The October Revolution of Jazz & Contemporary Musicby Alan Roth, 2013, 75 min, digital video

Please join us for the Philadelphia premiere of The Breath Courses Through Us (2013), a documentary film about the early 1960s avant-garde jazz group, the New York Art Quartet. In 1964, many musicians within the New York jazz community were searching for a new direction. The cross currents brought together Afro-Danish saxophonist John Tchicai with trombonist Roswell Rudd and Latin jazz drummer Milford Graves to form the New York Art Quartet, along with many different bass players, including Reggie Workman, fresh from his work with John Coltrane and Art Blakey. They were sometimes joined by poet Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones, who would read his poetry, including the essential piece BLACK DADA NIHILISMUS. Although the group was in existence for barely one year, their ideas and collective collaborations made a long-lasting impact in improvisational music. Some 35 years later, they reunited for a concert in New York City, then traveled to Paris and Lisbon for two additional performances. The Breath Courses Through Us revolves around this reunion, includes excerpts from their completely improvised concert, and takes a personal, inside look at these artists in the present tense, with reflections on their formation and explanations of their musical ideas. Saxophonist Steve Lacy and jazz historian Ben Young from WKCR fill in some of the historical details. This lyrically-edited film is filled with their music, personalities, and ideas.

Bowerbird presentsTashi Wada Group(featuring Julia Holter and Corey Fogel)+ Jeff Zeigler and Dash LewisLos Angeles-based composer Tashi Wada presents his new group featuring Julia Holter and percussionist Corey Fogel performing music from Wada's new album “Nue” out this fall on Brooklyn-based label RVNG Intl. Opening the evening will be a new synthesizer duo project from Jeff Zeigler (Philadelphia) and Dash Lewis (Richmond).

In Japanese, ‘nue’ is a mythological chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and the tail of a snake. In French, ‘nue’ means naked—stripped of complexity, bare and exposed, but also raw and essential. This duality underlies “Nue.” Released as part of RVNG Intl’s FRKWYS series of intergenerational projects, this collaboration ranges from minimalist bagpipes to otherworldly vocals, creating, in Wada’s words, “a vision, an endless night of dreams, and a personal history of sorts, full of joys and demons.” From the doubling of tones—and the world of harmonic nuances such an action produces—to the rich interplay between individual musicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through shared performance, Wada’s compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow. The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity and purity of the music itself.

Ken ZuckermanKen Zuckerman, internationally acclaimed as one of the finest sarod virtuosos performing today, has also been called “…one of the world’s most eclectic masters of improvisation.” He completed thirty-seven years of training under the rigorous discipline of India’s legendary sarod master Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, up to the maestro’s passing in June 2009. He also performed with Maestro Khan in numerous concerts in Europe, India, and the United States.

In addition to his extensive performance schedule, Ken Zuckerman has directed the Ali Akbar College of Music in Switzerland for 33 years and is also a professor at the Music Conservatory of Basel where he conducts courses in both North Indian classical music and the music of the Middle Ages.

While finishing his doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University, Ratnakar kept up his tabla training under eminent tabla player Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, an exponent of Lucknow Gharana here in USA. Ratnakar is equally adept at accompanying Hindustani classical and semi-classical musicians. He has accompanied artists such as classical vocalists Dr. Prabha Atre, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Laxmi Shankar, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ramesh Narayan, Meeta Pandit and instrumentalists such as Pt. Satish Vyas, K. Shridhar, Kala Ramnath, Pt. Raghunath Seth, Milind Raikar and Anant Kunte.

The Rotunda and Fire Museum Present:Jeffrey WerbockA presentation & performance of Azerbaijani mughamJeffrey Werbock will present a program of instrumental solo improvisations based on traditional Azerbaijani mugham, played on oud – fretless wood face short neck lute; tar – fretted skin face long neck lute; and kamancha – skin face spike fiddle.Azerbaijani mugham is monophonic modal music, highly microtonal, meter free, densely ornamented, composed of complex melodic lines that are somewhat improvised according to the eastern tradition of theme and variation, and convey a mix of sorrow and joy, exhaltation and lament, and an overall sense of both antiquity and otherworldiness.Mr. Werbock has been giving presentations for well over three decades and has performed often at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Asia Society, World Music Institute, and presents lecture demonstrations at colleges and universities all over the English speaking world. Taja Lindley's The Bag Lady ManifestaIn a world that treats Black life as if it’s disposable, The Bag Lady is an urgent reckoning and revelation. She is the accumulation of discarded lives and abandoned histories reeking havoc on the amnesia, the forgetting, the erasure and the silencing. Remembering is the responsibility of the living. Are you doing your work? Because an unacknowledged history produces ghosts.

Performed by Taja Lindley, The Bag Lady Manifesta features an immersive installation of memory followed by a participatory performance ritual where audiences are invited to (re)consider what to let go of, and what to remember – individually and collectively. Through dynamic movement, burlesque, text, soundscapes, ritual and projection Lindley adorns and activates her Black, queer, female body with trash bags to traverse the dumping grounds and shadow side(s) of herself, the audience and the United States.

This work is inspired by previous iterations of Lindley’s Bag Lady work, including This Ain’t A Eulogy: A Ritual for Re-Membering, and was presented as the culmination of Lindley’s residency at Dixon Place.

The performance will be followed by a talkback with Taja, moderated by international author and performance poet TS Hawkins.

HOWARD STELZER: CROSSING PARALLELDavid Kessler's Lopapeysa

Boston based composer/performer Howard Stelzer performs “Crossing Parallel”, a live score to Joe Taylor’s poetic film footage of the American southwest. Accompanying this work will be a screening of Philadelphia based film maker David Scott Kessler‘s Icelandic short film Lopapeysa (with a recorded score by Mary Lattimore and Benjamin Warfield).

ABOUT CROSSING PARALLEL “Crossing Parallel”, an extended film by Howard Stelzer & Joe Taylor. It grew out of Taylor’s forthcoming film “The Crossing”, a narrative Western movie shot mostly in Death Valley, Nevada, for which Stelzer composed the soundtrack. This extended film project is intended as a continuation of, or a reimagining of, their collaboration. As the title suggests, it exists in parallel to “The Crossing”, as another view of the work from a non-narrative and sound-focused perspective. For this extended film, Taylor presents deep and evocative Nevada landscapes, sunrises, and natural imagery shot either for use in “The Crossing” or as supplemental footage.  Stelzer uses the cassette tapes he made as source material for the soundtrack in a live tape-collage that spotlights the mood, pacing, and atmosphere of the imagery. The result is a 40-minute work for projected film and live sound performed with between 10 and 20 cassette decks.  Stelzer notes, “As a lifelong city dweller, I was drawn to the landscape images of Taylor’s short films… images of the American southwest, Death Valley, ghost towns in Nevada, rural treelines, mountains, sunsets… they were so different from anything I’ve known. While writing the soundtrack for “The Crossing”, I wanted to see more of Taylor’s images without any actors or plot guiding them. “Crossing Parallel”, then, was conceived as an outgrowth of the feature film… only natural images, and sound distilled mainly from soundtrack elements. The idea is something like armchair tourism; an immersion in glorious American landscapes, desolate and lush.

Howard Stelzer is a composer of electro-acoustic music. Almost all of his sounds are generated by, processed by, recorded onto and played back out of cassette tapes and consumer-grade tape players.  Stelzer operated the Intransitive Recordings label from 1997 until 2012. When he is not composing, Stelzer is a middle school math teacher in Lowell, MA, where he lives with his family in a big room behind a disused power plant. 

ABOUT LOPAPEYSA Lopapeysa, a short film by David Scott Kessler merges travel log with surreal fantasy. Primarily shot during a one month artist residency in Iceland in the winter of 2013, the film explores the mindset of a traveler guided by a longing to fully experience an unknown place – led by his own preconceived ideas and the landscape’s ubiquitous influence. The film seeks to preserve the wonder of first exploration, a naive beauty difficult to recapture and often lost to familiarity.  Lopapeysa and its companion piece Lopi were made for the 2014 exhibition Due North curated by Marianne Bernstein.  The film has an original score by Mary Lattimore and Benjamin Warfield.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - 9/30/2018 - Touch of Classics! is bringing two musical masterpieces Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel for two performances at The Rotunda on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania. Touch of Classics! James R. Longacre and Dorothy Cardella bring these fully staged and costumed shows for the enjoyment of young and old during the Halloween Season. 

Everyone knows the story of Little Red’s adventure in the dark woods to visit Gramma’s house and their escape from the ravenous wolf. By luck and trickery their lives are spared by the trusty woodsman’s axe. Also, Hansel & Gretel’s tale after their Mother sends them into the dark and eerie woods in search of strawberries where they both get lost in the deepest part until they discover the magical gingerbread house of the evil Witch, who quickly captures them and prepares to make them the latest batch of gingerbread children to add to her collection. Gretel outsmarts the Witch freeing all the other children from her magical spell and ending her reign of terror. 

The productions feature a talented cast of performers within the warm atmosphere of The Rotunda at 4014 Walnut Street. In the cast of Little Red are Rachel Daly as Little Red, Sharon Derstine as The Grandmother, and Edward Bogusz as The Wolf/ Woodsman. Hansel & Gretel features Mary Punshon as Hansel, Dorothy Cardella as Gretel, Sharon Derstine as The Mother, Stephen Raytek as The Father, Rachel Daly as The Dew Fairy & The Sandman, and James R. Longacre as The Witch. Directing the operas is Michael Tunney and Music Director is Joseph Krupa. Both shows are slated for two Matinee Performances Saturday and Sunday, the 20TH & 21ST of October, at 2:30PM.

Julian Priester Born in Chicago on June 29 1935, Julian Priester spent his teenage years performing in Chicago's vibrant RnB scene with artists such as Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington and Bo Diddley. In the mid-50s he joined Sun Ra's groundbreaking avant-garde big band. In 1958 Julian split for New York where he joined Max Roach while Roach was involved in recordings such as Freedom Now Suite, an album that combines jazz improvisation with concert hall composition.

In 1960 Priester made his first recordings as a band leader and then joined the Blue Note label as an in-demand session trombonist. While with Blue Note he recorded with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, John Coltrane and others. In the early 70s Julian joined Herbie Hancock's legendary Sextet which combined spacey avant jazz with electronics and psychedic studio production. Splitting from Hancock in 73, Priester continued this style of progressive jazz fusion with two recordings of his own on the ECM label.

In the 80s and 90s Priester worked with Sun Ra's band again, as well as Dave Holland, Charlie Haden and others. In the late 90s he began to record under his own name again, and continues to do so to this day.withDAVID HANEY Haney studied composition for six years with Czech composer, Tomas Svoboda and presented works with the Society of Oregon Composers, Haney has worked with such featured artists as Andrew Cyrille, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Bud Shank, Bernard Purdie, Buell Neidlinger, Julian Priester, Han Bennink, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Weirbos, Perry Robinson, and Johannes Bauer. Haney has recorded 14 albums for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records . David has also collaborated on 14 albums on other labels worldwide. He has received grants and commissions for his creative work from the U.S. State Department; Alberta Film Works; and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Haney was awarded a travel grant from the U.S. State Department to present the music of composer Herbie Nichols in concerts throughout Argentina and Chile. Haney's piano/trombone work Ota Benga of the Batwa was included in the critics pick for best Jazz Album of 2007 (Coda Magazine). “Conspiracy a go go" and "Clandestine" were both selected Top Ten Jazz Albums of 2009 (Cadence Magazine). David’s current release “Solo” received top ten honors in 2014 (Cadence Magazine). The Penguin Guide to Jazz has a half page entry on several David Haney albums.

Laura Woodswalker, The Quantum Erasure Experiment and Ombient

Laura Woodswalker - Laurahas played bluegrass banjo, bass, guitar, mandola and melodica. Her introduction to digital recording was her 'Insect Summer of Love' Nature sounds project featuring the songs of crickets, cicadas, birds and frogs. Her musical influences include psychedelic 60s bands, the Berlin school, Robert Rich, ambient space music, melodic techno, deep trance, prog-rock, Irish, bluegrass, Balkan and Middle Eastern music. For the past 10 years she has been performing at the Electro-Music festival in Huguenot and Homer NY. Her ambient compositions are rhythmic, melodic, sometimes a bit mystical. "The riffs create themselves and I save them as clips, then jam around them. Music is the truest form of prayer and magic."

The Quantum Erasure Experiment aka Dan Hamilton, grew up in a house where his mother and sister played the piano day and night. Without any formal training he began to emulate what he heard. It was due to his lack of musical training that he was forced to learn how to play by ear. In doing so, his ability to pick apart the sounds that he heard grew over time. In the early 2000’s he was able to combine his love and knowledge of electronics with his love of sound. With the resurgence of modular synthesizers, he was able to acquire the hardware tools he needed to be able to carve up and manipulate different sounds at will. It was at this point that The Quantum Eraser Experiment was born. Playing under this persona, he eliminated all predefined genre rules and instead plays completely improvisational and reacts to what he is hearing instead of playing something predetermined. This makes every performance unique and completely unexpected to him and the audience. The outcome of playing this way could turn out great or terrible, but it’s always interesting. He has played live shows in NYC and is a regular performer on WLFR 91.7 FM Stockton University and WPRB 103.3 FM Princeton, NJ.

Ombient is the moniker under which Mike Hunter performs his ambient/drone/experimental music. His ambient/drone/electronic music, being of a live and improvisational nature, is representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer. Ombient users various vintage and contemporary analog synthesizers, a large Synthesizers.com Modular, a expansive eurorack modular, and occasionally computers running Ableton Live with various synth plug-in's. Most of the older music of Ombient features 6 string guitar and/or 12 string Warr Touch Guitar which is processed and layered using digital looping equipment. Mike is also the host of the radio show Music With Space on WPRB 103.3 FM out of Princeton, NJ
