  • 8:00 PMCANCELED DUE TO HURRICANE COMPLICATIONS Atlas Sound w/ School of Seven Bells, SDC
  • 8:00 PM - 11:30 PM CANCELED DUE TO HURRICANE COMPLICATIONS Atlas Sound w/ School of Seven Bells, SDC Jazz & Grooves’ first show of the year, featuring extremely talented artists. Opening is Penn campus stalwarts SDC, followed by New York dream-pop outfit School of Seven Bells. And headlining is Atlas Sound, the solo project of Deerhunter frontman, the one-and-only, Bradford Cox. Atlas Sound is the solo experimental, psychedelic, rock, folk project of musician Bradford Cox, the lead singer of Deerhunter. Cox started using the moniker Atlas Sound at age ten while recording music using a cassette player with two tape decks. Atlas Sound has had three main album releases, the most recent of which, Parallax, has gained widely positive reviews including being placed at #18 on Pitchfork’s top 50 albums of 2011. He has recorded with Panda Bear (of Animal Collective), the Black Lips, and contributed to the soundtrack of the 2009 movie, “Where the Wild Things Are.” Cox’s style is ever changing but he never fails to intrigue and entertain. School of Seven Bells is an electronic pop duo from New York City. Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza are praised for their interesting songwriting style and mesmerizing live shows. With Curtis’ gentle guitar sounds over jagged beats; silky vocals hide behind grumpy, alien synthesizers, the show is bound to be a wonderful spectacle. Ghostly International raves that their “songs are effortlessly cohesive and insidiously catchy.” The band has received widespread recognition in the UK and has toured with such artists as Interpol, Blonde Redhead, and Bat for Lashes. Penn campus stalwarts, 6-piece rock band Slow Dance Chubby, will open the night. Hear some of their music HERE Tickets: $5 in advance for Penn students; $10 day of show for Penn students; (limited $15 tickets available to public). Click here for tickets.

  • 8:00 PMHurricane Sandy Relief Benefit w/ Sylvia Platypus + fire performers + face painting
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Contact: Gina Martino ginamartino@gmail.com 856-979-4153 Rotunda Rocks for Sandy Relief Night of Music and Marvels to Benefit Hurricane Victims For IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA) On Saturday November 10 "psycho-Celtic glam-blues band" Sylvia Platypus along with a contingent of clowns, jugglers, dancers,  face-painters, sword swallowers  and fire spinners will take over the Rotunda at 4014 Walnut Street for a combined concert and circus-themed extravaganza to aid those affected by Hurricane Sandy. "As Sandy hit the Caribbean, the suggestion for a hurricane relief concert was raised," says Janet Bressler, vocalist and principal songwriter for Sylvia Platypus. "Then, the devastation arrived so close to home, and the choice became obvious." Take vocal mannerisms reminiscent of Edith Piaf and John Lee Hooker and combine them with a stage presence that is equal parts James Brown and Judy Garland, and you have some idea of  Bressler's lead-singer style . Add the  soul-searing Waddy Wachtel-meets-Brian May guitar work of  Bill Barone (formerly of the '70's era German symphonic rock band, "Wallenstein") , the heart-stirring musical textures of  award-winning composer  and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Rutan on highland and uilleann pipes, tin whistles, English horn and Neopolitan zampogna, and the take-no-prisoners rhythm section of  Michael Southerton on rhythm guitar, Ruchama Bilenky on bass, and Rosalba Gallo on drums and you get a six-piece outfit (three men, three women)  that delivers a tough and tender genre-busting impact. Sylvia Platypus' visionary scope and fearless presentation are attracting increasing attention from the music industry. They recently signed a publishing deal for the film and TV placement of some of their compositions. The band has a something-for-everyone appeal that reaches across demographics. "I was inspired by the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, which I have never seen" says Bressler. "This seemed like the perfect opportunity to try out the Sylvia Platypus version while helping those hardest hit by the unprecedented 'superstorm'." Similar to last year, the show will serve as a showcase and networking opportunity for Penn musicians. Although admission will be free, donations will be collected at the door for the Vagina Monologues. The event has been ramped up in scale and scope substantially from last year. The show will be co-sponsored not only by the Vagina Monologues but also by Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity and the Undergraduate Media & Entertainment Club (as part of their Media and Entertainment Week on campus). Additionally, the event has been moved from its old home at St. Mary’s church on Locust Walk to The Rotunda at 4014 Walnut St. The larger venue will aim to accommodate this year’s greater expected turnout. Campus musical acts Marigolds, Rail 3, Slow Dance Chubby, and Sarah Lindstedt will each be given 25-minute sets. After the four sets, a panel of judges selected by UME will select a winner to play a 15-minute encore. This judging panel will include professionals inside the music industry as well as music figures from Penn’s campus. “We’re really excited about this year’s PMC Show”, said College senior and SPEC Concerts Director Dorian Mendoza on the collaborative nature of this year’s event. “It’s about fostering a more involved community of musicians and music fans on campus. There’s a lot of great talent here that flies under the radar for the most part, and we want to help expose more people to it. By collaborating with UME and Alpha Kappa Psi, we’re hoping not only to provide a showcase for some great musicians on campus, but help create networking and promotion opportunities for them”. • 8:00 PMBowerbird pres. Gate series feat. Ben Vida & Eli Keszler + Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler
  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM featured this month: Ben Vida & Eli Keszler + Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler "Utilizing modular synthesizer, computer, drum kit and motorized percussive objects Vida and Keszler play an ecstatic form of electro-acoustic music." Ben Vida is a Brooklyn based composer, improviser and sound artist. He produces compositions that use analog and digital synthesizing technologies and focus on aural phenomena and sound localization. Ben has released over twenty records on such labels as PAN, Thrill Jockey, Drag City, Amish, Bottrop-Boy, Hapna and Kranky. As both a solo artist and in collaboration he has presented his work in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, South Korea and Japan. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, and currently based in New York City, Eli Keszler began playing drums at eight, and composing at twelve. Before finding an interest in experimental music and improvisation, he played in rock and hardcore bands; his work retains an intense physicality and churning, often ferocious energy. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory, where he studied composition with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake. He has collaborated with Phill Niblock, Roscoe Mitchell, Tony Conrad, Joe McPhee, Loren Connors, Jandek, and many others, and has recorded more than a dozen CDs and LPs for ESP-DISK, REL, and PAN. Keszler’s installations employ piano wires of varying lengths; these are struck, scraped, and vibrated by microprocessor-controlled motorized arms, giving rise to harmonically complex tones that are percussive yet resonant. These installations are heard on their own and with accompanying ensemble scores. Said Keszler in a NPR All Songs Considered interview, “I like to work with raw material, simple sounds, primitive or very old sounds; sounds that won't get dated in any way.” In addition, the patterns formed by the overlapping piano wires allow Keszler to create visual components that relate directly to the music, without having to use projections or other electronic equipment. Admission is FREE

  • 7:00 PMThe Big Yiddish Dance Party + klezmer dance & music workshops w/ Steven Lee Weintraub, Dan Blacksberg, and Michael Winograd
  • 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Contact: Dan Blacksberg 215-317-5889                    For Immediate Release dan.blacksberg@gmail.com Trombonist Dan Blacksberg Brings “The Big Yiddish Dance Party” to West Philadelphia A Day-long celebration of klezmer music and dance! 2pm: dance workshop w/ Steven Lee Weintraub; $5-10 suggested 4pm: music master class w/ Dan Blacksber and Michael Winograd; $5-10 suggested 7pm: big Yiddish public dance party; FREE On November 18th at 7PM I will present “The Big Yiddish Dance Party” at the Rotunda in West Philadelphia. This party aims to bring klezmer music to Philadelphia the way it is meant to be experienced, with live music and dance leading by some of the best and brightest performers active today. In addition to the evening dance party, the day will include two workshops, one led by master dance leader Steve Weintraub exploring different styles of Yiddish dance, the other, led by myself and clarinetist Michael Winograd, will be on the nuances of klezmer style for advances instrumentalists. The dance party will be a free event, while the workshops will have a suggested donation of $5-10. My goal for this event is to give Philadelphians the chance to experience the incredible energy and joy the combination of klezmer music and dance gives when each is done at its highest level. For the past several years, this groups of musicians - with Steve leading the dancing - has been thrilling audiences and moving bodies all across North America and Europe at places like the Richmond Folk Festival, Lowell Folk Festival, the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, and the Festival of Jewish Culture in Cracow, Poland. I want the “The Big Yiddish Dance Party” to be a meaningful and fun way to experience klezmer for everyone, whether they are deep into the music, or hearing it for the first time. Trombonist Dan Blacksberg is quickly making a name for himself in his native Philadelphia and internationally for his work in the experimental and Jewish music worlds. A 2012 Pew Fellow in the Arts, Blacksberg brings a burly, rough-edged sound intended to push at the technical and textural extremes of his instrument and carve out new spaces for the trombone in whatever genre in which he finds himself. He is a leader with projects such as the Dan Blacksberg Trio, Hasidic punk band Electric Simcha, and co-leader of new music duo Archer Spade, and noise duo Superlith. He is also highly in demand as a sideman, working with groups such as the Anthony Braxton Quartet and Alan Bern's Other Europeans. As a teacher and practitioner of traditional klezmer on the trombone, Dan has taught performed in festivals all over the world, such as the Klezkamp, Klezkanada, Lowell Folk Festival, the Krakow Fesitval of Jewish Culture, and Yiddish Summer Weimar. Born on Governor’s Island and Bar Mitzvahed in the Bronx, Steven Lee Weintraub received his dance training in Manhattan with Alvin Ailey and Erick Hawkins, among others, and studied dance pedagogy with Phyllis Weikert. He is in international demand as a teacher of traditional Yiddish dance at festivals and workshops including Klezkamp, Klezkanada, and festivals in Krakow, Weimar, Furth, Paris and London to name a few. Much of his career has been creating and performing Jewish dance; he has worked with choreographers Felix Fibich and Shula Kivel, and has performed the work of Fred Berk. He was a principal dancer and choreographer with the Israeli folkdance group Parparim and was assistant director of the annual Israeli Folk Dance Festival in NYC. For many years he choreographed and danced with his partner Sharona Paller Rubenstien.  This spring, Steve was the recipient of a DanceBridge space grant, which facilitated the debut performance of the New Yiddish Dance Ensemble. Though only 30 years of age, Michael Winograd is considered a modern master of the klezmer clarinet style. Like others in the klezmer revival he has a jazz background, and graduated with distinction in 2005 from the New England Conservatory in Boston. Winograd has since fully immersed himself in the klezmer world. In 2006, he founded the first Yiddish dance house, or Tanzhoyz, in New York City where traditional European Jewish dance is performed, taught and celebrated by some of the greatest musicians and dancers in klezmer today. He also keeps the tradition alive by teaching at Living Traditions' annual KlezKamp in New York and KlezKanada outside of Montreal, and has been musical director of "Kids and Yiddish" at the Folksbeine Yiddish Theater in New York City. He has taught and performed all over the world. Nov. 18th: The Big Yiddish Dance Party at The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St. 2PM: Dance Workshop, 4PM: Music Masterclass, 7PM: Public Dance Party. Workshops suggested donation $5-10, Party: Free ###

Using Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Capoeira, Flamenco, Modern and Ballet training, our dancers collaboratively converse with movement and create dialogue with expression. We are driven by creativity, human emotions, and a desire to be released from the four walls of our daily existence. Our movement vocabulary is a collective effort that aims to create a reachable area for all people to participate and communicate. Artistic Director, Malabika Guha presents the piece “The Love That Remains”.
