This event grew directly out of a breakthrough experienced by trauma survivor and party organizer Michael Broussard. After decades of being too insecure and afraid to dance due to PTSD, he made a breakthrough and reconnected with his 6-year-old self, the kid who felt free to dance and laugh and smile without fear.The Balter Dance Party is a true come-as-you-are party: T-Shirt and Jeans, Prom Wear, Cosplay, Drag, Steampunk, wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.Join the amazing DJ DuiJi Mshinda for a night of eclectic music programmed by you! Nurse have the best stories. Come out and hear them!Penn Nursing and Penn Medicine Nursing are hosting a nursing-focused Story Slam event. Penn Nursing faculty and students as well as Penn Medicine nurses will share their true, personal, six-minute stories about their nursing experiences and insights. The stories will be grounded in the theme of innovation, which explores the breadth, depth, and diversity of nursing. If innovation represents ideas, then who has better ideas than nurses? And what better way to express those ideas than through storytelling! The Nursing Story Slam will be held on February 13, 2019, 6-8pm at The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street. Bowerbird is pleased to present the world premiere of Greg Brown’s Fall and Decline performed by Variant 6. The new work composed for voices and electronics is based on texts of Sadakichi Hartmann, Eprenius, Todd Hearon, Edward Gibbon, and Omar Khayyam. The composition contemplates the inevitable decline of all things natural and manmade. Variant 6 pairs this new work with other pieces for voices and electronics, as well as selections of Medieval and Renaissance music.ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
Variant 6 is a virtuosic vocal sextet that explores and advances the art of chamber music in the twenty-first century. The ensemble’s work includes radically re-imagining concert experiences, commissioning substantial new works, collaborating closely with other ensembles, and educating a new generation of singers. Variant 6 has collaborated with a wide range of ensembles and composers, including Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, Arcana New Music Ensemble, Mobius Percussion Quartet, Square Peg Round Hole and Andrew Lipke, Jeremy Gill, Gregory W Brown, Kevin Laskey, and Wally Gunn. Brandon Lopez is a bassist and composer working in the field of far-left musics, with a primary focus on improvisation. Since relocating to New York City not long ago, the Passaic, New Jersey native has become one of the most in-demand players of his generation, sharing the stage with such avant-garde visionaries as William Parker, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Lopez performs regularly with Amirtha Kidambi’s Elder Ones and the Weasel Walter Large Ensemble, along with groups led by Peter Evans, Tyshawn Sorey, and Joe Morris. He was the 2018 Artist-in-Residence at Issue Project Room and the Van Lier Fellow at Roulette Intermedium. Steve Baczkowski is an improviser, saxophonist, and multi-wind instrumentalist who has served as music director of Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, N.Y, since 1999, producing and presenting hundreds of concerts of contemporary music as well as numerous community-based artist residencies. In addition to organizing multiple ensembles, such as the Buffalo Improvisers Orchestra and the Buffalo Suicide Prevention Unit, Baczkowski also performs with the 12/8 Path Band, Genkin Philharmonic, Ubudis Quartet, Rey Scott’s Unusually Different, and in duos with percussionists Ravi Padmanabha and John Bacon and guitarists Bill Nace, Omar Tamez, and Bill Sack. Drummer Gerald Cleaver is a product of Detroit’s rich music tradition, gaining invaluable experience as a teenager playing with Detroit jazz masters Ali Muhammad Jackson, Lamont Hamilton, Earl Van Riper, and Pancho Hagood. He usually performs in his acoustic harmony folk-pop trio Lessick & Lincoln & Cohen, (singer/percussionist Steve Lessick and bass player Art Cohen) who released a rock album in 2007 under the name Men From When. This will be a group-curated event. If you are interested, please make it to one of our planning meetings listed below.Meetings: Saturday January 26th, 2:00-3:30PM,or Sunday February 24th, 2:00-3:30PM. Both meetings will take place at The Rotunda. You do not have to attend both but we do ask that you let us know which you will attend. At the meetings, we can further discuss your ideas and your needs to fulfill your vision. Theme: When I Am The Princess With which princess do you identify? Growing up, many of us identify with [white? European?] princesses whether we like them or not. Nowadays, princess camp, princess parties, princess movies/games/dresses/you name it are all the rage. How does that influence your life as an adult? How does it contribute to what you expect to get out of life, and out of other people?Here are a few generic questions: to get us thinking:Do you dream of being a princess one day? What exactly is the princess archetype? How do you fight it? Who are the princesses you grew up with and can you give them a voice?Are there positive aspects to emulating princesses, especially those who represent the people, come from non-European and non-Western backgrounds, and fight for liberation? How does the princess archetype shape gender roles? Where do boys, men, and non binary people fit in?As for the presentation: We want individual artists or groups to have their own slots for performance/presentation, but we want the entire group to hear your pitches first, see how you might work together on your pieces if that makes sense, and, eventually, decide on the order of the program. In doing this, all participants will have a hand in the finished public program. Gerald and Gina will be offering guidance on set lengths, ideas, and technical assistance. The objective is to stir up the subconscious and think about how we are being programmed by concepts like The Princess, which is probably the most effective icon in manipulating people.

Building Brotherhood: Healing the Wounds of Trauma and Violence6:30-8:30pmJoin the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS) Engaging Males of Color (EMOC) Initiative and Mural Arts Philadelphia in an important conversation about the ways that men and boys of color can heal from the trauma and violence in their lives. Using the themes of unity, history, and bonding from the EMOC mural Building Brotherhood s a foundation, panelists and participants will share their thoughts, concerns, and resolutions on safety and mental wellness after a year which saw the highest number of murders in Philadelphia in a decade. Resource tables will be available.
