Hopalong Horus Heisenberg, Guitar Pilots, Ombient

Hopalong Horus Heisenberg is Bruce Leitch, He's been experimenting with electronic music since 2010. Before that played bass and guitar in various bands. Most of his music is recorded with various virtual instruments on iPad apps, with occasional live bass and guitar. His music ranges from ambient and spacey to droning noise, with the occasional psychedelic or post rock guitars. He has 10 full length digital releases. He has 5 releases on the Belgian Net Label God Hates God. 

Guitar Pilots is an electronic space music duo featuring guitarists Art Cohen and Scott Watkins. Their music consists of long structured improvisational pieces which transport the listener to the depths of space while focusing on each precious unfolding moment. Art's sequencer-like echoed guitar figures provide rhythmic propulsion while Scott's synthetic pads and sub-octave rumblings build a foundation for both guitarists to soar in melodic flights. Singing glissando blends seamlessly with plucks and twangs and blasts of interstellar beam. Following the trail blazed by Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, and the Berlin School, Guitar Pilots carve out their own unique sonic territory that is both organic as the ground underneath and as far-reaching as a distant pulsar.Art Cohen has been a fixture in the Philadelphia music scene for over 30 years as both a performer and an audio engineer. Fluent in guitar, bass, keyboards and harmonica, he has performed at concert venues and radio studios throughout the Delaware Valley and brought his music to Toronto, New York and other cities in the Northeast. He has released CD's with The Ministry of Inside Things, Delicate Monster, CubiZm, Lessick & Lincoln & Cohen, Waves of Violet, Men from When, and as a solo artist. His music ranges from electronic space to ambient to folk-rock to psychedelic rock to traditional folk to experimental to spoken word and beyond - sometimes within the same performance. Art has cultivated a unique guitar style drawing on influences including Garcia, Gilmour, Hendrix, Gottsching, Fripp, and Pinhas. Scott Watkins is best known as the guitar half of Orbital Decay, the Philadelphia area synth & guitar duo who over the past couple of decades have graced the stages of all the region's important electronic space music venues. He coaxes an extended pallet of sounds from his guitar through the use of synths and modelling processors. He has built many of his own instruments including an other-worldly sounding 12-foot beam. Echoes of Gilmour, Hendrix and Froese can be heard in Scott's textural and melodic playing.

Ombient (a conjunction of the Hindu Mantra "Om" and the word Ambient) is the moniker under which Mike Hunter performs his Ambient/Drone/Berlin School/Experimental music. Ombient's music, being of a live and improvisational nature, is representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer. Ombient users various vintage and contemporary analog synthesizers, a large Synthesizers.com modular, and occasionally computers running Ableton Live with various synth plug-in's.  Mike is also host of the radio program Music With Space on WPRB 103.3FM, which focuses on the kinds of music one might here at the Even Horizon Concert Series.

Originally from Detroit, Marsh arrived in the Bay Area in 2000 after ten years in Chicago where he played with most of the avant improvisers in that rich and varied scene. Since his arrival on the west coast, multi-instrumentalist and composer Marsh has been busy with several projects. He currently leads or directs String Theory, a string ensemble focusing on textures and microtonics; the Che Guevarra Memorial Marching (and Stationary) Accordion Band, structured and free improv for six to fifteen accordions; Robot Martians, electronics and processed voice; the Out of the Blue Chamber Ensemble, a mixture of reeds and strings; Opera Viva, voiced physical theater; the Quintessentials, a quintet specializing in interpreting graphic compositions based on alterations to the Michelin Road Guide to France; and the Illuminated Orchestra, structured improves for large ensemble. Additionally Marsh is a member of Romus/Diaz-Infante's Abstractions, Jim Ryan's Left Coast Improv Group, Moe! Staiano's Moe!chestra and Tom Bickley's Cornelius Cardew Choir. Bob Marsh tours frequently with his long term partner saxophonist Jack Wright. Bob has recently been presenting a solo work involving violin, voice and tap shoes. Marsh's educational background includes a BFA in sculpture and an MA in humanistic clinical psychology. He has studied classical piano, classical guitar and vibraphone and has taught himself various other instruments. He currently is active with cello, accordion, violin, voice, vibraphone and electronics. Bob recently relocated to Boulder, Colorado

As a veteran of the great orchestras of the golden age of Guinean dance bands, Mamady is a living library of musical science inherited from his ancestors and from a half century of experience as an arranger, band leader, accompanist and soloist. Mamady Kouyate carried this heritage with him to New York where he has collaborated with members of the West African diaspora and Western musicians to continue the great tradition and sound of Guinean Afro-jazz."The music of the Mandingo Ambassadors has been structured to make you feel good. It puts dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system: a locked drum groove, much of it played on high-hat cymbal and drum rims; soft bass lines that fall short or start late, or leave gaps in a run of notes; fingerpicked rhythm guitar notes like clear fizz. (...)The friction between the elder Mr. Kouyate and the rhythm guitarist Mamady Kourouma, their phrases running together and pulling apart, drove the band. Laurie Amat (Providence, RI): Laurie Amat is an acclaimed vocalist, improvisational performer, experimental composer and teacher. Her approach to singing is informed by broad experience including pop, rock, traditional and inventive opera, spoken word, video, dance, theatre and performance art. Ms. Amat's talent for inspiring upcoming vocalists and other artists stems from her focus on the power of the voice as an instrument to convey a pure expression of direct human emotions and story through technique, raw talent and experimentation. She has performed pure-voice, site-specific resonant space pieces internationally in such traditional venues as concert halls, museums and galleries, cathedrals and alternative spaces including castles, bunkers, cisterns, rivers and concrete overpasses. She is also well known for her solo and collaborative performances throughout Europe, including projects with The Residents, Czech scholar/keyboardist Mirek Vodrazka and many others. Her recording and performance techniques have expanded to use electronic devices as sound-altering instruments. The resulting electronic manipulation and looping of vocal sounds support the emotional element and enhances improvised solo and ensemble works.Anais Maviel & My Le Chabert (NYC): Vocalist Anais Maviel has been an exciting and unique new presence on the Brooklyn/New York scene over the past few years. Since arriving, her fearless approach to performance has made her an in-demand musician in a number of innovative ensembles, most notably William Parker's Martin Luther King Project, Parker's Plaza Band, Dave Ruder's The Gentleman Rests, Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson's A Mother's Lament, Matt Lavelle's 12 Houses, Patrick Breiner's Red Metal, and a number of other groups. Maviel's early experiences on stage with her Haitian mother Joyshanti provided her first taste of music's transformative power. She studied vocal jazz and Brazilian percussion in Paris and then deepened her learning through travels in Haiti. Encouraged by mentors Nicole Mitchell, Jen Shyu, and Ernest Dawkins, she first came to New York to study with Kris Davis, Gerald Cleaver and Tony Malaby, among others. A graduate of Paris Diderot University in Aesthetics, her research focused on creative music as Utopian alternative politics for social change. She is on tour promoting her solo voice & percussion release 'hOULe' (Gold Bolus) in collaboration with visual artist My Le Chabert - Cisco Bradley/Jazz Right NowNadia Botello (Philadelphia): Nadia Botello (b. 1986) is sound artist, experimental composer, and sound designer. Her work examines deep listening practices as a method of improvisation, composition, and a means in which to engage and interact with audiences and spaces. She primarily explores the boundaries between three-dimensional spatialisation, aural sculpture, the articulation of site and space, and physical listening experiences. She has composed for dance, film, pinball, experimental opera, iPhones, plants, bodies, architecture, underwater installations, and more. Her full-length debut, Saint She, was featured and archived by MoMA P.S.1's Clocktower. Fire Museum Presents :Chris Corsano/Paul Flaherty duoNick Millevoi's Bug OutPaul Flaherty/Chris Corsano duo: Alto and tenor saxophonist Paul Flaherty is New England's purveyor of the ecstatic jazz pulse. Even before his 1978 debut Flaherty remained unshakable in the pursuit of soul healing and demon dashing through freedom music. That first record, In the Midst of Chaos was cut with his local clan, under the banner Orange. For the next 20 years Flaherty remained exclusively in the great North East and recording over a dozen blasting, freely improvised albums with drummer Randall Colbourne, and others, for Cadence and their own Zaabway imprint. Wet Paint is Flaherty's current imprint for the occasional self-release. Since 2001 Flaherty's notoriety has risen in tandem with his hyper-acclaimed duo with drummer Chris Corsano and regular group work with Dream/Aktion Unit (with Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore), Cold Bleak Heat (with Greg Kelley and Matt Heyner), Spencer Yeh, Dredd Foole, Joe McPhee, Steve Baczkowski, Marc Edwards, and many others. First spellbound by freely improvised music in the mid-1990s after witnessing performances by TEST, William Parker, Cecil Taylor, and others, Chris Corsano began a long-standing, high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998. A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop an expanded solo music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, and other everyday household items into his drum kit. In February 2006 he released his first solo recording,The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, and Japan. He spent 2007 and '08 as the drummer on Bjork's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, and C. Spencer Yeh. Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, most notably a duo with Michael Flower, Rangda (with Sir Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and solo work, now revamped to include synthesizers and contact microphones in addition to his drum set and home-made acoustic instruments.In addition to the those mentioned above, he's also worked with, among others: John Edwards (released by: Clean Feed/Dancing Wayang), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City/Family Vineyard), Paul Dunmall (ESP-Disk), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Jandek (Corwood), Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand), MV&EE (Eclipse/Time-Lag), Vampire Belt (Open Mouth), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), and Wally Shoup (Leo/Columbia Japan). "Flaherty and his saxophones are a subterranean legend in the kingdoms of the north. As an intrepid composer, Millevoi confronts everything from maximal electric power trio music to chamber music to large scale improvisation-heavy ensemble pieces, and everything in between. Nick Millevoi's Bug Out is a structured blast of high energy free jazz straight from all parts of Philadelphia. Elliott Levin: Peace, Poetry & Music

Elliott Levin is a Philadelphia born and based poet and musician. He studied musical and literary composition at the University of Oregon. He has done further studies with Michael Guerra of the Phila. Orchestra; Cecil Taylor, pianist, composer, poet; Claire Polin, flutist composer; and Odean Pope, saxophonist, composer. Elliott has performed throughout the world with such groups as the Cecil Taylor Ensemble, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, New Ghost, Interplay, Talking Free Be-Bop, Odean Pope's Saxophone Choir, Don Preston's Akashic Ensemble, Cee-Knowledge & The Cosmic Funk Orchestra, Alan Silva's Sound Vision Orchestra. He has collaborated in performance with many poets including Miguel Algarin, Bob Holman, Gloria Tropp, Reg. E. Gaines, John Sinclair, Butch Morris' CHORUS OF POETS, Wil Perkins, Frank Messina and David Amram. His original music and poetry can be found on the recordings: OLDUVAI MUSIC ("Or-Om-You'll-Us" 1978), and ILTAR ("Ewe-Doh-Noh-What-Fo'-Kiss" 1979), on TIWA Records. He was the associate producer, composer, and performer for the compilations: POETRY IN PHILADELPHIA (1989), and MUSIC FROM PHILADELPHIA (1990). As producer, composer, performer, in 1990 and 1992, he created two internationally broadcast features for New American Radio.

In 1993 "Whose Myth...?" was used as the title and as the featured work in a multi-disciplinary event sponsored by The Watts Towers Cultural Center in LA. "Huan" is a poetic/musical duet performed and recorded at The Berlin Total Music Meeting with Cecil Taylor in 1996. "A Bleak, Stark Beauty", and "Northern Liberties" were performed and recorded for The Fire In The Valley Festival in Amherst, Mass. with The Jackson Krall Quintet (1996). THE MOTION OF EMOTION CD was released by the Elliott Levin Quartet in 1998 on CIMP, followed by A FINE INTENSITY, SOUL-ETUDE, ON IN ONONDAGA (Opportunities and Advantages). NEW GHOST: LIVE UPSTAIRS AT NICK'S was released by ESP-Disk in 2006. His first book of poetry, "does it swing?" was published in 1996 by Heat Press of LA. Elliott Levin's musical and poetic inspirations are drawn form the roots of American forms of jazz and blues (along with many other international, cultural, folk, and classical forms) to grow into the more expansive techniques of the extended compositional and improvisational directions of modern innovators such as Cecil Taylor, Sun RA, Frank Zappa, and Don Van Vliet, to cite a few sources of inspiration. For the past 25 years, he has been intimately involved in the integral interplay of the language of music, and the music of language.

Join us as we "Watch and Learn" about how 1 voice can make a valuable difference in our World and Environment.  We will explore Science ideas like Endangered Species, Habitat Destruction and Caring for Mother Nature.. Students ( Grade 4-6) will take part in a Science Activity after the Movie, involving:

Light healthy snacks will be provided to temporarily fill those hungry. bellies after school. Each student participant will take home their plant with a plan to save their world !!! :)

ABOUT THE SHOWFLESHFIRE is a multimedia performance piece based on the newly revised and augmented text of the widely acclaimed love poetry of Lili Bita, which has been published in book form in its third edition by Somerset Hall Press of Massachusetts.  The performance includes selected poems accompanied by music, dance, and choreographed movements. This mix of genres will express the myriad experiences of love and Eros available to adults of all ages, affinities, and gender identities.

WHY FLESHFIREThe ancient Greeks conceived of Eros as the most vital, creative, and liberating force in human affairs, the source of energy, fertility, enrichment, and joy.  They conceived it as a great force for good, but also as a power to be treated with attention, respect, and ceremonial worship.  We have, in our fragmented society, few opportunities to celebrate this great power and to attune ourselves to its enormous creative possibilities for personal enrichment and social community.  

Lili Bita remarks, “I have tried throughout my career as a writer and performer to bring Eros to life around me and to create the ground for it in others at any age or time of life. FLESHFIRE, more than anything else I have done, expresses this goal.” . 

ABOUT LILI BITAGreek-born Lili Bita is one of the few classically trained actresses now resident in America. A native of the island of Zante, she graduated both from the Greek Conservatory of Music and the Athens School of Drama, and holds an M.A. in Drama from the University of Miami. After a notable career in Greece performing classical and contemporary roles for leading directors, she settled in the United States. In this country she has appeared widely on stage, television and radio, and held appointments at several universities. She tours extensively with her one woman shows,"The Greek Woman Through the Ages"," Body Light" and "Freedom or Death."

Lili Bita has published ten books and chapbooks of poetry, two books of short fiction, a novella, two volumes of translation, and several plays. Her work has been translated into English, French, Spanish, German, and Bengali.
