ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage. 

What does throat singing sound like? "Imagine a human bagpipe-a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally-by the same person, at the same time." -Newsweek (March 17, 2006) Where is Tuva? Tuva (sometimes spelled Tyva) sits at the southern edge of Siberia, with Mongolia to its south. Over the centuries, Tuva has been part of Chinese and Mongolian empires, and shares many cultural ties with Mongolia. In 1944 it became part of the USSR, and until the late physicist Richard Feynman drew attention to it, was largely unknown to westerners. Tuva is now a member of the Russian Federation.

(Theatre of the Oppressed) T.O. Philly kicks off its fall 2017 program with a pair of free sessions open to anyone with or without experience working in Theatre of the Oppressed. Each workshop will incorporate T.O.'s embodied ice-breakers and theatrical games that are used by actors, activists, educators, organizers, and anyone else who works with groups. These games hone skills that we then combine to do the deeper work of Theatre of the Oppressed in rehearsing strategies for a new society.

In the October 10 session, Hariprasad Kowtha leads a workshop about contradictions and how they relate to community organizing. On October 24,  participants with work with Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews to make momentary monuments as a gateway for discussing what public monuments represent today, and what they could become tomorrow.

The Rotunda sponsors a FREE public performance of childhood sexual abuse survivor Michael Broussard's interactive show about survival and healing. Ask A Sex Abuse Survivor utilizes a unique mix of storytelling, audience interaction and improvisation to spark a real-time conversation about the effects of sexual abuse on children and adult survivors. Broussard himself is a walking, talking case study, able to give candid answers to questions about the survivor experience from all stages of his life.

The one-hour performance includes feedback breaks throughout, during which audience members are encouraged to ask questions, make comments, or participate in any way they see fit.

Settled Arrows is the music project of Andrew Mars. The group features an evolving cast of players from the rock, classical and avant-garde worlds. The debut album: "Public Privacy" was called a "beautiful time capsule of modern life and love" by WXPN. Settled Arrows' sophomore album: "INNOCENCE (Or, The Fall of The Fool)" will be released in November. The album (a scifi/horror/fantasy operetta) raises questions about power, idealism and the nature of collective responsibility. 

Sylvia Platypus: If Edith Piaf partied with the Yardbirds on a windswept moor, the result might sound something like Sylvia Platypus. Sylvia Platypus is Philadelphia's (and possibly the world's) only psycho-celtic glam-blues band. Take the distinctive vocals and unusual poetic sensibility of Janet Bressler, add the soul-searing lead guitar work of Bill Barone (formerly of the 1970's era German progressive rock band Wallenstein), the magic of Phillip McMillan's violin, the solid rhythmic foundation of Ruchama Bilenky (bass) and Quirky Tom Theurer (drums) and throw in some wailing highland and uilleann piping from Charlie Rutan ("the Eddie Van Halen of bagpipes"*) and you have an original sonic signature that rattles the cage of "genre".

Jessica Graae blends her folk-rock style and classical training to create haunting, soulful songs. Her “evocative, lush, and exquisite” vocals are accompanied by “elegant and impressive guitar playing”. She received WSTW’s 10th Annual Hometown Heroes Homey Award for “Best Female Solo Artist”. Jessica celebrated the release of her second album “Sea Dream” with a show at World Café Live in Philadelphia. She has performed live on Gene Shay’s Folk Show (WXPN), Graffiti Radio, WCHE’s SoundStage and WSTW’s Hometown Heroes. She has played the Dewey Beach, Bordentown, Launch, Elm City and Ladybug Festivals and has opened for Ed Kowalczyk and Melissa Ferrick. Nominated for ten WSTW Hometown Hero Homey Awards, Jessica is a 2013 Philadelphia Folk Factory contest winner and a finalist in the 2012 and 2014 Delmarva Folk Hero contests. Most recently, she was featured at the 2017 Philadelphia Folk Festival.

MY LIFE IN 19inches is Craig Liggeons' hit One-Man show about one man's love of Television. Spanning 40 years in the life of a TV addict, the show begins on a Saturday morning in 1973 and travels through the 80's, 90's, and right up to today. The entire performance takes place in a childs bedroom and will take you back to a time when the only day you could watch your favorite cartoons was on Saturday morning. It will also take you back to a time when the N-word was commonly used on network sitcoms with no disclaimers beforehand. In the days before cable, relive the agony of trying to watch the 1980 World Series on a black & white TV while adjusting the antenna to get a clear picture. Do you remember what show you were watching in 1994 when it was interrupted by the OJ Simpson white bronco chase? Once upon a time Craig thought he had to quit his job in order to have his own TV show, but thanks to the popularity of Reality TV, a person can keep their job (Parking meter attendant, Pawn shop owner, etc.) and STILL have their own TV show! There will also be a musical tribute to MTV featuring music videos back when MTV played music videos. This show is not only about how much TV has changed, but how we've changed the way we look at TV, and more importantly, how TV has changed the way we look at each other.

Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho: film screening and performances by Andy McLeod, Eva and Jesse Sheppard

ABOUT THE EVENTBowerbird is pleased to present a screening of the 2015 biopic "Voice of an Eagle" about enigmatic guitarist Robbie Basho. The evening will be opened by performances by Andy McLead, and father-daughter duo Eva and Jesse Sheppard performing Basho tunes. 

ABOUT THE FILM (See the trailer HERE)Before his bizarre death at the hands of a chiropractor, Robbie Basho was sure that his compositions would not outlast him. Orphaned during infancy, diagnosed with synaesthesia (a union of the senses that caused him to interpret sound as color) and claiming to be the reincarnation of a 17th century poet - the Baltimore-born guitarist and singer's musical output was equally as outlandish as his persona.

In his brief and troubled life he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and '70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime.

Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a journey into the heart of an artist's lifelong struggle: designed to illuminate and satiate existing fans while serving as a perfect starting point for the uninitiated.

Featuring interviews with Basho's former students, contemporaries and few close friends (including Pete Townshend, William Ackerman, Henry Kaiser and Country Joe McDonald), the documentary integrates new information and anecdotes on Basho with previously uncovered archive material and photography of the natural phenomena and landscapes that informed his work.

With the resurgence of interest in Basho growing and a more widespread revival a tangible possibility, it is surely an auspicious time for his unique music and life story to be evoked through documentary.

ABOUT THE ARTISTSRobbie Basho (1940 - 1986) was a Berkeley-based composer, guitarist, and vocalist and one of the foremost proponents of steel string acoustic guitar as a solo concert instrument. Along with John Fahey and Leo Kottke, Basho was part of the triumvirate of pioneering guitarists on the Berkeley-based Takoma label in the 1960s. Basho went on to record for Windham Hill, and was an important influence on the label's founder, guitarist William Ackerman. His innovative guitar compositions incorporated American, European, and Eastern and influences, and he is credited for developing the improvisational "American raga" style.

Andy McLeod plays old-time music, American Primitive/fingerstyle guitar, ragtime, and drone/experimental music in Philadelphia, PA. He seeks to combine original compositions with new arrangements of pre-war music, raga, and country blues. Often joined by fiddler/guitar player Chris Dalnodar and fiddler/guitar player Sasha Hsuczyk. 

Eva Sheppard is currently a senior in high school. She performs her solo material under the name Nena. Her father, Jesse, is half of the psych/folk guitar duo Elkhorn. Eva and Jesse are featured on the album Basket Full of Dragons: A Tribute to Robbie Basho Vol II on Obsolete Recordings. They live in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

The return of themed slams!

PYPM returns with our monthly open mic and youth poetry slam. We are back at our regular slam home, The Rotunda!

Last year we premiered our themed slams to create a new challenge for the poets. We’re bringing back the themes for the regular season. For the first round of our October slam, the slammers must perform a poem about growth. Where they take the poems is up to their imagination!

Every third Saturday of the month, PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their amazing works of poetry!

BURTON GREENE/ ELLIOTT LEVIN/ SCOTT VERRASTRO Trio

BURTON GREENE: Greene rose to popularity during the 1960s on New York's free jazz scene, gigging with well-known musicians which included  Alan Silva and Marion Brown, among a host of others. With Alan Silva he formed the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble in 1963.[1] He joined Bill Dixon's and Cecil Taylor's Jazz Composers Guild in 1964, and also played with a number of other artists, including Rashied Ali, Albert Ayler, Gato Barbieri, Byard Lancaster, Sam Rivers, Patty Waters, and others. During this time, he recorded two albums under his own name for ESP-Disk.

He moved to Europe in 1969, first to Paris. Since then he has been living in Amsterdam and played with such Dutch musicians as Maarten Altena and Willem Breuker. During the late 1980s he began exploring the Klezmer tradition in his groups Klezmokum (along with Perry Robinson), Klez-thetics, and a more recent group called Klez-Edge with vocalist Marek Balata. Klez-Edge has a recent recording Ancestors, Mindreles, NaGila Monsters(2008) out on John Zorn's Tzadik label. A duet with Perry Robinson, also on the Tzadik label, Two Voices in the Desert was released in January 2009.

Since the mid-1990s Greene has often performed and recorded in New York and along the East Coast. Greene's recent performance and recorded groups based in New York include a duet with bassist Mark Dresser; a quartet with trumpeter Roy Campbell, Lou Grassi and Adam Lane; a trio with Ed and George Schuller on bass and drums (recorded on the CIMP label); and a quintet with the Schuller brothers, Russ Nolan on saxes and flute and Paul Smoker on trumpet. His autobiography written over 20 years, Memoirs of a Musical Pesty-Mystic, was published in 2001 (Cadence Jazz Books).

ELLIOTT LEVIN is a Philadelphia born and based poet and musician. He studied musical and literary composition at the University of Oregon. He has done further studies with Michael Guerra of the Phila. Orchestra; Cecil Taylor, pianist, composer, poet; Claire Polin, flutist composer; and Odean Pope, saxophonist, composer. Elliott has performed throughout the world with such groups as the Cecil Taylor Ensemble, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, New Ghost, Interplay, Talking Free Be-Bop, Odean Pope's Saxophone Choir, Don Preston's Akashic Ensemble, Cee-Knowledge & The Cosmic Funk Orchestra, Alan Silva's Sound Vision Orchestra. He has collaborated in performance with many poets including Miguel Algarin, Bob Holman, Gloria Tropp, Reg. E. Gaines, John Sinclair, Butch Morris' CHORUS OF POETS, Wil Perkins, Frank Messina and David Amram. His original music and poetry can be found on the recordings: OLDUVAI MUSIC ("Or-Om-You'll-Us" 1978), and ILTAR ("Ewe-Doh-Noh-What-Fo'-Kiss" 1979), on TIWA Records. He was the associate producer, composer, and performer for the compilations: POETRY IN PHILADELPHIA (1989), and MUSIC FROM PHILADELPHIA (1990). As producer, composer, performer, in 1990 and 1992, he created two internationally broadcast features for New American Radio.

Event Horizon Series presentsOctober 27th - Bonnie Kane, Wormhole Superette, Urban Shaman Attack

Integrating saxophone, flute, feedback and electronics, electro acoustic pioneer and dedicated improvisor, Bonnie Kane, terms her work as avant-core: an extreme energy mix of pyschedelic rock, hard core, and avant garde jazz. She was influenced by an unusually early exposure to Sun Ra, studies with Sonny Simmons, Paul McCandless, Glenn Moore, Ralph Towner (Oregon), and Jon Raskin (Rova Saxophone Quartet). A stint in the original Club Foot Orchestra, whose members then included Snakefinger (The Residents) and Eric Drew Feldman (Capt Beefheart), introduced her to electronic processing for horns, and brief study at Mills College under Anthony Braxton solidified her direction. Her bands have been known for "scalp shearing shows", "feats of bravery", and for music that is "...the algebra of heart, brain, and soul." A conductor of energy, her music is not for the timid.

Wormhole Superette is an improvisational experimental trio, consisted of Tracy Lisk, Irman Peck, and Travis Woodson. Tracy Lisk, MFA, exhibiting visual artist, curator (Inside the Moment: Int’l Short Film Festival in Philadelphia, Highwire Gallery). Former artist-in-residence at CESTA, Tábor, Czech Republic where she collaborated with Canadian videographer Dominic Gagnon. Former percussionist with the improvisational outfit: Agnes Warhead, has studied Brazilian percussion in Salvador and Rio, an active member of several percussion ensembles. I (Domino) Peck is a self taught writer, electric bassist, and is a founding member of; The post/art/punk band Los Dominos, Brian Kelly's literary rock band The Suns,  and Mike Landau's experimental noise collective, the Granular Cats. “My aim is to communicate a spiritual message through a common and accessible, popular idiom.” Travis Woodson is a composer, arranger, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist who has collaborated with various Philadelphia musicians and dancers. He has performed with in Make a Rising, Sonic Liberation Front, Electric Simcha, Split Red, Adult Content, Kohoutek, his own group Live Like a King, and/or Pyramid Minds. During the summer of 2012, he premiered a series of compositions and arrangements for three guitars, as a part of the Archer Spade Performance Series, and has performed at the Improvisational Music event:  the Nowhere Festival in 2015.

Urban Shaman Attack, or USA, is a quartet from Wilmington, DE. The band is Carl Bailey on clarinet, Robert McClelland on guitar, Dwayne Todd on Keyboard and kaossilator, and Richard Todd on drum kit and percussion. Playing unscripted, improvisational music , the music is best described as psychedelic jazz. USA draws influences from many artists past and present, including Sun Ra Arkestra, electric Miles Davis, Acid Mother Temple, and MMW. The tenth album "How to Build a Spacekraft", from Urban Shaman Attack, has been in the top 50 of iTunes new jazz releases worldwide for over nine months, reaching #14 in August. Rachel Hadas, a Board of Governors Professor of English at Rutgers University-Newark, is the author of over twenty volumes of poetry, translation, memoir, and criticism, including The Golden Road and Strange Relation. 

Keith O’Shaughnessy’s first book, Incommunicado, won the inaugural Grolier Discovery Award in 2011. His second, Last Call for Ganymede, was published by Ilora Press in 2014. His third and fourth, Petrushka and Snegurochka, are forthcoming in 2018 from the same.
