Fantasy Opera Sequel to “Sephro,” comes to the Fringe
Philadelphia, PA--- “Sephro: The Vengeance,” sequel to its predecessor, “Sephro” will be presented by Fantasy Weavers Original Theatre and Opera for Children and Adults. This company’s mission is to present new fantasy works with meaning to the underprivileged children and adults, and minorities everywhere.
Both the book and the music of Sephro were written by Kate Quinn, President of Fantasy Weavers.
Sephro itself took Kate Quinn fourteen years to write and compose, having first began the project in 1996. Arias and duets from Sephro were premiered with such musical groups as the Main Line Opera Guild, BCV Performing Opera and Concert Artists, Delaware Valley Opera Company and Kit Crissey’s Composer Showcase. After much hard work and dedication, Quinn finally finished the opera in December of 2009. This past September, she presented the full opera to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, at the Rotunda. It was very well received, boasting a fine sized audience, one of whom said that the whole experience was like “a preview to a Met performance.” Quinn is thrilled to premier “Sephro: The Vengeance,” for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2012. Quinn’s operatic and science fiction background are combined in this unique story, which should be fascinating to audiences looking for something a little different from the usual fare. Both children and adults alike will appreciate the fantasy and reality dichotomy and the melodious music that keeps the story moving.
Sephro: The Vengeance continues Sephro’s healing power of music, the universal language, that takes us on a journey of the great mystical mysteries of life, love, death, salvation and transformation. The coven of pagan witches from Earth, having lost their High Priestess, now join the Sephrons on their own planet. The aim is vengeance, as well as the conquering of their foes.
In the story of Sephro, Crystonian, the father of the coven, lost his wife Aera to a fire set by the evil Sephron renegade. Jondu joined forces with Corianna, the estranged adopted daughter of Crystonian and Aera. Together, they planned to destroy Sephro as it was, making it theirs to rule by keeping the Sephrons enslaved. Their attempts to invade Sephro and to destroy the co-creator of its sustenance, Torli, failed. Crystonian, the earth witch, saved the co-creator Lurin's life by interrupting a ritual in which Jondu and Corianna would have killed him.
Meanwhile, Crystonian’s son Cryss had forged a romance with a young Sephron girl named Craela in the astral world. Jondu, unwilling to be defeated, captured Craela from Cryss, while the two of them were declaring their love. To achieve his destruction, Jondu, along with Corianna, set the entire witch coven on fire. The High Priestess, Aera, wife of Crystonian and mother to Cryss, was killed in the fire. Cryss and Crystonian managed to escape. With the help of Craela, Lurin, and Ror Shoki Tanna, the overseer of Sephro, they were transported to Sephro.
Now begins our story, Sephro: The Vengeance. Once on the planet Sephro, Cryss immediately weds Craela. This is a great threat to Jondu, as love between the two planets is a powerful weapon. Crystonian, having been comforted in his grief by Lurin, unexpectedly falls in love with him. Their feelings are an added weapon as Lurin declares, "Love and Unity will destroy all evil!" With this double threat to Jondu and Corianna, there is a plethora of strength on Sephro's part. However, the forces of evil are determined and strong. Let the Vengeance begin!
The production will take place on Saturday, September 8th at 7pm and Sunday, September 9th at 3pm. Admission is $15.00 for the general public. Students and seniors get an additional $5 off with ID. Sephro the Vengeance is recommended for audiences 13 and up. Reservations can be made by visiting the Philadelphia Fringe Festival website at http://www.livearts-fringe.org/festival/ticket-info.cfm. You may also call 610-389-9572, Fantasy Weavers’ main number, or just purchase admission at the door.
Featured in the cast are, among others, soprano Eve Edwards(Corianna), Tenor James R. Longacre(Jondu), Soprano Elizabeth Oliver(Craela), Bass-Baritone John Rudolph(Crystonian), Mezzo-Soprano Kate Quinn(Cryss), tenor Dennis Kalup(Lurin), and baritone Stephen Ream(Ror Shoki Tanna). "Psycho-Celtic" Band Brings Back Rock Opera for Fringe 2012
Multi-media Extravaganza Continues to Evolve
(Philadelphia, PA- For Immediate Release), Sylvia Platypus, Philadelphia's (and possibly the world's) only psycho-celtic glam-blues band will appear at The Rotunda for a return performance of their original rock opera. Debuted at the 2011 Philly Fringe Festival, "Le Mirage/Dead City Philly" is the archetypal drama of a young widower obsessed with a woman who resembles his dead wife. Based in part on Georges Rodenbach's 1892 novella "Bruges La Morte", this multi-media production features elements of theatre, dance, video, and music. The band's memorable songs serve as a Greek chorus to the narrative.
"Those who witnessed our Fringe 2011 run, and our "one-show-only" the following February know what they saw," says Janet Bressler, vocalist and principal songwriter for Sylvia Platypus. "Those who weren't there- well, they may have heard they missed something special. But here's a chance to join us on our journey through 'version 3', as we keep expanding the audience experience."
Take the vocal mannerisms of Edith Piaf and Levi Stubbs and combine them with a stage presence that is equal parts James Brown and Judy Garland, and you have some idea of Bressler's lead-singer style . Add the soul-searing Waddy Wachtel-meets-Brian May guitar work of Bill Barone (formerly of the '70's era German symphonic rock band "Wallenstein) , the heart-stirring musical textures of award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Rutan on highland and uilleann pipes, tin whistles, English horn and Neopolitan Zampogna, and the take-no-prisoners rhythm section of Michael Southerton on rhythm guitar, Ruchama Bilenky on bass, and Rosalba Gallo on drums and you get a six-piece outfit (three men, three women) that delivers a tough and tender genre-busting impact.
In addition to their duties as band members, Southerton portrays Liam, the young widower, and Bilenky takes the roles of Jenny/Claudine.
"What would become LeMirage/Dead City Philly began in 2007 with the first version of an original ballad entitled 'Claudine', but the personal experience I wanted to tell was too big for one song," says Bressler. "In the course of developing it into a rock opera, I was introduced to 'Bruges-la-Morte'. This 19th century novella’s uncanny similarity to my autobiographical story mirrored the doppelganger themes I was grappling with. It's art imitating life imitating art."
"Le Mirage/Dead City Philly" is a rollicking tale of love, death and bagpipes.

Ars Nova workshop
presents
Pretty Monsters
Katherine Young, bassoon
Erica Dicker, violin
Owen Stewart-Robertson, electric guitar
Mike Pride, drums
Ars Nova Workshop presents the Philadelphia debut of Pretty Monsters, the new quartet led by the bassoonist Katherine Young.
Referencing the album Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins, The Wire called the Chicago-based composer and bassoonist Katherine Young a “bassoon colossus.” A former student of Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier, Young has worked with Peter Evans, Mary Halvorson, F.M. Einheit (Einsturzende Neubauten), Jessica Pavone and Weasel Walter. She is a member of the Architeuthis Walks On Land duo with the violist Amy Cimini, and the quartet Till By Turning with Cimini, the violinist Erica Dicker and the pianist Emily Manzo. Young also performs solo and, in 2009, released her debut solo album, Further Secret Origins, on Porter Records. Downbeat writes that the album makes “seriously bold leaps for the bassoon.”
Young's Pretty Monsters quartet brings together a powerful group of young musicians: the violinist Dicker, the concertmaster of Anthony Braxton's Trillium/Tri-Centric Orchestra, has premiered works by Olivia Block and Tim Daisy; the Brooklyn guitarist Owen Stewart-Robertson is a member of the groups Make A Circus, Old Salt and This Sporting Life; the drummer Mike Pride is a member of From Bacteria To Boys and has worked with Boredoms, Vijay Iyer, Matana Roberts and Nate Wooley. Pretty Monsters' debut album arrives this month on the Public Eyesore label.

A SPECIAL JOHN COLTRANE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
BOBBY ZANKEL’S WARRIORS OF THE WONDERFUL SOUND FEATURING DAVE LIEBMAN AND ODEAN POPE PERFORMING JOHN COLTRANE’S A LOVE SUPREME
West Philadelphia’s Bobby Zankel was drawn to the saxophone by the thrilling new sounds being explored in the 1960s jazz scene, in particular the music of John Coltrane. He studied with Cecil Taylor, eventually became involved with the avant-garde jazz scene of the early 1970s, performing alongside the likes of bassist William Parker and violinist Billy Bang. Zankel is now one of the leading lights of the local jazz community. His most influential work has been his ten years of composing for his long-standing big band Warriors of the Wonderful Sound which features many of Philadelphia’s best musicians. For this very special performance, he is joined by two saxophone masters: Odean Pope, best known for his two decades with the Max Roach Quartet; and Dave Liebman, who performed and recorded with Miles Davis from 1970 to 1974. In celebration of saxophone legend John Coltrane’s birthday, the Warriors and these specials guests revisit his seminal 1964 recording, A Love Supreme, which they will play in its entirety.

PYXL8R, Groupthink, Bernhard Wöstheinrich & Tim Motzer
PYXL8R - Ken Palmer is the man behind the PYXL8R name and is an active musician and graphic artist. Ken creates ambient and electronic music as PYXL8R, and is also a member of the prog rock band Brainstatik.
Groupthink - Groupthink work up vast drones of machinic elegance buttressed by windswept atmospheres, sentient noises, and the odd rhythmic pulse. Utilizing all manners of instruments analog and digital, archaic and contemporary, the duo improvise with wild abandon, yielding, thanks to their various iPhemera, ambience with teeth.
Bernhard Wöstheinrich and Tim Motzer - Bernhard started in about 1987 to intensely experiment with his own sounds and tunes after he found out that drawing and painting simply weren’t enough to adequately express himself. He went about to find something that might had a more “performing” approach. Inspired by the likes of Einstürzende Neubauten and other informal and experimental music, he finally began to work in a very personal way to compose and record some early tapes. The rest, as they say, is history.
After 12 years of world touring, stunning collaborations, and over 60 albums of credits—this Philadelphia-based guitarist Tim Motzer continues to traverse manifold territories in music and has developed a distinct textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques ala Cage. He releases his music on his 1k Recordings imprint and webcasts monthly sessions from his studio at 1ksessions.com. He also continues to score for the world of modern dance and film.

AND THEN...
November 9th 2012 - Mayakara, Gina Ferrera, Dan Miñoza
Mayakara - Mayakara, Sanskrit for Conjurer of Illusions, is the acoustic/electronic duo of Bill Fieger and Mike Hunter. They weave the acoustic elements of Bill’s custom built instruments and Mike’s electronic instruments and processors. Their unworldly sound invites the listener to join the shaman’s dance and see through the illusion that is “reality.” Bill also performs with Stairs to Nowhere and solo as Oblivious Solitude. Mike performs solo as Ombient, with Brainstatik and hosts the Ambient/Electronic/Experimental music show, “Music with Space” on WPRB 103.3 FM Princeton University Radio.
Gina Ferrera - Gina fuses folkloric polyrhythm with electronic music using a multi-dimensional MIDI drum controller, called the trapKAT and a 4-octave MIDI mallet keyboard, called malletKAT. Triggering live loops in a style termed, IDD- “Intelligent dance-drumming”, her live hybrid set-up is comprised of traditional percussion, improvised loop control, vocal effects and drumming on her custom Alternate Mode MIDI trapKAT to create electro-organic ethno-techno.
Dan Miñoza - Dan is a guitarist like no other. Nothing you see or hear from Dan is anything you would expect from a guitar player, which makes him so unique in our opinion. One facet of Miñoza's sound is his weapon of choice. Dan plays a Warr guitar which utilizes the "tap" method of playing that allows guitarists the ability to play single notes or chords with each hand. The approach is more akin to a keyboard based instrument than the typical style of guitar technique of plucking the strings. Dan, his instrument, and his intelligent use of software processing, particularly Native Instruments Guitar Rig, are a fantastic treat for the ears and eyes.
