Fire Museum pres. Sandcatchers & Unseen Rain

Sandcatchers is a Middle Eastern-Americana mash-up that grew from a weekly residency at Cheryl’s Global Soul restaurant in Brooklyn. The quartet—featuring experimental guitarist and composer Yoshie Fruchter (John Zorn’s Tzadik Records); Michael Bates, an accomplished jazz bassist with a punk background; Myk Freedman, a pioneer of modern lap-steel music; and percussionist Tim Keiper (Vieux Farka Toure, Cyro Baptista)—explores the unique combination of the oud, an instrument that goes back centuries to pre-Islamic Persia and Turkey, and the lap steel, a more recent invention with roots in the American South. The musicians bring their varying backgrounds, specialties and improvisational voices together to create a vibrant new sound. – Matthew Oshinsky/Paste

Unseen Rain is an acoustic ensemble comprised of strings, vibraphone and percussion. Recently founded by violinist June Bender, the group’s aesthetic draws from speech patterns, the poems of Rumi, and the music of John Luther Adams, Tin Hat Trio, and Paul Motion among others. Unseen Rain features Alban Bailly (Inzinzac, Oscuro Quintet, Yapp, Mazout), Matt Stein (Belleville Quartet, Illumina, Hoots and Hellmouth), Mike Szekely (Hawk Tubley & The Ozymandians, Reel, Dan Blacksberg Trio, The Scriptors, Several Wolves), Ashley Tini (Duomo) and June Bender (Belleville Quartet, Prometheus Chamber Orchestra).

  • 8:00 PMSusan Alcorn/Chris Corsano/Bill Nace, Erik Ruin's OCE & A/U; Fire Museum Presents
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM

    Susan Alcorn/Chris Corsano/Bill Nace, Erik Ruin's OCE & A/U

Susan Alcorn/Chris Corsano/Bill Nace trio: One of the world’s premiere musical innovators on her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Known among steel guitarists for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Alcorn soon expanded the vocabulary of her instrument by studying modern classical music, the deep listening of Pauline Oliveros, Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango, free jazz, and world music. Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and musical experience while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression.

Chris Corsano is a drummer who has been working at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990’s. He began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as “The Hated Music”, infuses modern free-jazz’s ecstatic collectivism with the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk.

A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to concentrate on his solo music, an always-spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussion instruments of his own making incorporated into his kit. In February 2006, Corsano released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, and Japan. He spent 2007 and ’08 as the drummer on Björk’s Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, C. Spencer Yeh, and Jandek.

Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, including a duo with Michael Flower, Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace), Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work, further expanded in its use of contact microphones and synthesizers. In 2017, he received the prestigious Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award.

Corsano’s dedication to collective improvisation led to collaborations with many kindred spirits and resulted in his appearance on over 140 records and 1000 live performances. In addition to the the musicians mentioned above, he’s worked with, among others: Paul Dunmall (released by the label: ESP-Disk), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), Okkyung Lee (Open Mouth), Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed), John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang), Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch), Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits), Jim O’Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar), Merzbow (Family Vineyard), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Heather Leigh (Volcanic Tongue), Ken Vandermark (Audiographic), Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand).

Bill Nace is an artist and musician based in Philadelphia PA. He has collaborated with an extraordinary range of musicians, including Michael Morley, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano, Jooklo Duo, Chris Cooper, John Truscinski, Thurston Moore, Jake Meginsky, Jessica Rylan, Paul Flaherty, Wally Shoup, and Kim Gordon, with whom he regularly plays as one half of the duo Body/Head. Their latest LP “The Switch” will be released released on Matador in July . He has been a featured musician in festivals such as ATP (curated by Jim Jarmusch and held in Monticello, NY), Colour Out of Space(Brighton, UK), Supersonic Festival (Birmingham, UK), International Festival Musique Actuelle (Victoriaville, QC), and Homegrown (Boston, MA). He has performed in a wide variety of venues, running the gamut from the Musee d’Art Contemporain (Strasbourg, France) to The Stone (NYC) to Bennington College (Vermont). Nace’s range has been described as “ veering from sculptural, almost Remko-Scha-esque chime to Loren Connors-style elegance in only a few short moves.” (Mimaroglu Music, 2010). Recordings can be found on Ecstatic Peace (Northampton, MA), Ultra Eczema (Belgium), Holidays (Italy), 8mm (Italy), Throne Heap (VA), HP Cycle (Toronto, ON), as well as on Nace’s own label Open Mouth

Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble: Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music, led by visual artist Erik Ruin, recently lauded by the New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble include a rotating cast of Philly’s finest musicians, who have collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to the Sun Ra Arkestra, Chris Forsyth to Bardo Pond.

Eric Arn/Margaret Unknown: Explosive free-guitar veterans Eric Arn (Primordial Undermind, Bird People) and Margaret Unknown ((In) The Abyssity of Grounds w/ Linda Sharrock) will be touring the US as a duo this fall. For 10 years, Eric Arn and Margaret Unknown have been exploring the outer reaches of improvised music with results as fascinating as they are audacious. Using any and all techniques, discarding conventional foundations, they eliminate boundaries between psychedelic explorations, freedom music, abstract noise, and contemporary composition. They are releasing their first duo LP ‘Paranza Corta’ on Feeding Tube Records in summer 2018.

  • 8:00 PMSecret Cinema pres. TOTALLY WIRED: THE FILMS OF BELL TELEPHONE
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM

The Secret Cinema presentsTOTALLY WIRED: THE FILMS OF BELL TELEPHONE at the Rotunda

On Thursday, September 13, the Secret Cinema will present an evening of short films from one of the major motion picture producers of the 20th century -- the phone company! It will screen at University City's Rotunda, as part of their monthly free film series. For 99 years, until its breakup in 1984, the Bell System (aka A.T. & T.) enjoyed an unprecedented monopoly of the telephone communications business in America. And one of the ways it consolidated its strength was by utilizing movies to their fullest potential as a shaper of attitudes: of its employees, its business customers and the general public.

TOTALLY WIRED: THE FILMS OF BELL TELEPHONE is a varied collection of short, non-theatrical films produced by the Bell System, covering all of these uses. As the largest corporation in the world, Bell had unlimited resources, producing corporate films more skillfully and more entertainingly than most companies could. They spared little expense, with frequent use of color, animation, and expert talent, on both sides of the camera. We will show an assortment of rare Bell sales films, in-house training films, commercials and public relations films. As they depict the various missions and agendas of one business throughout the years, the movies also provide a revealing look at mid-century America in general. Many of these reels were never meant to be shown to the general public. As with all Secret Cinema presentations, TOTALLY WIRED will be shown using real 16mm film (not video) projected onto a giant screen. There will be one complete show, starting at 8:00 pm. Admission is free.Just a few of the highlights of TOTALLY WIRED: THE FILMS OF BELL TELEPHONE will be:

TELEPHONE HIGHLIGHTS (1947) - Using the lively techniques of the classic theatrical newsreel (quick editing, enthusiastic narration, peppy background music), this action-packed one-reeler details post-war news and accomplishments of the New York Telephone Company. Shown are the top-to-bottom construction of a new (pre-electronic) phone exchange in midtown Manhattan, and the connecting of the one-millionth telephone in upstate New York. Producer Leslie Roush was a veteran director of short subjects for Paramount in earlier years.WHAT'S IN A NAME? (1950s) - This rare business office training film uses a dramatized story to explain the potentially snowballing impact of getting just one character of a customer's phone listing incorrect.DIAL "O" FOR OPERATOR (1965) - A peculiar and possibly frightening short, using dramatic scenes from the Sidney Poitier film THE SLENDER THREAD to demonstrate the advancements made in the technology of...tracing phone calls.INVISIBLE DIPLOMATS (1965) - This humorous look at business telephone etiquette, made in gorgeous Technicolor, tells its message through the perspective of two cheerful but harried PBX (private branch exchange, or in-house switchboard) operators. The familiar cast includes not only THE HONEYMOONERS' Audrey Meadows, but also ONE DAY AT A TIME's Bonnie Franklin and Harold Peary of radio's THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE (he was also a character actor in countless TV and voiceover credits). Directed by prolific Hollywood choreographer Leroy Prinz.OPERATOR (1969) - Director Nell Cox, with help from documentary pioneer Richard Leacock (working here for Maysles Films) uses the CINEMA VERITE techniques Leacock helped invent to show the challenging but rewarding work of a telephone operator, in an effort to recruit young women into the profession. With psychedelic music provided by the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble.PICTURE PHONE (1970) - This demonstration film shows off the enhanced business capabilities of an updated version of the Picture Phone, famously demonstrated at the 1964 New York World's Fair.  It was sadly to remain one of Bell Telephone's greatest failures. This Secret Cinema program was previously presented in 2007 at Moore College of Art, and in 2012 at New York's Anthology Film Archives.SECRET CINEMA WEBSITE: http://www.thesecretcinema.com

New Sound Brass mixes funk, R&B, gospel and rock to make a sound that’s a fresh and soulful twist on various styles of music. This multi-cultural unit draws influence and inspiration from its vast and diverse background to produce a sound that has been described as Philly Soul spoken through brass. New Sound is not so much new in terms of the sonic, but rather in how the sound is collected, treated and offered back to the audience. The intention is to build culture, community and musical phenomenon by the melding and interplay between band and the audience, a relationship between brass and the listener.

Opening the show will be Joy Ike, whose percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals have drawn comparisons to Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, and Fiona Apple. The daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Ike pays homage to her African upbringing through her music.

This is the 14th year for the 40th Street Summer Series, produced by The Rotunda, the University of Pennsylvania, and University City District.

Stop by at 6 pm for interactive activities with the University City Arts League, free scoops of ice cream from Ben & Jerry's, and delicious, healthy snacks from honeygrow.

    Admission is FREE.

  • 8:00 PMEvent Horizon pres. Madam Data, Audio Mace, Melting Transistors
  • 8:00 PM - 11:30 PM The Event Horizon SeriespresentsMadam Datasonic architecture for people and vacuum cleanersAudio Macedark ambient industrial multimedia experienceMelting Transistors improvised audio excursions

About the acts!Madam Data - Performing as Madam Data, Ada Adhiyatma explores machine interfaces and the potential for technology to birth mutable bodies that defy the strictures of liberal humanism. They fantasize that machine-mediated sound can offer ways of re-imagining the still-gendered, still-racialized, still differently-abled body in terms that are freeing, fundamentally strange, and ultimately healing. They also think about buildings a lot.Audio Mace - Hailing from Maryland, Audio Mace is Chris Wikman and Al Baldwin. Complex, instrumental arrangements, varied musical styles, and evocative soundscapes characterize their offerings, each piece with its own unique mood and style. Their performances are accompanied by multi-media visuals they create for each performance to provide an immersive and often intense experience. Formed to provide a vehicle for exploring music with a more “industrial” and “experimental” style, Audio Mace combines electronic instrumentation with exotic instruments (including several unique and “home-made” ones), sound textures, rhythmic elements, and percussion as it seeks to explore new themes and sonic textures and to create unique and evocative musical journeys.

As you listen to their music, you will note the variety of moods, expressions, and styles.  Each piece is unique and defies being placed in a stylistic box, having been individually crafted to express its inspiration, mood, or journey.  You will hear a mixture of elements: here some ambient … there some industrial … here some space-rock … and there some electronic. If you need a “label”, consider “avant-garde music”… music which is ahead of its time, containing unique or original elements, or unexplored fusions of different genres.  The Melting Transistor - Formed in 2012, The Melting Transistor is a trio from the industrial swampland of central New Jersey/eastern Pennsylvania that creates completely improvised electronic music. The group consists of Juan Garces (synthesizers, electronics), Floyd Bledsoe (synthesizers, electronics) and Karl Fury (stringed instruments, electronics). The music is primarily generated with no prior planning but often sounds intricately composed. Middle eastern melodies mixing alongside of deep space electronics, bluesy slide and soaring rock guitar, exotic grooves, and avant-garde elements all add up to The Melting Transistor.

Admission is FREEAND NEXT UP....October 27th Laura Woodswalker, The Quantum Erasure Experiment and OmbientLaura Woodswalker - Laurahas played bluegrass banjo, bass, guitar, mandola and melodica. Her introduction to digital recording was her 'Insect Summer of Love' Nature sounds project featuring the songs of crickets, cicadas, birds and frogs. Her musical influences include psychedelic 60s bands, the Berlin school, Robert Rich, ambient space music, melodic techno, deep trance, prog-rock, Irish, bluegrass, Balkan and Middle Eastern music. For the past 10 years she has been performing at the Electro-Music festival in Huguenot and Homer NY. Her ambient compositions are rhythmic, melodic, sometimes a bit mystical. "The riffs create themselves and I save them as clips, then jam around them. Music is the truest form of prayer and magic."

The Quantum Erasure Experiment aka Dan Hamilton, grew up in a house where his mother and sister played the piano day and night. Without any formal training he began to emulate what he heard. It was due to his lack of musical training that he was forced to learn how to play by ear. In doing so, his ability to pick apart the sounds that he heard grew over time. In the early 2000’s he was able to combine his love and knowledge of electronics with his love of sound. With the resurgence of modular synthesizers, he was able to acquire the hardware tools he needed to be able to carve up and manipulate different sounds at will. It was at this point that The Quantum Eraser Experiment was born. Playing under this persona, he eliminated all predefined genre rules and instead plays completely improvisational and reacts to what he is hearing instead of playing something predetermined. This makes every performance unique and completely unexpected to him and the audience. The outcome of playing this way could turn out great or terrible, but it’s always interesting. He has played live shows in NYC and is a regular performer on WLFR 91.7 FM Stockton University and WPRB 103.3 FM Princeton, NJ.

Ombient is the moniker under which Mike Hunter performs his ambient/drone/experimental music. His ambient/drone/electronic music, being of a live and improvisational nature, is representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer. Ombient users various vintage and contemporary analog synthesizers, a large Synthesizers.com Modular, a expansive eurorack modular, and occasionally computers running Ableton Live with various synth plug-in's. Most of the older music of Ombient features 6 string guitar and/or 12 string Warr Touch Guitar which is processed and layered using digital looping equipment. Mike is also the host of the radio show Music With Space on WPRB 103.3 FM out of Princeton, NJ
