Theatre of the Oppressed combines images, sounds, movements and dialogue into ideas and actions for making social change. For 5 weeks this winter, we focus on the topics of race and racism. We aim to create a safe space where participants can speak their own truth and start to do the important work of unlearning the systemic racism we’ve been taught our entire lives. We hope to offer people healing from their racial privileges and oppressions while also giving them a starting point to make the structural and personal changes that can undo racism in ourselves, our communities and our world. Each 2-hour session will mix theatrical games and techniques with discussion supplemented by take-home readings and practical assignments to be enacted in everyday life.
There's a pay-what-you-wish intro class on Monday, January 28th from 7 to 9pm. The series runs the following 5 Mondays (February 4th through March 4th) at the same time. Series participants must be able to attend all 5 weeks, and must pre-register before February 1st by emailing "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Series tuition is sliding scale, $45-$95. Worktrade is available upon request.

And this time they bring their very own cabaret, chock full of toy theatre trickery, duct-taped string and brass music, singing picture shows, and some old wise ventriloquism thrown out for good measure. If you saw them this past December at the Year-End Cabaret, or back in 2011 at Studio 34, or only in your most fanstastical of homemade dreams, then you know that there are few better ways to spend a Tuesday evening. Also, come early to check out the Flying Donkeys' Cheap Art Bazaar and take a piece of the show home with you.
This top-notch group of touring puppeteers (Jason Hicks, Lindsey McCaw, Penelope Hillfraü and Sam Wilson) have over a decade of show-making and scheming under their belts, having all worked independently and with the Bread & Puppet Theater (VT), the Dolly Wagglers (WI), BareBones Productions (MN), Paperhand Puppet Intervention (NC) In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (MN), RPM Puppet Conspiracy (NC, VT), El Circo de Carton (Mexico), Partòt Parata and Fest-Festival (Italy), All the Saints Theatre Company (VA) and Great Small Works (NYC).

Philly Loves Women In Horror is about showcasing their efforts so that other women and men alike are inspired, entertained, and motivated by such a vibrant community. Come join filmmakers, fans, and artists alike for an hour of short films by talented women directors and producers in the horror film industry and an additional hour of getting to know women in horror who work, live, and love right in our city.

This is an official event in conjunction with Women in Horror Recognition Month (WiHM), a month long celebration that happens every February wherein people all over the world create events and projects for charity that promote underrepresented female professionals in the film and art industries including directors, producers, cinematographers, FX Artists, painters, sculptors, and more. Women in Horror Recognition Month is a service provided by the Viscera Organization, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that expands opportunities for contemporary female genre filmmakers.

Through She Shoots Movies, young women will come together to use the power of media to unite, and empower women.
Lil Filmmakers Inc. is a non-profit media and performing arts organization for youth and teens. Since 1999, our organization has been devoted to providing young people access to the resources to create, develop and produce media and movie projects. Our mission is to keep the arts viable in the communities by offering young people the opportunity to create art and give them the outlet to showcase their work. Our students are exposed to 21st century skill sets that will help enhance literacy; strengthen their interpersonal and communication skills; and make them proficient in digital video and computer technology. Lil' Filmmakers' philosophy is to transform our youth into artists and thinkers while nurturing them to become socially responsible community leaders.
Lil Filmmakers founder Janine Spruill is an entrepreneur and artist. A native of Philadelphia, Janine received her BA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. Shortly before graduation, Janine volunteered her time teaching youth in disadvantage communities video arts. Over the years, the video clubs have transformed into a thriving production company where youth have the opportunity to learn how to make movies and create professional projects. Janine continues to volunteer her time mentoring youth in her organization and community.

Featuring our old friends, Tuvan throat singers ALASH, along with some new friends!
ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.
What does throat singing sound like? "Imagine a human bagpipe-a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally-by the same person, at the same time." -Newsweek (March 17, 2006)
Where is Tuva? Tuva (sometimes spelled Tyva) sits at the southern edge of Siberia, with Mongolia to its south. Over the centuries, Tuva has been part of Chinese and Mongolian empires, and shares many cultural ties with Mongolia. In 1944 it became part of the USSR, and until the late physicist Richard Feynman drew attention to it, was largely unknown to westerners. Tuva is now a member of the Russian Federation.

Garth Stevenson is a Brooklyn-based double bassist and film composer. Raised in the mountains of Western Canada, nature became his primary inspiration and the common thread between his life and music. His most recent and critically acclaimed release, Flying, is a seventy-five minute homage to a recent life-changing trip to Antarctica. Of Flying, iTunes praises, “Garth Stevenson joins the likes of Brian Eno and Sigur Rós as a practitioner of this ethereal yet accessible genre.”
Stevenson composed the film scores to: The Red Knot, A Fierce Green Fire, Young Lakota, Elon + Emmanuelle, L’Aubade.
Garth introduced his music to the yoga community at the Wanderlust Festival where he improvised during classes and lead large groups of hikers into the mountains to perform his solo music. He collaborated with teacher Elena Brower for the worlds largest yoga class in Central Park for 13 000 people and for France’s largest yoga gathering in history for over 3000 people in front of the Eiffel Tower.
Stevenson attended the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship and received a degree is Performance and Jazz Composition. He has performed with the world-renowned Alash Ensemble from Tuva, with jazz musicians such as Joe Lovano and George Garzone, in TAQ a Polish improvised music trio, called whales to an ice breaker by imitating their sounds on his bass, and has appeared on David Letterman. Garth has performed throughout Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Antarctica.

Every 3rd Saturday of the month PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their work in a safe, uncensored environment.
Teens who participate in the slams earn points to qualify for the PYPM Slam Team, which competes at annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival and Slam held in various cities across the U.S with over 50 other youth poetry teams from around the world.

Josh Fialkoff has been lending his smoky voice and soulful instrumentals to dance floors since 2006, both as a solo artist, and with a variety of groups near and far. A dancer himself, Josh knows how to create songs that make people want to move.

Theatre of the Oppressed combines images, sounds, movements and dialogue into ideas and actions for making social change. For 5 weeks this winter, we focus on the topics of race and racism. We aim to create a safe space where participants can speak their own truth and start to do the important work of unlearning the systemic racism we’ve been taught our entire lives. We hope to offer people healing from their racial privileges and oppressions while also giving them a starting point to make the structural and personal changes that can undo racism in ourselves, our communities and our world. Each 2-hour session will mix theatrical games and techniques with discussion supplemented by take-home readings and practical assignments to be enacted in everyday life.
There's a pay-what-you-wish intro class on Monday, January 28th from 7 to 9pm. The series runs the following 5 Mondays (February 4th through March 4th) at the same time. Series participants must be able to attend all 5 weeks, and must pre-register before February 1st by emailing "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Series tuition is sliding scale, $45-$95. Worktrade is available upon request.

Established in 1996, The Gathering is the longest/strongest-running truly Hip Hop event in Philly.
The Gathering IS b-boys/b-girls, pop-lockers, emcees, graffiti writers, DJs, men, women, and children of all ages enjoying an organic, community-based celebration of The struggle, the Love, and the culture of Hip Hop.
DJs spin Hiphop, breaks, and funk all night, and there are open cyphas, a tag wall, and a featured performance and graffiti panel each month.
