  • 8:00 PMUniversal Indians with Joe McPhee pres. by Ars Nova Workshop
  • 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

    Ars Nova Workshop

    presents

    Universal Indians with Joe McPhee

Joe McPhee, pocket trumpet + alto saxophone

    John Dikeman, saxophones

    Jon Rune Strøm, double-bass

    Tollef Østvang, drums

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the explosive Amsterdam-based free jazz trio Universal Indians along with their special guest, veteran improviser Joe McPhee.

American-born saxophonist John Dikeman formed Universal Indians with the Norwegian rhythm section of bassist Jon Rune Strøm and drummer Tollef Østvang. The three draw inspiration from American and European free jazz pioneers from Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler to Peter Brötzmann and Evan Parker, while adding new twists of their own. The trio invited multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee to join them on the road in 2014, resulting in the unpredictable, inventive CD Skullduggery (Clean Feed). The live album features four extended excursions spotlighting the group’s taut interplay and constantly surprising sonic palette.

Derek Taylor of Dusted Magazine praised the album’s “raw and raucous joys,” hailing the fact that “Though formed on the fly, the melodic integrity of these exchanges holds up to heavy scrutiny.”

Born in Nebraska and raised in Wyoming, saxophonist John Dikeman left the relative isolation of his home behind in pursuit of creative music, which he explored through stints in Philly, New York, Cairo and Budapest before settling in Amsterdam nearly a decade ago, since performing with all of the major figures of the Dutch jazz scene. That includes the Norwegian rhythm duo of bassist Jon Rune Strøm and drummer Tollef Østvang, who also run the label Stone Floor Records and work together in the groups All Included and Friends and Neighbors. Joe McPhee has been a singular voice in creative jazz and new music since his emergence in the 1960s, working with a who’s who of artists including Brötzmann, Parker, Pauline Oliveros, Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson.

  • 8:00 PMFire Museum pres. Susan Alcorn, Evan Lipson, Eric Carbonara
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Fire Museum presents :Susan AlcornEvan LipsonEric CarbonaraSusan Alcorn: One of the world's premiere musical innovators of her instrument, Baltimore-based Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Known among steel guitarists for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Alcorn first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands. Soon she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of modern classical music (Messiaen, Varese, Penderecki), the deep listening of Pauline Oliveros, Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango, free jazz, and world musics (Indian rags, South American songs, and gamelan orchestra). Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression. "From the relatively unadorned sound of pedal steel and amplifier, Susan Alcorn brings forth music that is as full of emotional honesty as it is of melodic and harmonic exploration and surprise. She possesses a virtuosic technique that is always at the service of the musical moment and its possibilities for expression and communication." - Kevin Macneil Brown/DustedSusan will perform a solo set then a duo set with Evan LipsonEvan Lipson has operated as a musician since adolescence-intuitively seeking the liminal zones in which intellect and instinct, history and myth, and creative and destructive force intersect. Drawn towards aberrant perspectives at an early age, his formative experiences were primarily rooted in extreme and often discordant forms of rock, improvised music, modernist composition, jazz, outsider pop, soundtracks, and noise.Eric Carbonara (Philadelphia):  is a guitarist, composer, and audio engineer currently based in Philadelphia. His reverence for raw and honest aural expression has led him far and wide, composing works that embrace noise, improvisation, and aleatoric elements for the guitar. Carbonara's work stems from the belief that music is a vehicle for self expression and universal truth, a belief shared by his teacher, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya. His playing weaves a variety of traditional forms producing a kind of exalted pidgin style in which one can recognize influences of Hindustani slide guitar music, Andalusian Roma-Flamenco, and 20th-century guitar compositions yet find it difficult to pinpoint any singular derivative source. Carbonara has released 7 solo/duet albums and has been featured on many compilations from labels including VHF, Locust Music, Tompkins Square, and Majumua Music, among others. In March of 2014, Carbonara released Tributes and Diatribes with harpist Jesse Sparhawk on VHF Records.Carbonara's strengths lie in blending and juxtaposing seemingly polarized themes, revealing a more honest and thorough depiction of himself. Marc Masters in Pitchfork writes "His guitar often sounds idyllic but also filled with tension; his careful picks and strums could easily dive into darkness. Such countering themes are a product of Carbonara's approach to guitar, which is guided equally by physical technique and abstract imagery."Carbonara has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe alongside fellow guitarists such as Alexander Turnquist (VHF), Nick Schillace, William Tyler (MERGE), and Nick Millevoi (TZADIK). When not working in the studio as an engineer/producer, he is at work composing and extending his technique and abilities. Carbonara has been featured in Pitchfork, Washington Post, Chicago Reader, Philly Weekly, etc. and has performed live on WNYC's "Spinning on Air", WFMU, WPRB, WPSU, WNUR, among many other radio programs.links at http://www.museumfire.com/eventsAdmission is FREE but donations are gladly accepted!

  • 8:00 PMBowerbird pres. Philadelphia record release of Bombogenic, by Sonic Liberation 8 with the The Classical Revolution Trio & Oliver Lake
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Bowerbird is excited to present the Philadelphia record release celebration of Bombogenic, a new album by Sonic Liberation 8 with the The Classical Revolution Trio & Oliver Lake. The album celebrates the 15 year anniversary of Sonic Liberation 8 with a new collection of compositions and arrangements showcasing a unique confluence of loft jazz, Afro Cuban Yoruba music, and new chamber music. Joining SL8 in this milestone is special guest artist Oliver Lake (World Saxophone Quartet) and the Classical Revolution String Trio. In addition to five new compositions, Kevin Diehl, the octet's leader, arranged the Erik Satie composition, Gnossienne, recasting it as a platform for creative interaction rooted in these genres. Additionally Oliver Lake composed 2 compositions for specifically for SL8's Afro-Cuban-Yoruba jazz format. Diehl arranged bata drums parts for these 2 pieces along with another of Mr. Lakes compositions called Love Like Sisters. Love Like Sisters originally appeared on a World Saxophone Quartet album called Metamorphosis. THE PERFORMERSSpecial Guest Oliver Lake - Alto Saxophone, Composition Sonic Liberation 8 Kevin Diehl - Drumkit, Bata Iya, Composer Matt Engle - Bass, Composer Elliot Levin - Woodwinds Veronica Jurkiewicz - Viola, String Section Leader Mike Watson - Bass Clarinet Nichola Rivera - Bata Itotele & Iya, Conga, Composer Tom Lowery - Drumkit, Afro Brazilian Percussion Ron Howerton - Bata Okonkolo, Conga, Percussion The Classical Revolution Trio Russel Kotcher - Violin Peter Oswald - Cello Yoni Draiblate - Cello ABOUT THE ARTISTSThe artistic scope of renowned saxophonist, composer, painter, and poet Oliver Lake's half-century-long career is unparalleled. An extensive resume of his collaborations includes work with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Flux String Quartet, Bjork, Lou Reed, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Anthony Braxton, James Blood Ulmer, William Parker, Vijay Iyer, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille and a veritable who's who of the jazz vanguard. Oliver's efforts extend far beyond the music, with his creation of the non-profit Passin' Thru organization, becoming a mainstay at Pittsburgh's City of Asylum, publishing two books of poetry and frequently producing visual artwork for exhibitions across the country. Lake's breadth of disciplines can be traced back to his formative years with the Black Artists Group, the innovative St. Louis collective of musicians, poets, dancers and painters he helped architect over 35 years ago. As a co-founder of the internationally acclaimed World Saxophone Quartet (with fellow luminaries David Murray, Julius Hemphill and Hamiet Bluiett), Oliver firmly established himself in the "Loft" jazz scene of the 1970's in New York City, and has since produced a body of work that is both expansive and versatile enough to avoid falling solely into the trappings of the "avant-garde" and "free" labels. The fact that his work can stand on compositional merit alone, all while he has etched a place for himself as one of the elite saxophone players and improvisers of recent times, is a testament to Oliver Lake's stature as an artist. Lake's output as an exacting and unequivocally original composer has long been celebrated, highlighted by commissions awarded from the Library of Congress, the Rockefeller Foundation ASCAP, the International Association for Jazz Education, Composers Forum and the McKim Foundation. He has been the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and was also presented with the Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award at the Kennedy Center in 2006. In 2014, Oliver was honored with what is arguably the greatest recognition of his artistry and vision to date, becoming one of only nineteen grantees appointed for the prestigious Doris Duke Artist Award, a multi-year grant awarded to American artists in the fields of jazz, theater and dance. A trailblazer through and through, Oliver Lake continues to produce in the vociferous, uncompromising way he only knows how to, currently immersed in the work of such adventurous ensembles as the Oliver Lake Organ Quartet, Oliver Lake Big Band and Trio 3. Sonic Liberation 8 is deeply rooted in the traditions of Afro Cuban music and has spent years fusing that grand tradition with new sounds including composed jazz, modern chamber composition, and the powerful Orisha spirit. Sonic Liberation 8 melds together sounds and time periods in a manner like no other band around today. As Sonic Liberation Front, this ensemble has consistently won international critical acclaim and have been named #1 or Top 10 by the Village Voice, All About Jazz, Jazziz, and more. The band has recorded five internationally-distributed albums. The eight-member ensemble has played extensively in the Philadelphia and New York area, and at festivals and cultural institutions throughout the Midwest U.S. and Canada. The core octet is scalable, often collaborating with guest artists and expanded ensembles.More info: http://www.bowerbird.org/newsite/events/160616/Admission is FREE

  • 8:00 PMThe Music of Moon Dog with the Arcana New Music Ensemble
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM ABOUT THE EVENTBowerbird is pleased to present "The Music of Moondog", a survey of the idiosyncratic rounds and songs by composer Louis Thomas Hardin Jr (1916 - 1999). The eccentric street musician known as Moondog dressed in Viking garb and regularly performed on the sidewalks of New York's Sixth Avenue. This concert is the debut performance of the Arcana New Music Ensemble. ARCANA NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLEKatie Ambacher, fluteNicholas McNamara, alto saxophoneAaron Stewart, tenor saxophoneMark Zelesky, baritone saxophoneTessa Ellis, trumpetElizabeth Huston, harpEric Derr, percussionAndy Thierauf, percussionJune Bender, violinJoshua Machiz, double bassTHE COMPOSERLouis Thomas Hardin, Jr., better known as Moondog, is one of the most famous and influential outsider musicians of the twentieth century. Born in Kansas to a devoutly religious family, Hardin was blinded at age 16 when he dug up a live dynamite cap. For 30 years, from the early 1940s to the early 1970s, he lived in New York City, where he became a well-known street performer known, thanks to his Nordic garb, as "the Viking of Sixth Avenue." During this time he recorded several albums and won the respect of many important musicians, including Leonard Bernstein, Charlie Parker (for whom he wrote the piece "Bird's Lament"), and Philip Glass (with whom he briefly shared an apartment). From 1974 until his death in 1999, Moondog lived primarily in Germany, where he enjoyed the most stable and productive creative period of his life. Celebrated for his diverse body of work that combines-- among other influences-- the rhythmic energy of jazz, the ritualistic intensity of Native American tribal music, and classical principles of counterpoint, Moondog's music is at once uncategorizable and instantly identifiable. ABOUT ARCANAFounded in 2016, the Arcana New Music Ensemble is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians dedicated to presenting interesting, beautiful, and unconventional music in interesting, beautiful, and unconventional places. Built on a flexible roster of 25 musicians, Arcana is able to perform a broad range of repertoire in numerous configurations. • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM The 40th Street Summer Series—co-produced by Penn, University City District, and The Rotunda—will once again enliven the green area behind the Walnut Street Library (40th Street between Walnut and Locust) with free monthly concerts. This year the programming will run from June through September, with performances on four Saturdays throughout the summer, falling on June 18th, July 23rd, August 20th, and September 17th. These events will only be cancelled is there is really bad weather. A sprinkle won't cancel our fun!  In the past, the Summer Series has featured internationally-acclaimed acts such as the Millennial Territory Orchestra, Man Man, and the Sun Ra Arkestra— to play free outdoor concerts that capture the soul of the neighborhood. This year, the series will run from June through September. The Summer Series brings business during the typically slow summer months by increasing patronage at nearby retailers and building upon the existing vibrancy of 40th Street, while providing entertaining, enriching and safe outlets for families, visitors and students. 2016 ScheduleSATURDAY, JUNE 18 • 6PMThe Young PhiladelphiansThe Young Philadelphians blend mind-blowing harmolodic punk-funk and the sweet, optimistic pulse of 1970s Philly soul.
