Performer bios for 11/21/12 show:
Biancia Boom- Influenced by female artists like Odetta and Joni Mitchell, Bianca Boom puts her own take on accoustics. A player of strings and electric things, her favorite color is Blue. Counting rap as a form of folk music, she's sure to give you a different take on the world. Letting her eclectic heritage guide music from the Soul.
Penning her first book of songs at 15 on guitar, and dropping out of college to become a singer, Bianca freestyle rapped and sang her way across the US and echoed her voice in the hills of North Carolina as a member of Granola Funk Express in the late 90's, before moving to Philadelphia in 1999 where she found herself as fiddle player. Having played fiddle on such stages as the Mann Music Center, the Cleff Club, and the Painted Bride so early in her career, she was thrown deep into her lessons of the rich musical heritage Philly has to offer.
In picking her guitar back up and producing her first demo in 2007, she has followed with singles and continued to collaborate with local talent on various live and recorded projects. In 2012, she brings to bear a sound that takes you through the stories of her many travels through the US and the World in the spirit of Reggae, Blues, Folk, and Hip-Hop.
the Femme-mynistiques- Trio of sis-starz merging forces w/ fresh beats, mystic vocals, rhymes & lyrical poetics devoted to the “femminine mystic”. Together these three ladies bring to the stage backgrounds in beat/music production, dance choreography, staging theater productions, hostess-ing venues, singing, rap & spoken word performances (see link above for more info)!
Jawn Zap7-Underground Philly Hip-hop music projects/Rap Artist (see link above for more info)!
Kalamandir Dance Company- Kalamandir Dance Company (501c3) is a contemporary dance ensemble that uses the vocabulary of classical Indian dance to explore new spaces of artistic expression. Instead of diminishing the foundation of our classical styles, we look to investigate their communicative potential when merged with Western dance traditions. Using Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Capoeira, Flamenco, Modern and Ballet training, our dancers collaboratively converse with movement and create dialogue with expression. We are driven by creativity, human emotions, and a desire to be released from the four walls of our daily existence. Our movement vocabulary is a collective effort that aims to create a reachable area for all people to participate and communicate. Artistic Director, Malabika Guha presents the piece “The Love That Remains”. Based on the Portuguese word “saudades,” this piece explores the fervent state of longing by channeling the painful sweetness of remembering a loved one from whom we have been separated while reveling in the joy that they may return (see link above for more info)!
Kintala- experimental world music percussion project (see link above for more info)!
