    On Tuesday nights this fall we bring back our popular series on race and interrupting racism.  Over the course of five weeks we'll excavate this topic through exercises, discussions, and techniques from the Theatre of the Oppressed, and equip participants with things to read and do between sessions. Our aim is to unlearn systemic racism we’ve been taught throughout our lives, to heal from racial privilege and oppression, and to offer starting points for structural and personal change for ourselves, our communities, and our world.

    FREE Screenings Continuous From 8 PMon the Second THURSDAY of Every Month!Since 2004, Andrew’s Video Vault is a free, once-a-month screening series at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia programed by film director and educator Andrew Repasky McElhinney.  Andrew’s Video Vault programs original, obscure, neglected, marginalized and commercial unavailable video media. It connects the West Philly neighborhood to the University of Pennsylvania community and fosters a multicultural examination of motion pictures in a relaxed, educational setting.

    In the latest installment of composer-performer Michael Harren’s multi-media performance, The Animal Show, Harren blends humor with candor to convey the importance of keeping all animals safe from harm. Through stories, music, and video from his residency at Tamerlaine Farm Animal Sanctuary and activism on the road, “The Animal Show” is a thoughtful exploration of humans’ relationships with non-human animals.

    Bowerbird is excited to present Emma Resmini, an extraordinary young virtuoso performing a program of contemporary music for flute. The program includes "Flautina" from Stockhausen's opera "Montag aus Licht" and Dai Fujikura's "Poison Mushrooms", a threnody to the victims of the Hiroshima bombing. 

    Emma began playing at flute at the age of three and is now a senior at the Curtis Institute of Music. Beyond the classical canon, Emma is also an avid performer of new music. A review of her performance at the 2016 New Music Gathering raved, "Emma Resmini stunned the crowd." (I Care If You Listen) At the Curtis Institute of Music she was a featured soloist in the tribute concert to composer Kaija Saariaho, performing NoaNoa for flute and electronics, and as a member of the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble.As an advocate of emerging composers, she has performed the world premiere of over twenty new works. She is also in her third season with the Arcana New Music Ensemble.

    PYPM returns with our monthly open mic and youth poetry slam. We are back at our regular slam home, The Rotunda!

    Last year we premiered our themed slams to create a new challenge for the poets. We’re bringing back the themes for the regular season. For the first round of our October slam, the slammers must perform a poem about growth. Where they take the poems is up to their imagination!

    Every third Saturday of the month, PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their amazing works of poetry!

    Although targeted to animal rights activists, information discussed in this event will help activists of all types. Included will be speakers from the ACLU of Pennsylvania and Animal ACTivists of Philly.

    Topics of discussion include your rights in protest situations and beyond, what to do if you are assaulted, and role play of police interactions.

    Please join us for a vegan potluck just like the super fun ones we have hosted here in the past! 

    Children are welcome! 

    We can accommodate dozens of folks and really want to encourage you to bring guests as well as meet new people. 

    Please bring a small vegan dish of your choosing, a card or sheet of paper listing your ingredients, and a serving utensil. Vegan food uses no animal ingredients so please make sure your dish does not contain dairy milk/cream/yogurt/cheese (vegan versions of all of these can be found at stores or made at home!), whey, meat, eggs, honey, etc. 

    Just a couple of notes: The Rotunda doesn't have a kitchen, so please bring your dishes ready to serve. We won't be able to heat up anything, freeze anything, etc. We also can't guarantee enough outlets for crock pots and the like. In addition, The Rotunda will provide disposable or compostable plates, forks, knives, spoons, cups, and napkins but you're more than welcome to bring your own reusables!

    Philadelphia Theatre of the Oppressed has run the Unpacking Race curriculum for Widener University, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, the Philadelphia Theatre Company, Action Reconciliation Service for Peace, Circle of Hope, and at the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference, as well as several times as a public workshop in Philadelphia.

  • 9:00 PM - 1:00 AM (nearly every last Thursday)  9pm-1am Established in 1996, The Gathering is the longest/strongest-running truly Hip Hop event in Philly. The 
Gathering IS b-boys/b-girls, pop-lockers, emcees, graffiti writers, 
DJs, men, women, and children of all ages enjoying an organic, 
community-based celebration of The struggle, the Love, and the culture 
of Hip Hop. DJs spin Hiphop, breaks, and funk all night, and there are 
open cyphas, a tag wall, and a featured performance and graffiti panel 
each month. Admission is $3 before 10pm, $5 after 10pm.
