  • 8:00 PMAMERICAN JOB (1996 / 90 minutes) and TBA Aki Kaurismäki Directed Movie
  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

    Andrew’s Video Vault 2015

FREE Screenings Continuous From 8 PM on the Second THURSDAY of Every Month!

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Cinema Studies Program and The Rotunda at the University of Pennsylvania.

April 9 TBA Aki Kaurismäki Directed Movie

and  AMERICAN JOB (1996 / 90 minutes) Writer/director Chris Smith’s (1999′s American Movie) debut is a hilariously straight-faced dark comedy about labor in the U.S. It follows the stork-like mumbler Randy as he undergoes training and orientation at a variety of low-paying, low-skilled jobs. The fictional film’s stark documentary style gives the boredom of modern work a strange urgency in this unique indie film. Guest Host and Curator: Dan Buskirk of Phawker.com   May 14 DR. MABUSE, THE GAMBLER [DR. MABUSE, DER SPIELER – EIN BILD DER ZEIT] (1922 / 271 minutes) The most complete version of Fritz Lang’s two-part allegory, about a criminal mastermind who is both the cause (and product of) economic free-fall and social decadence in Weimar-era Berlin.   June 11 Two daring comedies that use blackface/whiteface to comment on race relations. SOUL MAN (1986 / 104 minutes) New World Pictures high concept teen comedy about a white kid (C. Thomas Howell) who dons blackface in order to get a minority scholarship to Harvard would be completely reprehensible if it weren’t such an accurate snapshot of 1980s America. James Earl Jones slums it as a college professor, and stars Rae Dawn Chong and Howell would marry after working together on this film. Directed by Steve Miner. WATERMELON MAN (1970 / 100 minutes) Melvin Van Peebles became the second African-American to direct at a Hollywood studio when he made this film about a bigoted white man (Godfrey Cambridge—in whiteface) who wakes up one morning to discover he has turned Black. Panned upon its initial release, it has became a true cult classic. Guest Host and Curator: Mike Dennis of Reelblack Cinema

July 9 CHAMELEON STREET (1989 / 94 minutes) Writer/director/actor Wendell B. Harris Jr’s first and only feature tells the true story of con man Douglas Street, a bored and ingenious African American male who passes himself off to white society as a journalist, doctor and scholar. A wicked and tragic satire on being black and brilliant in America. UFOria (1985 / 93 minutes) Writer/Director John Binder’s satiric look at the Southwestern U.S. and religion follows a Waylon Jennings-loving drifter (Fred Ward) hooking up with a faith healer (Harry Dean Stanton) and a cashier who has visions of a UFO communion. Guest Host and Curator: Dan Buskirk of Phawker.com   August 13 TIE XI QU: WEST OF TRACKS: PART ONE: RUST (2003 / 240 minutes) In part one of his three-part, nine hour documentary, Wang Bing hypnotically charts post-industrial decay and its effects on impoverished workers who live in northeast China. [Tie Xi Qu: West of Tracks part two, Remnants, and part three, Rails, will screen at subsequent seasons of Andrew’s Video Vault at the Rotunda.]   September 10 TO BE ANNOUNCED Guest Host and Curator: Dan Buskirk of Phawker.com   October 8 THE INNOCENTS (1961 / 100 minutes) Perhaps the most beautifully photographed black & white horror film ever made, this suspenseful masterwork of Gothic atmosphere is an exquisite adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw featuring gripping performances by adult and child actors alike. An unforgettable tour-de-force of supernatural terror and psychological repression. THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943 / 71 minutes) The sense of dread is palpable in this moody and nightmarish tale of urban devil worship from producer Val Lewton. Kim Hunter stars (in her debut performance) as a young woman searching for her missing sister on the menacing streets of 1940′s New York City, with plenty of striking chiaroscuro lighting. Guest Host and Curator: Mike Zaleski   November 12 MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (1937 / 91 minutes) Heart-rending in its truth and emotional beauty, Leo McCarey’s masterpiece and most personal film was created both as a love letter to his recently deceased father and as an exposé of what can happen to elderly Americans without the support of Social Security (or their children). Orson Welles said of the film: “It would make a stone cry.” EVERYBODY’S FINE [STANNO TUTTI BENE] (1990 / 118 minutes) Marcello Mastroianni gives one of his best performances as an elderly widower who traverses Italy to visit his distant offspring, each of whom had given him an impression of their life which turns out to be very different from the actuality. A powerful and beautiful rumination on the relationship between elderly parents and their adult children. Guest Host and Curator: Mike Zaleski   December 10 PERMISSIVE (1970 / 90 min) At the end of the hippie era, a broke young woman arrives in London and is initiated into the counter-culture and the seedy sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll lifestyle of a groupie. Psychedelic soundtrack by Comus and Forever More. DUFFER (1971 / 75 minutes) Joseph Despins and William Dumaresq’s off-beat and lyrical character study of a British teenage boy shuttlecocking between a sadistic old man and motherly prostitute.

    Sir Richard Bishop:

Richard Bishop is an experimental guitarist whose improvisations and compositions often reflect the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail.

Richard is perhaps best known as a founding member (along with brother Alan Bishop) of experimental ethnic-improv pioneers and underground tricksters Sun City Girls, who for nearly 30 years have produced an extensive discography of over 50 full length albums, 20 one-hour cassettes and a dozen 7" records. Sun City Girls formed in 1981 after the Bishop brothers' stint in the group Paris 1942 which also featured J. Akkari and former Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker.

Richard's first solo record, Salvador Kali, was released by John Fahey's esteemed Revenant label in 1998 under the moniker Sir Richard Bishop (the name stuck). In 2005, Bishop began performing relentlessly as a solo artist, playing throughout Europe, Australia, and the United States.  In May of 2010, Drag City released the album False Flag by Rangda, a new group featuring Bishop, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Comets on Fire), and Chris Corsano (Flower-Corsano Duo, Flaherty/Corsano, Jandek, Bjork, etc). In September of 2012, a second Rangda album came into existence, this one entitled Formerly Extinct.

Richard was also a co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies label (with Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet). The label, whose mission is dedicated to acquiring and releasing obscure sights and sounds from Africa, India, S.E. Asia and beyond, began in 2003 and currently has over 65 releases to its credit.

"Bishop is a splendid acoustic guitarist with a sure touch and an

impressive vocabulary gleaned from the Spanish flamenco and North

Indian classical traditions with a bit of Belgian Django Reinhardt's

gypsy swing jazz mixed in." - Bill Meyer (Ink Blot Magazine)

    Robert Millis:

I have a golden childhood memory of an attic in a very old house.

Crawling through the dark, creaking front part of the attic I found a

room bathed in sunlight, with a pile of forgotten books.  On top of

this book throne sat an old wind-up gramophone. This memory informs my

work:  the sense of exploration, the secrets old books and 78rpm

records hold in their designs, the scars of their age, their receding

    sounds and stories.

I am a founding member of Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT, a solo artist

and a frequent contributor to the Sublime Frequencies label. I have

scored long and short films, created sound installations, produced and

designed audio projects, and released many LPs and CDs. My work veers

haphazardly between sound art, music concrete, instrumental, improv,

field recording, song and collage. I have a deep interest in folk and

traditional music, so imagine Pete Seeger trying to cover Revolution 9

    by the Beatles.

During 2012 and 2013 I was a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar in

India studying Indian music, sound art and the early recording

    industry.

  • 8:00 PMRob Mazurek and Black Cube SP pres. by Ars Nova Workshop
  • 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

    Ars Nova Workshop

    presents

Rob Mazurek and Black Cube SP

    Jazz Appreciation Month

    Rob Mazurek, cornet + electronics

Thomas Rohrer, rabeca + soprano saxophone

Mauricio Takara, drums, electronics + cavaquinho

Guilherme Granado, keyboard, synths + sampler

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to announce the return of Rob Mazurek with his new group, Black Cube SP.

Chicago-based composer, improviser and multi-media artist Rob Mazurek has drawn inspiration from a multitude of audio and visual styles and sources over the past three decades. Augmenting his cornet playing with computer programming, electronics and an assortment of keyboards, Mazurek's broad electro-acoustic palette defies simple categorization.

While living in Brazil from 2000 to 2005, Mazurek immersed himself in the sights and sounds of the Amazonian rain forest, the plateaus of Brasilia and the urban intensity of São Paulo. Inspired by these disparate experiences, he constructed exotic soundscapes using such esoteric source material as the sounds of electric eels recorded at INPA research laboratory in Manaus and audio culled from storm systems on the outskirts of Brasilia. It was in São Paulo that he met Mauricio Takara and Guilherme Granado, his partners in the São Paulo Underground, which continues to spur his interest in the Brazilian sensibilities of sound and color.

Mazurek's newest ensemble, Black Cube SP, features his long standing São Paulo Underground trio with the addition of Thomas Rohrer. Rohrer earned his stripes as a master of the keening rabeca (Brazilian viola) through intense studies with the instrument’s leading practitioners in Brazil’s northeast. The group released it's debut record, Return the Tides, on Cuneiform in 2014. It is a heart-felt tribute to Rob Mazurek's mother, who died on in 2013 just days after receiving a diagnosis of late stage cancer. The record was described by All About Jazz as “Mazurek's most personal and poignant offering to date; cathartic and compelling, it combines avant-garde jazz expressionism, bold electronic experimentation and hypnotic Tropicália rhythms with a profound spirituality, yielding a ritualistic homage worthy of its honoree.”

Mazurek currently leads and composes for a wide variety of ongoing ensembles, including the Chicago Underground Duo, Exploding Star Orchestra, and Pharoah & The Underground (featuring Pharoah Sanders). He has collaborated with a wide variety of luminaries, such as, Bill Dixon, Mike Ladd, Roscoe Mitchell, Yusef Lateef, Fred Anderson, Naná Vasconcelos, Mamelo Sound System, Kassin and Marcelo Camelo, and many others.

250 Miles Crossing Philadelphia Screening and Q&A

Join Netherlands-based artist duo, PolakVanBekkum, University City Science Center, and Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority’s Percent for Art Program, on April 16 for the premiere screening of their innovative navigational documentary, 250 Miles Crossing Philadelphia, followed by a Q&A with the artists. They are looking forward welcoming you, and exchanging thoughts about this new form of documentary making, and the way it portrays the city experience.

Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum arrived from the Netherlands to work on 250 Miles Crossing Philadelphia in May 2014. Their goal was to explore the intersection of art, science and technology through satellite imagery, photography and GPS. The resulting work includes a website documenting their journey, 250miles.net, with an interactive map;a scrim mural at 780 S. 52nd St.; and a 50-minute location-based documentary film.

Philadelphia residents played a large role in creating this new city narrative. Polak and van Bekkum divided the city into a grid and asked volunteers to make recordings from each sector. These routes were expressed in the documentary film using Google Earth satellite images, overlaid with synchronized on-the-ground recordings, to create an audible map of the city.

The evening will formally conclude PolakVanBekkum’s residency with the University City Science Center’s novel public art program, Art Along the Avenue of Technology (AAAT). The Science Center created AAAT as an innovative way to fulfill its Percent for Art obligation, which requires that at least one percent of the budget for new construction is used for commissioning original works of art.

Tickets (suggested donation)*: $5.00 advance; $10.00 door *All ticket proceeds will benefit public art in Philadelphia.

    New Works: CINÉ-ROMAN

    curated by J. Louise Makary

    ABOUT THE EVENT

Chris Marker made his groundbreaking work La Jetée, a moving-image film made up of still photographs, in 1962, and it still stands as the most iconic ciné-roman in the canon. Many artists have admired Marker's innovative use of photomontage to weave a narrative, yet few have contributed to the genre. Curated by filmmaker and visual artist J. Louise Makary, New Works: CINÉ-ROMAN will include works, most of them newly commissioned, by a diverse group of artists experimenting with movement, time, and stillness in film and video. In addition to featuring new animated and choreographic video works, this evening-length program will showcase new works by several collaborative teams of filmmakers working with photographers, including one with a live musical component. New Works: CINÉ-ROMAN aims to flood the field with fresh takes on this underexplored form.

  • 6:30 PMTierralismo Good Earth Film Tour Screening
  • 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Tierralismo Good Earth Film TourContact: Alexandra Halkin, DirectorEmail: info(at)americasmediainitiative.orgPhone: 312-282-0135americasmediainitiative.orgThe Americas Media Initiative (AMI) uses film to forge landmark cultural exchange programs between Cuban and U.S. citizens. Over the last three years, AMI has consistently done groundbreaking work in Cuba; organizing tours of independently produced U.S. films in the provinces, engaging with Cuban audiences, and generating significant media coverage on Cuban television, in the press and on the Internet. The films and tours have stimulated conversation and knowledge exchange about issues as diverse as Native American history, civil rights movement and New Orleans politics. In the U.S, AMI has facilitated six tours, bringing Cuban filmmakers to universities, museums and cultural centers across the U.S. In addition, AMI distributes DVDs of independently produced Cuban documentaries, animations and short fictions with Icarus Films, New York. The Tierralismo Good Earth Film Tour will include screenings of the recently released documentary, Tierralismo: Stories from a Cooperative Farm. Part of the AMI Cuba catalogue, Tierralismo is about the history and practices of one of Cuba’s most successful urban farms, the Organoponico Vivero Alamar (Alamar Organic Cooperative). Tierralismo, introduces viewers to everyone from agronomists and senior management to workers who plant, plow, and propagate. What began as a necessity - farming without pesticides and chemical fertilizers - has become a source of pride to coop members. The film shows how they fertilize with compost and cow manure, raise their own insects for biological pest control, and have even created a fully biodegradable alternative to the plastic bag for use with seedlings. Tierralismo also covers non-farming aspects of the operation, such as human resources and accounting practices. In a land where financial resources are scarce and governmentally controlled, transparency and trust are paramount. Many of the coop's members have come from other fields - including a formerpathologist, a fisherman, and an oil-industry worker. More than half are seniors - including an 82-yearold who says when it comes to hoeing, he can outwork anyone in their twenties. This is a film not only about the food and the farm but the characters who make it happen. The filmmaker, Alejandro Ramirez, and one of the co-founders of the Organoponico, Isis Salcines, will accompany the tour, creating a dynamic forum to share knowledge and create learning opportunities on film and food security, and the people who are driving both movements in Cuba. Alexandra Halkin, Director of AMI will accompany the Cuban visitors on the tour. Not only will the tour provide an opportunity for a diverse U.S. audience to hear firsthand about experiences in urban agriculture from Cubans, but the Cuban visitors will be able to learn from academics, government representatives, and community activists engaged in building sustainable food systems in various locations throughout the United States.By meeting with food activists in the Midwest and the Northeast, and farmers, activists and policy makers in Vermont, the Tierralismo Good Earth Film Tour aims to provide a critical link and foster meaningful learning among leaders of urban agriculture in Cuba with those in the U. S. In the context of Cuba’s move toward a more market-based economic model, the experiences that Ms. Salcines will see firsthand in the U.S.—innovative marketing strategies, cooperative producer and consumer structures, and trans-disciplinary research and education approaches—will provide new tools that can be adapted in a changing Cuba. U.S. citizens, food activists, farmers, professors and policymakers will learn from the Cuban experience, seeing and hearing firsthand the innovative techniques Cuban farmers have devised to produce healthy food under difficult circumstances and with scarce resources. The Tierralismo Good Earth Film Tour will be about sharing experiences and identifying potential collaborations among the multiple actors needed to ensure access to healthy food for all people.Tierralismo Good Earth Film Tour Bio’s:Isis Salcines graduated in 1995 from the Polytecnic Institute “Osvaldo Herrera” with a degree in Telephone Systems and Data. Upon graduation she began working as a long distance operator at the ETECSA (Government telephone company). In 1998, Ms. Salcines was laid off from her job at the ETECSA and began working at the Organoponico Vivero Alamar (Alamar Organic Cooperative). Starting in 2003 she helped design and launch a new food preservation project. In 2007 she enrolled in asix-month course in agricultural studies and in 2008 she began to focus on the marketing and distribution of local organic produce to domestic and international markets. In 2012, she became the Projects Coordinator in the Projects and Investments Office at the Organoponico, and she continues her work in that role to this day. In 2013, Ms. Salcines received an advanced studies degree inAgricultural Engineering. During her time at the cooperative, Ms. Salcines has participated in national and international forums such as TERRA MADRE in Italy (2008 and 2010), the first Urban Agriculture Summit (held in Canada in 2012), and in a series of workshops in Panama about environmental conflicts (2013).Alejandro Ramírez is a Guatemalan photographer and film director who grew up and currently lives in Alamar, Cuba. • 3:00 PM - 7:30 PM THIS EVENT IS IN our SANCTUARY space. PLEASE ENTER ON WALNUT STREET.The event runs 3-7:30pm. You're welcome to come and go as you please, though the piece is best experienced for the entire four hours. Bowerbird Presents GATEMorton Feldman: For Philip Guston (1984)performed by Either/ORRichard Carrick, piano and celesteMargaret Lancaster, flutesDavid Shively, percussion3-7:30pmBowerbird is excited to welcome back NYC based ensemble Either / OR to perform "For Philip Guston", Morton Feldman's late period masterpiece for piano/celesta, flute, and percussion. Upon hearing this expansive 4+ hour work, noted music critic Alex Ross wrote, "What makes "Guston" fundamentally and wondrously beautiful is its harmony. Feldman's whole career was a search for ways to string together lovely chords, and "Guston" contains some of his most lustrous inventions. He is careful to parcel them out economically, so that they arrive as gratifying shocks after stretches of more neutral sound. These islands of beauty are like suggestions of figuration at the center of an abstract painting." This performance will take place in the Rotunda's magnificent domed sanctuary space. Audiences are welcome to come and go as they please - but the work is best experience in its full duration. There will be pews and chairs available for seating, but audiences are encouraged to bring their own blankets and pillows to sit and lay on. Feldman is exceptional for that liminal space between sleep and awake. ABOUT THE ARTISTSSince 2004, Either/Or has been at the forefront of New York's contemporary music scene, programming new and recent works for unconventional ensembles or soloists that are rarely heard elsewhere. Equally informed in American experimentalism and in the European avant-garde, Either/Or collaborates with emerging and established artists from a broad aesthetic spectrum. Performances throughout the Northeast, including Philadelphia Museum of Art, ICA Boston, Miller Theatre, The Kitchen, and venues across NYC, as well as frequent appearances at experimental music venues such as The Stone, Roulette, and ISSUE Project Room. Morton Feldman (1926 - 1987) was an American composer, born in New York City. A major figure in 20th century music, Feldman was a pioneer of indeterminate music, a development associated with the experimental New York School of composers also including John Cage, Christian Wolff, and Earle Brown. Feldman's works are characterized by notational innovations which he developed to create his characteristic sound: rhythms which seem to be free and floating; pitch shadings which seem softly unfocused; a generally quiet and slowly evolving music; recurring asymmetric patterns. His works after 1977, including For Philip Guston explore extremes of duration. As a child he studied piano with Vera Maurina Press, who, according to the composer himself, instilled in him a "vibrant musicality rather than musicianship."Feldman's first composition teachers were Wallingford Riegger, one of the first American followers of Arnold Schoenberg, and Stefan Wolpe. In early 1950's he met John Cage in the lobby of the New York Philharmonic and the two composers quickly became good friends, with Feldman moving into the building Cage lived in. Through Cage, he met painters Richard Lippold (who had a studio next door), Sonia Sekula, Robert Rauschenberg, and Philip Guston. In a lecture to German students the composer remarked, "If you don't have a friend who's a painter, you're in trouble."Admission is FREE.  Audiences are free to come and go as they wish. The event runs 3pm-7:30pm.

  • 7:00 PMPussy Riot: The Movement - Philadelphia Film Premiere (+ Live Music)
  • 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM

The Rotunda and Wooden Shoe Books presents a free screening of the Philly premiere of Pussy Riot: The Movement!

Pussy Riot The Movement chronicles the true life odyssey of the girls who rocked a country and continue to fight for human rights throughout the world. The documentary follows Yekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, the latter two through their harsh two year sentences for playing music calling for freedom. What started as a punk rock collective has catapulted into a world movement for human rights.

The Movie briefly reviews the events that led to the harsh two-year sentences of Pussy Riot members for singing a punk rock song in Moscow's most important cathedral. Their message about the growing repression in Russia by Putin's regime caught the world's attention like no other dissidents before them and turned the avant garde feminist group into a worldwide symbol of freedom. The film goes beyond the trial, to the women's prison experiences.

The film crew is embedded in a violent demonstration that produces stunning footage. Included are exclusive interviews with Katia Samutsevich, the Pussy Riot member who was released, families of the women, famed Russian journalist, Masha Gessen, artists and dissidents. Also included is a trip to the penal colony where Nadia Tolokonnikova served her sentence. Pussy Riot The Movement explores the questions: Where are the freedoms guaranteed in the Russian Constitution? Is Putin writing his own "amendments" to the Constitution? Why doesn't the Constitution work?" Has Pussy Riot had a lasting impact on the fight for freedom in Russia? Can they start a movement?
