Many Arms + Colin Fisher
Colin Fisher solo
Many Arms will be collaborating on a new set of music with our good friend Colin Fisher. Colin will be joining us on tenor sax for this new material, but also opening up the show with a solo guitar set.
Colin's bio:
Multi-instrumentalist (guitar, saxophone, drums, guzheng, tanbour, flutes, misc instruments) and composer. Colin Fisher is an active voice in the Improvised, Rock, Folk, Experimental and Creative Music Community in North America.
Has been most active with Not the Wind Not the Flag, Elfin Choirs (solo project), Bernice, Bad Breath, HAHA, Body Help, Pick-A-Piper, Steve Kado’s 2003 band, New Civilization, Prince Enoki Insect Orchestra, - Colin has appeared and collaborated with: Anthony Braxton, Caribou, Jah Youssouf, Rhys Chattam, William Parker, Dominic Duval, Sabir Mateen, Joe Mcphee, Maury Coles, David Daniels, Chris Kelsey, Paul Hession, and many others.
Many Arms bio:
Formed in 2007, Philadelphia and New York-based Many Arms are a power trio in the truest sense of the term. The band’s music is a loud, aggressive blend of punk and free jazz, tied together with compositions that twist and turn through angular unison melodies and complex rhythmic vamps.
Many Arms’ punk rock touring ethos has taken their music across the US and Canada numerous times, where they've shared bills with many bands, including Marnie Stern, Nat Baldwin, Tera Melos, Dysrhythmia, Extra Life, Schnaak, Bardo Pond, Normal Love, Inzinzac, Eric Carbonara, Yowie, Les Rhinoceros, Mario Diaz De Leon, and Pitom.
To date, Many Arms have released three full-length albums and one EP. In 2012, the not-for-proft cooperative record label Tzadik Records (owned and operated by composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist John Zorn) released the band's third full-length, simply titled Many Arms.

Spring Garden Music
Presents
Andrea Pensado electronics, Salem MA
Walter Wright electronics, Lowell MA
Ben Bennett, solo, unamplified objects (percussion), Columbus OH
Bob Falesch, electronics, Ogdensburg, NY
Jack Wright, alto and soprano saxes, Easton PA
Andrea Pensado works with sound as a performer, composer and teacher. She has been using digital media and live interactive musical systems since 1995. She studied in Argentina and Poland. At first, she composed mainly for acoustic instruments. However, she gradually felt more attracted by different sound realms. Today, the abrasive digital noise of her improvisations is far away from her earlier pieces. Harsh dense layers of sounds, often interwoven with her voice, combine hybrid synthesis and sampling techniques to create a highly personal sound language, which reflects an intuitive, emotional and paradoxically also logical approach to music making. She currently lives in the US.
Walter Wright is an improviser on electronics of his fabrication. He is also a interdisciplinary artist, and community arts advocate. Educated as an architect, he has graduate degrees in engineering and interdisciplinary art. He is a co-founder of 119 Gallery in Lowell MA where he produces new music and performance events. One of these is XFest, an annual festival for improvised sound, video and movement. He teaches new media at UMass Lowell. He is a member of Apocalypso, bodydrama, Los Condenados, Loup-Garou, and One-Armed Mist. Most recently he toured with Stephanie Lak and this summer will tour Apocalypso.
Ben Bennett's current music stems mainly from various forms of free-improv: maximalist, reduced, noise, etc. A desire to get the most varied and visceral array of sounds from the simplest instruments has led to an ongoing process of distilling the drumset to its essential sound-maker, the vibrating membrane. Using extended techniques involving breath and friction, as well as the time-honored tradition of hitting things with sticks, he plays an evolving pile of frame drums, pre-tuned drum heads, metal things, tubes, and other objects that can be combined and recombined to get a variety of sounds during a performance. This set-up lends itself greatly towards being crammed in a backpack, strapped to a bike, dragged along the ground, or thrown down the stairs, generally without physical or psycological damage. Ben will be resident at the Spring Garden Music house during Dec. and Jan. 2012-13. For more info on playing partners and recordings: http://milmin.nixsyspaus.org/index.html
Bob Falesch, from Chicago, uses computers in freely improvised performance contexts for which he has designed several software systems. He has composed works for instrumental soloists and vocalists, for small ensembles, electronic music for tape, musicians with live electronics, and for theater and dance. He is the founder/producer and formerly co-host of the weekly two-hour "Classical and Beyond" program on WNUR-FM, has brought to Chicago the music of composer Karlheinz Essl and Hans Tutschku, and founded and organized two performing groups: Ensemble Mobius Midicus and FM Reception, the latter of which was the core of a semi-monthly series of improvised music workshops. As performer, Falesch has appeared at the High Zero(Baltimore), NEMO'96(Chicago), and Big Sur (California) international music festivals, the 2oo2 SEAMUS Conference, and at various other events in the USA. Falesch is documented on CD releases "Co-lage" and "Water Music" with Bob Marsh, solo releases "5xd" and "2k", and "Clang" and "I'd rather be a sparrow" with Jack Wright.
In the late 1970s, following an academic teaching career and radical politics, Jack Wright began directing his energies into playing the saxophone, which he had done in his youth. He is today one of the few musicians that have played improvised music exclusively since that time. Through years of touring in Europe and North America he came to be regarded as the "Johnny Appleseed of Improvised Music", inspiring countless others, and widely recognized as an original and virtuosic saxophonist, continually renewing his approach to music. As one reviewer said, he is an "undergrounder by design", but another reviewer (in the Washington Post) said, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king". Now living in Easton PA.

Catching Babies is the journey of women as they reclaim the tradition of midwifery on the border." The film follows three student-midwives during their journey at the midwifery school Maternidad la Luz in El Paso, Texas. We watch as mothers go through the emotional experiences during their pregnancies and births, as they overcome challenges with the help of family and their midwives.
The documentary follows these young women as they discover the highs and lows of what it means to pursue midwifery, home birth, and Mexica culture.
The story of Mothers, Babies, and Birth is a timeless one, and the intimate look into birth center Maternidad la Luz provides a look into a honored tradition of mothers and midwives. This film is a unique view into a sacred world where women are celebrated as being in control of their births.
The film is directed by Barni Quazzim.

9:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Part of Cage: Beyond Silence, which runs October 26, 2012 - January 20, 2013 at a variety of venues in Philadelphia.
Created the year he died, Cage’s only feature-length film One11 (1992) was composed entirely using 1,200 random operations devised by a computer—each determining the movements of a crane-mounted camera and the qualities of lighting within an empty room. A meditation on the perception of emptiness that harks back to Cage’s much earlier 4’33” (1952), One11 is a film without subject, persons or things, offering instead a sublime impression of another, timeless place. For this performance, a video of Cage’s own realization will be accompanied by a recording of its companion piece, 103 (for a large orchestra).
Cage: Beyond Silence is a major festival celebrating the music of John Cage. Taking place at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and venues across the city, events will unfold in three parts. The first, Move from Zero (October 26 - November 4, 2012) will provide an introduction to John Cage's music, focusing on seminal works from his early career, such as Sonatas and Interludes (1946 - 48) and Music of Changes (1951), 4'33" (1952), and will explore a variety of other stylistic periods through his solo repertoire. Parts two and three-subtitled The Year Begins to be Ripe (November 30 - December 12, 2012) and At Least We Have Begun (January 11 - 20, 2013) respectively-will juxtapose two of Cage's "magnum opuses," the mid-career polystylistic Song Books (Solos for Voice3-92) (1970) and the late-career meditative series of compositions titled Number Pieces (1987 - 1992). Several works will be given multiple performances, underlining the important role of the interpreter in realizing Cage's scores and emphasizing the ephemeral and changing nature of these indeterminate works.
This festival will be presented in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art's major exhibition Dancing around the Bride: Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg, and Duchamp.
Confirmed artists include Margaret Leng Tan, Christian Wolff, Keith Rowe, Pauline Oliveros, Michael Pisaro, Joseph Kubera, Joan Labarbara and Ne(x)tworks, the BSC, JACK Quartet with James Hirschfeld, PRISM Quartet with, Curtis Ensemble 20/21, Network for New Music, Relâche, Either/Or, Rob Haskins and Laurel Karlik Sheehan, Dan Blacksberg, Jay Campbell, and more.

Here’s what some of our pledges have said:
I am still vegan (and trying to slowly convert the rest of the family). - Kelley Romyn
I am still vegan and doing well. I think I'm hooked on vegan for life. I've been trying to get my family to eat less meat and more fruits, vegetables and legumes. I've had limited success but I'm not giving up. - Patrick Reither
I am still 100% vegan, and doing some further research so that I can transition to be raw vegan. I feel great and I love my new lifestyle. - Chrissy Dwyer
My interest in becoming vegan was to learn healthier eating habits. The education I received from the meetings and my own research about the treatment of the animals and the impact on the environment really got my attention and repulsed to me say the least. More importantly how the consumption of animals affects my health - especially dairy. My husband and I have adapted to the lifestyle and will stick with it will little efforts. - Michele

NEW///// MUSIC- IMPROV////// & SOUND STRUCTURE SERIES
Vavatican:
Booker Stardrum: percussion, Nathaniel Morgan: alto saxophone, Owen Stewart-Robertson: guitar, Weston Minissali: synthesizer
(pROM nIGHT rECORDS) Brooklyn. New Music group exploring the potential of timbre and form by use of extended technique, graphic notation and intuition, composing music that is a finely tuned amalgamation of improvisation and structure. The group's compositional aesthetics has been described as reminiscent of the efforts of Morton Feldman and early AACM.
Superlith:
(from Something Else! by S. Victor Aaron)
"Just when you think you’ve heard it all — literally — some really crafty cats come along and create sounds that hadn’t quite been previously contemplated. A couple of such musicians from Philadelphia’s fertile experimental music scene banded together to create some of this alien but strangely alluring noise. Trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Anthony Braxton Quartet, Archer Spade duo with Nick Millevoi) and transmuted Casio keyboard technician Julius Masri (Electric Simcha, Avant rock band LionsHead, Noise duo Chakra Khan/Air Pirates with Millevoi) pooled their vast experience working on the fringes of music to form a New Music duo called Superlith and recently came out with their first album, Plasma Cluster. (Public Eyesore/Eh? Records)
Each of these players brings a unique perspective to the table. Masri is a trained jazz drummer whose curiosity about electronic sounds became a passion that’s led him to compose electronic music for choreography projects. For his part, Blacksberg sees no bounds in the sonorous possibilities of the trombone; he’s a superb technician who wants to go beyond merely doing what’s been done before and push the trombone into unfamiliar territory. On Plasma Cluster, he exploits the openings he sees to do so within the realm of electronic avant garde, and finds the complements to the buzzes, drones and chiming of Masri’s circuit-bent machinery."
MPSP
MPSP is Mark Price and Sebastian Petsu, sonicists who align their broken and unorthodox techniques embarking on frenzied, derailed, and blasted-out joy rides through house, hiphop, metal, dub, and American noise. Mark Price solos as the enigmatic and genuinely unpredictable Cars Will Burn. Described as a methodical dissection of Top 40 hip-hop club bangers that are at once scummy and decadent. Ultimately saying “yes, but…” to the world in the finest sampler abuse tradition. For Sebastian Petsu, live manipulations of cassettes and cassette players form the core of his sound art process. Sebastian began re-purposing and layering found tapes with the Rain of Belle Isle duo. In current collaborations he now utilizes an unfair amount of controlled, textured tape deck feedback.

The Vegan Pledge started in the UK. Board members of Peace Advocacy Network brought the Pledge to the US and with great success. The PAN Vegan Pledge program encourages people to adopt a vegan diet for 30 days with the program’s hands-on support. This support includes five weekly meetings consisting of cooking demonstrations, speakers addressing environmental, ethical, health, and practical issues , a personal mentor (experienced vegan), optional social events for even more support, and an incredible care package to make 30 days of being vegan that much easier. Meetings are Jan 12, 19 26, Feb 2, and Feb 9, with the first three happening here at The Rotunda, 11am-2pm.
The program is FREE. However, we do require an interview for final admission to the program. Pledges are expected to come to all of the meetings. Mentors are expected to come to the first and last meetings.
- Michele

Theatre of the Oppressed combines images, sounds, movements and dialogue into ideas and actions for making social change. For 5 weeks this winter, we focus on the topics of race and racism. We aim to create a safe space where participants can speak their own truth and start to do the important work of unlearning the systemic racism we’ve been taught our entire lives. We hope to offer people healing from their racial privileges and oppressions while also giving them a starting point to make the structural and personal changes that can undo racism in ourselves, our communities and our world. Each 2-hour session will mix theatrical games and techniques with discussion supplemented by take-home readings and practical assignments to be enacted in everyday life.
There's a pay-what-you-wish intro class on Monday, January 28th from 7 to 9pm. The series runs the following 5 Mondays (February 4th through March 4th) at the same time. Series participants must be able to attend all 5 weeks, and must pre-register before February 1st by emailing "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Series tuition is sliding scale, $45-$95. Worktrade is available upon request.
