  • 8:00 PMKinloch Nelson, Brian John McBrearty
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Kinloch Nelson, Brian John McBreartyClavius Productions presents the return of Rochester guitarist Kinloch Nelson to Philadelphia, with Mesmeric Haze's Brian John McBrearty supporting. Kinloch made his first Philly appearance in April at Brickbat Books and played 90 minutes of the most exquisite acoustic fingerpicking we've seen in quite some time. Tompkins Square released his first legitimate LP this year and after playing and teaching in the Rochester/Buffalo/upstate NY region for 50 years, Kinloch is determined to bring his music to new cities. If you're a fan of John Fahey, Sandy Bull and American Primitive solo guitar, this show is not to be missed!Kinloch Nelson (Tompkins Square, Rochester NY)Kinloch Nelson's 50-year career has run the gamut from solo classical recitals and folk concerts to club and festival dates playing country, jazz, rock, rockabilly, and R&B. He has contributed to Acoustic Guitar magazine, been reviewed in Just Jazz guitar magazine, been featured in concert on PBS TV and radio, and performed around the US and the UK. Teaching credits include 25 years at The Hochstein Music School in Rochester, NY, music classes at Maryland Summer Center For The Arts, and workshops at the University of Rochester, S.U.N.Y. Oswego and numerous guitar festivals around the US and Canada. Performance credits, among others, include Time/Warner Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Owen Sound Folk Festival; Fretted Instrument Guild of America; Newport, Healdsburg, and Miami Guitar Shows, The NAAM Shows in Nashville & Los Angeles, and ten years as a regular performer and teacher at the Luthier's Invitational Guitar Festival in Woodstock NY."Listening to Kinloch Nelson is a journey through American roots, jazz, country, blues, classical and whatever it is that ties them all together. " (Frank De Blase, City Newspaper, Rochester NY)“Kinloch Nelson’s terrific Partly on Time comes to us via the ever-reliable Tompkins Square label. Rescued from age-old tapes, the slightly lo-fi sound here is deliciously warm and stony, the perfect setting for Nelson’s laid-back instrumental compositions. As a player, Nelson is an original; he rambles but never meanders, wanders but never gets lost. A total gem, well worth your time.” (Tyler Wilcox ~ aquariumdrunkard.com)“This is American guitar music born not of the blues, but glistening, plaintive chaconnes and tone poems with their roots in Segovia medievalism, European folk music, and the Northern renaissance. Beguiling and strange, this is a real find.” (Andrew Male, Mojo Magazine)“Sublime solo guitar work from Kinloch Nelson is very much in the more underground acoustic side of the ' 60s – post-folk, and dedicated to unusual tunings – and with a very personal, lyrical quality that almost makes Nelson something of a bridge between the older Takoma Records scene, and the acoustic underground of the '70s.” (Dusty Grooves)“Nelson’s playing, though virtuosic, is unlike the mathematical workouts of a Leo Kottke or the mutated ragtime of a Duck Baker. It’s sweet and lyrical (“Solitudes”); trancey (“The Eyes of Fair Molly”), and lightly swinging (“Coming Down From the Ceiling,” which sounds like it hatched Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”)." (c-ville.com)"In a genre where players often seem to rush to mysticism, Nelson plays here as if he has all the time in the world to leave his mark." (David Fricke, Rolling Stone)Brian McBrearty (Philadelphia)Brian John McBrearty is a Philadelphia-based guitarist, vocalist and composer. Originally inspired by John Fahey, Jack Rose and other purveyors of American Primitive style guitar, Brian has released several albums of instrumental music that combines finger-picked guitar with ambient textures and minimalist composition techniques. Brian's latest songs feature him singing in addition to playing guitar in open tunings and draw influence from English folk of the early '70s (Michael Chapman, Bridget St. John and others), cosmic jazz and drone music from the likes of Terry Riley and Alice Coltrane, and present-day vibe merchants such as Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore and Ryley Walker. Brian is currently recording a new solo album with a full band that will be released in 2020.Admission is FREE (donations for artists strongly encouraged)

  • 8:00 PMThe Secret Cinema revives IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFESTYLE: A VALENTINE TO THE 1970S
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM The Secret Cinema revives IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFESTYLE: A VALENTINE TO THE 1970STravel back to the Seventies once more on Thursday, October 10, when the Secret Cinema dusts off IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFESTYLE: A VALENTINE TO THE 1970S* for a fresh showing at the Rotunda. This hodgepodge of historickitsch aims to restore the glittery glory of the original Decade of Bad Taste, via an assemblage of rare short films including forgotten schoolfilms, television shows, commercials, and trailers. This is a repeat of a popular Secret Cinema program that was presented in 2005.We'd dipped into the Seventies in many previous Secret Cinema presentations, but this program was our first devoted entirely to the disco decade. Plundered from the depths of the Secret Cinema archives, most of these films are unlikely to be shown anywhere else. Enjoy a time when pop culture stars had names like Kreskin, Meadowlark Lemon and Donny and Marie. Catch up on Seventies nostalgia again, and be allcaught-up for the current revival of the 1990s -- when Seventies appreciation first started to bloom and our current mobius strip of self-reference began. There will be one complete show at 8:00 pm. Admission is free. All Secret Cinema presentations are projected in 16mm film on a giant screen (not video).Just a few highlights of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFESTYLE: A VALENTINE TO THE 1970S are:THE ENERGY-ENVIRONMENT GAME (1973) - In this fascinating slice of pre-Three Mile Island history, a "hip" teacher offers a "relevant""role-playing" game to his class: high school students (in various BRADY BUNCH/OVER THE EDGE fashions) take on the roles of different members of a fictional community to debate the proposed installation of a nuclear power plant. As the film was produced by a utility company, you can guess the result.TELEVISION: BEHIND THE SCENES (1978) - This educational film takes a look at the workers and work needed to put together a national TV series. Lucky for us it's THE DONNY AND MARIE SHOW!THE AMAZING WORLD OF KRESKIN (1971) - Rare kinescope from the first year of this popular syndicated TV series. Kreskin was a nebbishy Canadian magician who performed standard mindreading tricks but achieved a brief stardom by appearing at a time when audiences were hungry for proof of "paranormal" phenomenon.Plus much, much more!*NOTE: The phrase "It's a Wonderful Lifestyle" is both homage to and utter theft from Candi Strecker's identically-named fanzines of 1990 and 1993. Her brilliant analysis of the Seventies stands as the last word on the subject. The fanzines may still be available somewhere incyberspace.SECRET CINEMA WEBSITE: http://www.thesecretcinema.comAdmission is FREE

  • 8:00 PMBowerbird pres. Laraaji with Chris Powell
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM BowerbirdpresentsLaraaji with Chris PowellPhiladelphia-born, New Jersey-raised polymath Laraaji has maintained a pursuit of spiritual transcendence through music since the mid-70s. After several years of studiously developing an aesthetic informed by Eastern faiths and transcendental research in his long-time home in Harlem, in 1979 Brian Eno stumbled upon him busking in Washington Square Park in New York, improvising celestial meditations with his electric zither. The producer invited him to contribute to his influential Ambient series, resulting in the 1980 album Day of Radiance. Ever since he’s remained an outsized figure in new age and ambient music, eschewing synthesizers in favor of hand-made sounds, consistently embracing a human presence in his ever-seeking performances. Whether using monochord instruments, singing, or deploying electronics-kissed percussion, Laraaji’s music remains connected to cosmic African-American tradition, and as hypnotically beautiful as his work has been he’s never been afraid to inject ripples of tension and dissonance into his trance-inducing journeys.Philadelphia’s Christopher Sean Powell is well known for his involvement in art- rock bands like Need New Body, Man Man, and Icy Demons, but over the years he’s also developed a vibrant modular synthesizer practice. His pieces are at once whimsical and mesmerizing, a playful tumble of pointillistic counterpoint where cascades of blorpy tones coalesce into entrancing melodies.Admission is FREE

  • 7:30 PMTouch of Classics! Entertainment pres. Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone and The Medium
  • 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM  Touch of Classics! Entertainment is bringing Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone and The Medium to The Rotunda for a contrasting, dynamic duo of hilarious comedy and macabre drama. Touch of Classics! James R. Longacre and Dorothy Cardella bring these fully staged and costumed musical presentations for the enjoyment of all this Halloween season.Although the two operas are highly contrasted in subject matter, both work well in theatrical terms. The plot of The Telephone revolves around the attempts of Ben to propose marriage to Lucy in her apartment before he leaves on a trip. Numerous phone calls and conversations preoccupy her and prevent him from popping the question. Highly frustrated—to the point of trying to cut the telephone wires—he eventually leaves, but then makes one last attempt by proposing to her from a phone booth outside in the street. She accepts and before he leaves, reminds him of her phone number in a last duet. The subject matter of The Medium is considerably darker. The central character is Madame Flora, a fake medium. She uses her daughter Monica and her adopted mute gypsy son, Toby, whom she found with his tongue cut out, to stage séances. During one of these, Madame Flora feels something touch her. Following a confrontation with her clients, she confesses to her trickery, but her clients refuse to believe her: they are only too anxious to believe in the existence of their daughter’s spirit. Drinking heavily, Flora hears voices. Toby, while hidden behind a curtain, bumps it, suggesting to Flora the presence of the spirits she believes to be hearing, ending with tragic consequences.(Due to the nature of the show, this production is not suitable for children under 13 years of age)The production features a superb cast of performers in this fully staged and costumed production at The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, PA. Included in the cast are Dorothy Cardella, Stephen Raytek, Sharon Derstine, Sarah Baumgarten, Abby Culp, Lisa Landley, Edward Bogusz and Mary Punshon. Directing the opera is Michael Tunney and Music Director is Joseph Krupa. The performances are at The Rotunda on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania with shows Saturday, October 19th at 7:30pm and Sunday, the 20th at 5:00pm. Tickets are $15.00, cash only at the door. The venue is wheelchair accessible and on street and public parking is available.Touch of Classics! looks forward to seeing everyone at The Rotunda for these fully staged and costumed performances on Saturday, October 19th at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 20th at 5:00pm, so join us for a “Comedy-Macabre” good time.

  • 8:00 PMHarsh Narayan
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Harsh Narayanpresented by Fire Museum Presents Co-sponsored by South Asia Center University of PennsylvaniaFree/donations appreciatedHarsh Narayan:Harsh Narayan is a leading sarangi player of the younger generation and performer of Hindustani Classical Music living in Mumbai, India. He has performed and recorded with many Indian Classical Musicians worldwide. To say that Harsh Narayan’s life has been steeped in the classical music of India since he was born is an understatement. His father is the sarod maestro Brij Narayan and his aunt is the sarangi virtuoso Aruna Narayan Kalle. And as if that is not enough of a rarified birth, his grandfather is none other than the legendary sarangi maestro Pandit Ram Narayan, credited by experts worldwide for bringing the sarangi to the forefront of Indian Classical Music as a solo instrument of the highest order. Of the Pandit, the great Yehudi Menuhin has said, “The sarangi … in the hands of Ram Narayan most revealingly expresses the very soul of Indian feelings and thought.”Born in Mumbai in 1985, Harsh Narayan has had the great fortune of studying with his grandfather since the age of six. While under the caring guidance of his illustrious teacher, Harsh’s musicianship was developed and his natural talent was exposed. Right from the start, Harsh embraced this training with a passion for the sarangi, a highly technical and very challenging instrument to play. This passion has only been surpassed by his devotion to his grandfather and to the musical legacy that he wholeheartedly embraced. This musical foundation, a well-rounded and rigorous training by a family of maestros, lead to a virtuosity that can be witnessed in his concert presentations, where the depth of his musical perception has earned him an “A” graded artist rating from All India Radio. His total command of sarangi playing technique allows him an enviable degree of creative freedom, coaxing the inherent musicality out of the instrument, with the flair of a seasoned performer.Armed with a unique musical background and an invaluable classical training, Harsh Narayan is eminently qualified to expand upon the enormous body of work of his grandfather while establishing himself among the new generation of Indian Classical Musicians and sarangi torch bearers.http://firemuseumpresents.com/events/harsh-narayan/Admission is FREE. • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

    Arthur Brooks Ensemble V

Co-presented with Fire Museum and Clavius Productions.

Trumpeter-composer ARTHUR BROOKS is one of the unsung heroes of the new music. In his 40+ year career he has collaborated with such legendary figures as Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Sonny Sharrock, Alan Silva, and Frank Wright among others. For over 20 years he taught alongside Dixon in the Black Music Division at Bennington College. Brooks founded Ensemble V at Bennington College in 1973 and the music has continued to evolve. Though Brooks is technically the leader and creator — or perhaps curator — of Ensemble V, he emphasizes that the band is a democracy. “Everybody’s a leader. And everybody has big ears. We find ourselves in areas that I would like to take home and develop and write, but I wouldn’t want to limit what we’re going to do.” For this performance, he’ll be joined by Jeremy Harlos – bass; Bill Heminway – trumpet & flugelhorn; Anthony Santor – bass and Matt Weston – percussion.

    Los Bomberos De La Calle

The group began its journey in 2013 in El Barrio of North Philly, led by Anthony Mendez who gathered a few friends who knew a bit about the history and music of  Bomba and Plena. Throughout the years they have grown to become not just a better music group but have grown into a family who spreads the knowledge and cultural music of Puerto Rico by performing at many community events, school or community workshops as well as weddings, birthdays and parrandas during the holidays.

Bomba music is the oldest genre of music in Puerto Rico. This genre is a blend of three different cultures; West African, Taino Indian, and Spaniard, which has gives Puerto Ricans a big piece of their identity for understanding who they are and where they come from. Our Ancestors expressed their anger and frustration (as well as joy & happiness) through the dance and song, as the lead drummer known as the Primo (or Subidor) whom interprets the dancers movements into different tones and sounds while the Buliador, which is a large drum made of wood and animal skin that keeps the basic rhythm.

Plena music is played with hand held drums called Panderos or what some may also call panderetas. Plena is mainly played with 3 panderos and a guiro. Plena music is played at many festivals and or even during the holiday events which are called parrandas.
