nuances that define the character of the fleeting yet eternal present moment as well as the dynamics of the world at large. Bowerbird is pleased to present Liminal States, an ongoing series of late night, live streamed concerts intended to be listened to as you fall asleep. Aiming to center and calm, the musicians will seek to lead listeners to that magic space between awake and asleep. Tune in and bliss out. Harpist Elizabeth Steiner will perform from her home in Philadelphia.

Elizabeth Steiner enjoys a busy schedule as a freelance harpist in the Philadelphia area. An accomplished orchestral harpist, Elizabeth has most recently performed as principal harp with the Baltimore Symphony, the Philly Pops, Delaware Symphony, Orchestra 2001, and second harp with the Sarasota Orchestra, among others. Elizabeth currently performs in the all-female identifying, mostly BIPOC ensemble the Broadway Sinfonietta, which served as the orchestra for the musical Ratatousical, which raised over 2 million dollars for the Actors Fund and was watched by an audience of over 350,000. Further recent projects include an appearance in the designer Tia Adeola’s film ‘Le Noir Est Beau’ which premiered on Vogue.com in December 2020. Innovative and comfortable across genres, Ms. Steiner has performed with a wide variety of artists such as Moses Sumney, Leslie Odom Jr., and Josh Groban. She holds a Master’s of Music in Harp Performance from Temple University where she was awarded a scholarship to study with Elizabeth Hainen, and a Bachelor’s of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a scholarship student under Yolanda Kondonassis. Elizabeth was awarded an inaugural Sphinx Organization LEAD Fellowship (Leaders in Excellence, Arts, and Diversity) for 2019 – 2020 and is currently a Fitler Club Fellow for 2020 – 2021. A passionate advocate for equitable access to quality harp education, she serves as a Teaching Artist for the Lyra Society at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, a non-profit that provides weekly free harp lessons to 30 students in Philadelphia.
