Ars Nova Workshop
presents
Ches Smith & These Arches
Tim Berne, alto saxophone
Tony Malaby, tenor saxophone
Mary Halvorson, guitar
Andrea Parkins, accordion + electronics
Ches Smith, drums
Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present Ches Smith & These Arches. Led by the drummer Ches Smith, the group includes the saxophonists Tim Berne and Tony Malaby, the guitarist Mary Halvorson and the accordionist Andrea Parkins. About These Arches, The New York Times writes, “The group presents a volatile compound of attributes: deft and boomy, ragged and precise.”
Ches Smith is one of the most versatile drummers working in experimental music today. He has played with Xiu Xiu, John Zorn, Wadada Leo Smith, John Tchicai, Marc Ribot, Iggy Pop, Terry Riley and many others. For These Arches, initially formed as a quartet, Smith united several impressive voices in contemporary jazz and experimental music: the saxophonist Tony Malaby, the guitarist Mary Halvorson and the accordionist Andrea Parkins.
This quartet appears on These Arches’ debut album, Finally Out Of My Hands, released in 2010 on Chris Speed's Skirl label. Since then, Smith has brought the alto saxophonist Tim Berne onboard. The two have worked together in the past, most recently in Berne's group Snakeoil, which released an album in 2012 on ECM. In 2013, this new quintet version of These Arches will release Hammered, which Smith calls “a concise and hard-hitting album that explores collective improvisation in the context of expanded song forms.”
Tonight These Arches will perform pieces from Hammered.

Theatre of the Oppressed combines images, sounds, movements and dialogue into ideas and actions for making social change. For 5 weeks this winter, we focus on the topics of race and racism. We aim to create a safe space where participants can speak their own truth and start to do the important work of unlearning the systemic racism we’ve been taught our entire lives. We hope to offer people healing from their racial privileges and oppressions while also giving them a starting point to make the structural and personal changes that can undo racism in ourselves, our communities and our world. Each 2-hour session will mix theatrical games and techniques with discussion supplemented by take-home readings and practical assignments to be enacted in everyday life.
There's a pay-what-you-wish intro class on Monday, January 28th from 7 to 9pm. The series runs the following 5 Mondays (February 4th through March 4th) at the same time. Series participants must be able to attend all 5 weeks, and must pre-register before February 1st by emailing "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Series tuition is sliding scale, $45-$95. The Barking Spiders: The Barking Spiders are an experimentally punk, vocals and rap - based duo - band from West Philly. The B.S. are made of two teenage, Doctor Who loyal, anti - pop girls: Mahala Katina (drums) and Calamity Rose (guitar and vocals). In a word: awesome.
LACHI: Urb/Pop/Alt songstress Lachi and her stellar band are one of the most critically acclaimed in all of NYC. Lachi has been tearing up the New York City scene with her stirring blend of pop, rock and soul since she hit the stage in 2007. The multi-talented singer/songwriter and performer takes her music to the next level with anthemic tunes, an affirmative celebration of life driven by soaring, instantly catchy hooks. It exhorts listeners to accept others; to live, and to love life. Her eclectic tracks deliver bright pop melodies, driven by phat rock guitar riffs, touches of funk and electro, and a hint of ska which showcase Lachi’s powerful vocals.
Bianca Boom: Influenced by female artists like Odetta, Joni Mitchell, and Amy Winehouse, Bianca Boom puts her own take on acoustics. A player of strings and electric things, her favorite color is Blue. Counting rap as a form of folk music, she's sure to give you a different take on the world. Letting her eclectic heritage guide music from the Soul. In 2013, she brings to bear a sound that takes you through the stories of her many travels through the US and the World in the spirit of Reggae, Blues, Folk, and Hip-Hop. Having most recently been brought into the Boom One Records family, a North Carolina based label specializing in Reggae and Electronic music, we are sure to hear more releases of her haunting vocals in the near future.

Bowerbird
Presents
GATE
This month:
CHRONOPOLIS
and other experimental animated films, 1961-1982
Curated by Thomas Patteson.
Join us for an event that includes a screening of Chronopolis, a 1982 animated masterpiece by Polish filmmaker Piotr Kamler with soundtrack by French musique concréte pioneer Luc Ferrari. The evening will also present a cross-section of experimental animation from the ‘Space Age’.
Beautifully executed in a muted color palette of tans, blues, yellow-ochers, clay-reds, violets, and creamy-whites, Chronopolis tells the story of a gargantuan city lurking in the sky colonized by powerful immortals who have become jaded with eternal life. Most of their time is spent monotonously constructing bizarre and unusual objects while waiting for the ultimate gift to arrive in their hands. With ziggurat formations, bas-relief sculptures, magical glyphs, archaic languages, and engravings by dying gods, the visual language of Chronopolis strongly evokes the feel of an archeological odyssey of a far of planet. Often labeled as science fiction, Kamler’s works explore the inner depths of imagination as much as the far reaches of outer space, eschewing linear narratives for dynamic, hallucinatory symbolism rendered in everything from clay to ink, paper cut-outs, early CGI and even pinboard animation.

Philadelphia Theatre of the Oppressed presents Rainbow of Desire
Rehearse reality in this one-day workshop: The Rainbow of Desire uses a group process to take ideas out of our heads and put them onstage. In the morning we'll loosen up the body and enliven the senses with warm-ups and games that help develop a theatrical vocabulary. After lunch, we dive into the Rainbow of Desire technique by performing our own stories in order to take them apart and put them back together in new and different ways. By animating the invisible elements of our psyches, we can see what forces inside our own minds are blocking us, as well as what can help us. The entire group supports each other to find true transformation.
Workshop runs from 10am-4pm (there will be a 50-minute lunch break around noon). To attend, pre-register with an email to "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Tuition is sliding scale $15-$45. No prior theatre experience necessary.
6:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Doors and meal at 6pm, movie at 6:30pm, discussion to follow
Every year there are more than 400,000 American children who are torn away from their friends, schools and homes to pick the food we all eat. Zulema, Perla and Victor labor as migrant farm workers, sacrificing their own childhoods to help their families survive. THE HARVEST/LA COSECHA profiles these three as they journey from the scorching heat of Texas’ onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards and back south to the humidity of Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest.
From the Producers of the Academy-Award® Nominated film, WAR/DANCE and Executive Producer Eva Longoria, this award-winning documentary provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of these children who struggle to dream while working 12 – 14 hours a day, 7 days a week to feed America.

thirtynothing
Written and Performed by Dan Fishback
Co-sponsored by: Gender, Sexuality & Women's Studies at Penn, Penn Theater Arts Program, Kelly Writers House, Penn LGBT Center, QPenn, and The Rotunda
Dan Fishback is as old as AIDS. In his acclaimed, moving and quirky solo performance, thirtynothing, Fishback juxtaposes tales from the terrifying dawn of the AIDS epidemic with stories from his own more innocent childhood in those same years. As he unearths forgotten work by gay artists who died in the 80s and 90s, Fishback weaves stories from his own life through stories from theirs. Searching for role models and father figures amongst artists like Mark Morrisroe, David Wojnarowicz, David B. Feinberg, Essex Hemphill and many more, Fishback interacts with their work, dramatizing the generation gap between older and younger gay men. With insight, wit, and his characteristic dark, neurotic humor, Fishback tears open issues of sexual intimacy, mass death and cultural memory, creating an abstract theatrical landscape where the living and the dead can co-mingle and collaborate. thirtynothing premiered at Dixon Place in New York City in 2011; Fishback is currently adapting it into book form as part of the ArtsEdge Residency at the University of Pennsylvania.
Trailer for thirtynothing:

Press:
"Dan Fishback seems so much like a nerdy close friend... that audience members, whom Fishback occasionally engages in conversation, have to restrain themselves from responding." - THE NEW YORKER
"Fishback has a Kushnerian sense for the complexities of historical memory." - THE VILLAGE VOICE
"thirtynothing is essential as a memorial, ensuring the younger gay community learns its own history and the bold legacy of those they never knew." - FLAVORPILL
"Since I moved to NYC, I can't tell you how many times I've heard about the Dan Fishback 'experience,' and now, having experienced it first hand, it's sort of like the Beyonce experience. Except, with Dan, neuroses replace the wigs, glitz and glamour." - GAYLETTER
"thirtynothing is one of the most powerful performance pieces I have ever seen." - KIMYA DAWSON
Biography:
Dan Fishback has been writing and performing in New York City since 2003. Major works include The Material World (2012), thirtynothing (2011) and You Will Experience Silence (2009), all directed by Stephen Brackett at Dixon Place. Time Out New York called The Material World "the best downtown musical" in years, and named it one of the top ten plays of 2013. Fishback has received grants from the Franklin Furnace Fund (2010) and the Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists (2007-2009). He is a resident artist at the Hemispheric Institute for Performance & Politics at NYU (2012), and has enjoyed previous residencies at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange (2010-2012), Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony. Previous works include No Direction Homo (P.S. 122, 2006), Please Let Me Love You (Dixon Place, 2006),Waiting for Barbara(Galapagos Art Space, 2006), boi with an i (Collective: Unconscious, 2004), and Assholes Speak Louder Than Words (Sidewalk Cafe, 2004). Fishback curates and hosts the queer theater series La MaMa's SQUIRTS.
Also a performing songwriter, Fishback began his music career in West Philadelphia before migrating to the East Village's anti-folk scene. His band, Cheese On Bread, has toured Europe and North America in support of their two full-length albums, "Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby" (2004) and "The Search for Colonel Mustard" (2007), the latter of which was re-issued in Japan in 2010 on Moor Works Records. As a solo artist, Fishback has released several recordings, including "Sweet Chastity" (2005, produced by César Alvarez of The Lisps), and his latest, "The Mammal Years" (2012). He was a member of the movement troupe Underthrust, which collaborated with songwriter Kimya Dawson on several performances and videos. Fishback's essay, "Times Are Changing, Reb Tevye," was featured in the anthology "Mentsh: On Being Jewish & Queer" (Alyson Books, 2004). His visual installation, "Pen Pals," was featured in the 2011 Soho exhibition of the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History, for which he later served on the Selection Committee. Fishback frequently teaches workshops on performance composition and queer performance culture. He blogs at thematerialworld.tumblr.com, and his real website is www.danfishback.com

The Red Masque's CD Release Party at The Rotunda
The show is Free but donations are encouraged.
Philadelphia’s The Red Masque have been playing their dark and incendiary brand of music since 2001. Part art, part alchemy, the group's experimental songwriting style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space rock improvisations, intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics and chunky riffs. Unconventional and eccentric in musical form, the sophisticatedly sinister The Red Masque fuses together such disparate musical references as horror movie soundtracks, rock-in-opposition, progressive rock, experimental, zeuhl, heavy rock and metal, gothic, psychedelia, space rock, and kraut rock.
The show at The Rotunda is the CD release show for their latest album, Mythalogue, released on the experimental music label Beta-lactam Ring Records (Oregon). Funded entirely through a spring 2012 Kickstarter campaign, Mythalogue was recorded at Orion Sound Studios in Baltimore by Engineer Mike Potter and mixed by acclaimed producer and progressive rock musician Bob Drake in France. The Red Masque’s show at the Rotunda will feature songs off of Mythalogue as well as some material off of previous records. In addition, after the musical performance, The Red Masque’s Brandon Lord Ross and Steve Craig (who have been working with film) will be showing a few experimental and horror shorts, videos and trailers.
The Red Masque Lineup:
Lynnette Shelley: vocals and percussion;
Brandon Lord Ross: bass, keys;
Nicholas Giannetti: guitars;
Steve Craig: drums
Radio Eris
Philadelphia’s “post-everything band” Radio Eris will be opening the show. Being versatile and experimental, Radio Eris has myriad influences but no obvious genre. Performances have ranged from ambient and mellow to punk-rock loud. Sometimes spoken-word, sometimes a psychedelic punk band, sometimes a free-rock improv noise throw-down…sometimes a little of each all in the same set.
Founded in 1999 by Lora Bloom and Matt Stevenson, the thriving band of veteran cozmik rockers features Dan "Redbeard" Baker on guitar, and the mysterious Kenny on synthesizers and noise. Radio Eris will be performing with guest drummer Ed Wilcox from Temple of Bon Matin. The band has released 5 albums, run out of gas on the A-4 in eastern France, bought a house, hung out with members of Hawkwind, toured the South in a midnight-blue van in August, and had any number of other adventures across the last decade.

Featuring interviews with leading medical experts from around the world discussing natural approaches to preventing and reversing chronic illnesses.
"Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food" - Hippocrates. That is the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial new documentary film Food Matters from Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch.
With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what's wrong with our malnourished bodies, it's no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. Food Matters sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide 'sickness industry' and gives people some scientifically verifiable solutions for overcoming illness naturally.
"With access to better information people invariably make better choices for their health..."
In what promises to be the most contentious idea put forward, the filmmakers have interviewed several leading experts in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.
The focus of the film is in helping us rethink the belief systems fed to us by our modern medical and health care establishments. The interviewees point out that not every problem requires costly, major medical attention and reveal many alternative therapies that can be more effective, more economical, less harmful and less invasive than conventional medical treatments.
The ‘Food Matters' duo have independently funded the film from start to finish in order to remain as unbiased as possible, delivering a clear and concise message to the world. Food Matters.

Featuring Ana Edwards, who was in the West African country in January when U.S.-backed French forces intervened. Edwards, host of the weekly DefendersLIVE! Radio Program on WRIR, is also the president of Virginia Friends of Mali. This was her third visit to the former French colony, one of the poorest countries in the world, but one with great geo-political value to the U.S. military.
Ana Edwards is a founding member of the Defenders for Freedom, Justice and Equality. The Virginia Defender newspaper was launched in 2005 along with DefendersLIVE radio program to be community voices of the struggle to reclaim Richmond's African Burial Ground. Both vehicles serve to identify and explore the connections between local, national, and international social justice concerns.

After a tiny apartment show and then a bigger and wilder house concert, this cumbia-driven accordion, horn and percussion ensemble makes it big at The Rotunda on a Saturday night!
Lungs Face Feet is an 8 piece brass, accordian, percussion band from Pittsburgh, PA that began in 2010 with friends from Mexico playing raw cumbia. We have since been pursuing our own blend of energetic sounds influenced by cumbia, oddities, cooked and uncooked fish and whatever keeps us honest. We play inside, outside, on the street and wherever people gather to enjoy their community. We perform, write and collaborate striving to make the music living, inclusive and true to our feelings as working people.
More details soon to come!
