Daniel Fishkin and Bowerbird present COMPOSING THE TINNITUS SUITES: 2016 a concert series about hearing damage September 23, September 30, October 2, October 16 in the Sanctuary of The Rotunda In 2008, composer Daniel Fishkin's ears started ringing, and they never stopped. Doctors offered no solace besides, "You get used to it." In the absence of a medical cure, Fishkin vowed to find a creative solution. "I do not want to get used to my hearing damage - I want to use it." Composing the Tinnitus Suites: 2016 is a concert series and sound installation that investigates the aesthetics of hearing damage. The series is anchored by the Lady's Harp - a system of 20-foot long piano wires activated by mixer feedback, using guitar pickups and pressure transducers to coax the strings into vibration. The Lady's Harp's buzzing strings create a forest of sound; as you walk around the room, the notes change along with your movements. The concerts are buoyed by conversations with neuroscientists and scholars who confront hearing loss or disability in their practice and personal lives. To make 'Tinnitus Music' is not just to compose sounds, but also to compose situations that can break the isolation of the experience of hearing damage. Composing the Tinnitus Suites is about listening to the way tinnitus makes one listen. FALL HARVEST CELEBRATION TO FEATURE FIRE AND FLOW ARTS Poet-tree En Motion’s Seasonal Arts Showcase is Free to the Community Flames will rage once again – the flames of creative inspiration and fire performance – as Poet-tree En Motion exhibits its 10th annual fall arts showcase to celebrate the harvest season Wednesday, Oct. 5 at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia. Poet-tree En Motion has gained a reputation in the city for highlighting some of the best and brightest established and up-and-coming regional artists in a variety of disciplines while also giving the community a chance to shine on the open mike and open stage. Multi-award-winning artistic director Gabrielle de Burke weaves together performances by artists of many different styles to create a magical display of the arts that ends up flowing seamlessly. “Poetry in motion is a lot of different things,” de Burke says. “It’s not just stuck on a page. It’s not just stuck on a stage. It’s moving in time. All of the artists are expressing poetry but just in different forms. I want the event to be an expression of the many different ways in which poetry is present in our lives whether it’s music, dance, art or visual performance.” The “Fall Harvest Flow and Fire Festivities” event will kick off at 7 p.m. with spoken word and a yin-yang yoga flow and chi-kung workshop led by de Burke. The practice will be accompanied by live electronic ambient soundscapes and visual projections by artist Bruce Leitch. Every fall Poet-tree En Motion event features a fire and flow arts troupe performance. This year three members of the Burning Hearts Fire and Light Theater, a troupe that’s been making waves since 2010, most notably in the Lehigh Valley, Pa. and at regional “burner” events, will show off their skills. The trio – Sarah Fulton, bellydancer Lorenda and Ashley Riccaboni – will give two performances. Their first piece will feature flow artistry involving hooping, silk veils, swords, Isis wings and LED lights. The last performance of the evening will be outside in front of the Rotunda with the trio dancing with a variety of exciting fire props. In between Burning Hearts performances, legendary Philly DJ Jeff Omega will give a special tribal house set to get the audience grooving and moving. “Community showcases like Poet-tree En Motion are fantastic platforms for burgeoning performers and creators and I'm excited to be invited to share my craft at this venue,” says Fulton, manager of the Burning Hearts. “It's a great way to meet other performers and support one another.” Poet-tree En Motion’s “Fall Harvest Flow and Fire Festivities” is scheduled for 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the Rotunda, located at 4014 Walnut St., West Philadelphia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5-$20 to support future performance projects by Plum Dragoness. There will also be a silent auction featuring gift certificates, artisan and antique vintage jewelry, accessories, handcrafted and wild-crafted pieces, art and more. The next Poet-tree En Motion event is scheduled for March, and it will feature female artists for its annual Women’s History Month celebration. A special evening of crankies (moving panorama puppetshows) & music with traveling friends Liz Downing from Baltimore performing her crankie show "Piggly Wiggly" (a standout from this year's Cranky Fest), her musical duo Lurch & Holler, and Joshua Marcus (from Providence). Joined by local acts Geb the Great Cackler and a triptych of ballad-crankies from the trio of Shaina Kapuleck, Erik Ruin and Julius Masri.Doors at 7. Sliding scale donation of $5-10 requested.Liz Downing- Joshua & I were wowed by Liz's crankie "Piggly-Wiggly" at the Crankie Festival last year in Baltimore. Witty narrative, beautiful music and fantastic drawings- one of the finest in the medium!Lurch & Holler- For more than 20 years, [Baltimore] luminaries Liz Downing and Michael Willis have been making beautiful music together in Lambs Eat Ivy, Radiant Pig, and now, Lurch & Holler. A unique blend of down-home twang and highbrow art song colors their work, and these 10 songs add a bit of lo-fi experimentalism and ambient field recordings to the mix. Bolstered by sturdy banjo and Willis's sonorous baritone, Downing's voice swoops wistfully through scenarios gleaned from kitchenettes, parlors, and motels before soaring into an ether of radio waves, literary ghosts, and prayer. In the Cabin Below channels the gospel of Flannery O'Connor and the maverick meditations of Pauline Oliveros. It feels, at times, like sacred music by sonic adventurers swigging from a Mason jar. ”— John Lewis, Baltimore Magazinehttps://soundcloud.com/lurch-and-hollerJoshua Marcus- the prodigal hometown hero returns! Joshua Marcus loves cooking, all things musical, and to both orchestrate & be part of tangibly authentic experiences in the actual world. CAGE, TUDOR, RAUSCHENBERG: 9 EVENINGS 50th anniversary documentary film screening of JOHN CAGE "Variations VII" (41 mins) DAVID TUDOR "Bandoneon ! [a combine]" (39 mins) ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG "Open Score" (33 mins) Bowerbird is pleased to screen three documentary films marking the 50th anniversary of "9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering". In 1966 ten New York artists and thirty engineers and scientists from Bell Telephone Laboratories collaborated on a series of innovative dance, music and theater performances, "9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering", held in October at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City. The artists were John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Oyvind Fahlstrom, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor and Robert Whitman. For these films, archival material has been combined with interviews with the artists, engineers and performers to illuminate the artistic, technical and historical aspects of the work. Variations VII, performed at 9 Evenings, was the next to last in John Cage''s series of indeterminate works that he had begun in 1958, which made increasing use of electronic equipment and systems. This DVD documents the only complete performance of Variations VII and also presents a stereo audio recording of the full 85 minutes of the performance. Bandoneon ! (a combine) is David Tudor's first full concert work as a composer. Tudor played the bandoneon as the input into a complex sound and visual modification system that moved sound from speaker to speaker and controlled lights and video images, creating a work that animated the entire Armory space. This DVD documents the performance with film and vintage photographs as well as interviews with the performers, engineers and Tudor's fellow composers. is the first film to be released in a series that will bring to life a historic moment in contemporary art history. In Open Score , Robert Rauschenberg derived the content of his performance from the characteristics of the performance venue. The tennis racquet suggested both the idea of the ready-made (at other times tennis was played at the Armory) and that of a dance improvised in accordance with specific rules. Admission is FREE |

Event Horizon Series October 29th Harrison McKay,The Great Quentini and Hotel Neon The Great Quentini - Playfulness, Respect, Honesty and Hope - My art is about instinct. Whatever disciplinary boundaries I cross are irrelevant to me. I know what I like and I go there trusting that what fascinates me is, in fact, fascinating. My art springs from that same playful part of myself that compels me to build sand castles on a beach. Art world angst, which I've always found alienating, is neither my approach nor my goal. Ephemeral art made from readily available materials, improvised music on homemade instruments, and spectacles of buffoonery in the service of magical transformation are my goals. I am constructing an alternate reality the way a small boy builds a model train layout. I reuse cast-off wood, plastic, metal and rubber junk and glue it all together using instructions from inner sources, a reflection of natural form, and a homage to tribal art. I don't seek to replicate reality but rather to create a real emotional sense through gesture. I observe the human condition and report back my findings. These reports take the form of expressive vignettes and autobiographical stories from my life. For convenience I have come to call what I do, Performance Art. A ten year old boy viewing my performance put it this way, "Don't be afraid, he's just a sacred clown" Clowning, theater, poetic writing, animal noises, techno-primitive costumes, and improvised music, are elements that I use --but I blur the boundaries and exist across boundaries. My work is an opportunity to expand the possibility of what is possible rather than a continuation of a venerable tradition. I make good-natured art based on my varied interests: philosophy, science, religion, myth, culture, how the brain works, film, primitive art, evolution, drugs, sex, and technological change. The world is full to the brim with greed, fear, hatred and avarice - I don't want to add to that. My message is, "Do what you love to the fullest , trust yourself, honor life and Laugh, its good for you." -- Quentin Davisv- a.k.a. The Great Quentini Hotel Neon is the Philadelphia-based trio of Michael Tasselmyer, Andrew Tasselmyer & Steven Kemner. Together they create immersive and soul-stirring soundscapes, focusing intently on a restrained, minimal aesthetic aided by film, images, and live projections. Hotel Neon’s debut self-titled album was crafted in 2013 with little more than a personal computer in a home studio, then self-released on limited cassette tape. The music eventually caught the ear of Ian Hawgood, founder of eclectic Tokyo-based label Home Normal (Christopher Bissonette, Celer, Library Tapes), and was subsequently remastered in January 2015 by Hawgood himself, lending even greater dynamic range to the music. The grainy textures, mechanized rhythms, and subterranean bass pulses that permeate the album were made clearer and more focused, leading to positive critical review and "Best Of 2015" status in outlets like Headphone Commute, Textura, and Arctic Drones.Hotel Neon then released its newest work, “Remnants,” through acclaimed U.K. experimental imprint Fluid Audio in March 2016, followed by extensive touring throughout the U.S.A. with fellow ambient artists Lowercase Noises (NM) and Slow Meadow (TX, Hammock Music). "My recent diagnosis of stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma is a bit unnerving. I'm going to need intensive radiation and chemotherapy. Hopefully , after they shrink my tumor , the doctors can cut out what is left. I'm looking at a 3 month hospital stay and 2 months bed rest at home. All that time, unfortunately won't be able to work. I could sure use some financial, emotional, and physical help. I've fed 1000's of people over the years. Now I need help to be fed. Most sincerely, Chef" Please visit Chef Geoff's GoFundMe site and consider a generous donation.
MORE EVENT HORIZON SERIES EVENTS AT THE ROTUNDA! November 11th Michael Rabito, Rosie Langabeer and It's Not Night...It's Space Michael Rabito is a musician that has been discovering his propensity for the fusion of opposites for many years now. He started taking the electric guitar seriously when he was eleven and was playing out professionally by the time he left for college with his band in Vermont. After a move to Boston the bringing together of the free flow of improvisation and the rigidity of structure increased as he played with a group of Berklee College of Music musicians for about five years. During this time his interest in loops, synthesizers and keyboards began to grow and helped to fuse space, harmony, action and dissonance. This has all culminated with his latest project back in the Princeton area called Manifested; A progressive fusion of funk, rock, dance and ambient music that has brought the group to New York, Boston, Philadelphia and many points between within their first year. They can be heard here with more information at their facebook page. Michael also performs interactive ambient space music with local visual artist Ted Klett. They will be preforming at Art All Night on June 15th -16th and can be heard at on the AutonomicDrone soundcloud page. Rosie Langabeer - Hailed by the New York Times for her ability to time bend, Rosie Langabeer’s sound is more like a transnational emporium of amusements, than music. Using electronic and acoustic instruments ingredients of exotica, science fiction, free jazz and an evolving cast of superfluities combine, resulting in something elusively familiar “…a suspended, surreal condition.” NY Times. A regular composer for theatre and dance companies, Langabeer has performed throughout New Zealand and the US and also in Sri Lanka, Japan, Mexico, France and Great Britain, recent festival appearances include Baltimore’s High Zero Festival (2016), Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, (MA, 2016), Borderline Festival, (Auckland, 2016), Joyce Theater Ballet Festival (NY, 2015). Collaborators include Neil Feather, BalletX, Maiko Matsushima, Pig Iron Theatre Company, Andrew Mars/Settled Arrows, Kate Porter, Jeff Henderson and Chris O’Connor. It’s Not Night: It’s Space - United as though at the behest of the cosmos itself, the members of It’s Not Night: It’s Space came together with immediate chemistry early in 2011. By October at that year, their first self-released EP, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, had been released, and the band – founded by guitarist Kevin Halcott and drummer Michael Lutomski, but by then also including bassist Tommy Guerrero – set about honing their interstellar craft over the course of regional gigs around their native quadrant of New Paltz while conducting research with the SETI for what would become their debut long-player, Bowing Not Knowing to What. It was this album that set It’s Not Night: It’s Space on the path of anti-gravity exploration, the trio of Halcott, Guerrero and Lutomski honing in on natural jams thickened and given orbital pull by dense tones and an ever-expanding wall of fuzz. Feeling that language could only limit the universal nature of their message, INNIS kept their game centered around the guitar, bass and drums, and made first contact with Small Stone Records early in 2013, who immediately offered support for their ongoing investigations. The debut cooperative effort between the two parties is scheduled for launch in the yet-undetermined future known as 2014.
