Event Horizon Series presents William Fields & Ben Fleury-Steiner, John Phillips, Joo Wan Park & OINC William Fields is an electronic musician and audio/visual artist from Wilmington, Delaware. His main interest is in exploring rhythm and audiovisual synesthetics in an improvisational context. Ben Fleury-Steiner is an electronic musician from Wilmington, Delaware. He ran the Gears of Sand label (2004-2011). Since 2000, he has focused most on experimental drone and ambient releasing numerous albums on Infraction, low-point, Rural Colours and other labels. His recent interests have turned to pushing the boundaries of classic polyrhythmic electronica; the focus of his current collaboration with William Fields John Phillips is a sound and video artist. His work has included interactive sound and video works and collaborative sound/sculpture/video installations in museums (Museum of American Art at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), alternative spaces (Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia; Cini Foundation, Venice, Italy; Disston Saw Works, Philadelphia) and various university art galleries (Dartmouth College, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University among others). His tape works have been performed at New York City dance and theater venues, international electronic art festivals and on nationally syndicated New American Radio. His live sound and video performances have been featured in numerous venues in Philadelphia (Philadelphia Museum of Art, Temple Gallery, Annenberg Center) and also in New York City; his composing has been supported by American Composers Forum (collaboration with Pauline Oliveros) and the Millay Colony (composer in residence) and he has enjoyed five residencies at the Experimental Television Center to pursue his video work. Joo Won Park performs live with toys, consumer electronics, kitchenware, vegetables, and other non-musical objects by digitally processing their sounds. He also makes pieces with field recordings, sine waves, and any other sources that he can record or synthesize. Joo Won draws inspirations from Florida swamps, Philadelphia skyscrapers, his two sons, and other soundscapes surrounding him. For this Event Horizon show, Joo Won is bringing Oberlin Improvisation and New Music Collective (OINC). A blindfolded boy spills secrets about bright lights, bad cartoons, and learning how to be a vampire. But when a team of eye doctors, gym coaches, powerful sorcerers and potential mates try to pry his eyes open, what will he see? The answer may be in the ice cream. And ice cream will certainly be served in CONES. CONES, designed and performed by Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews and directed by co-creator Mason Rosenthal, premiered at the 2015 SoLow Festival. The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society hosts Fran Wilde Fran Wilde writes science fiction and fantasy. She can also tie a bunch of sailing knots, set gemstones, and program digital minions. She’s taught writing and digital media at two colleges, a high school for the creative arts, and a long-distance program for young writers. Her first novels will be published by Tor beginning in September 2015 with Updraft. Her short fiction has appeared in venues including Asimov’s, Nature Magazine, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and Tor.com. (Bibliography.) Her poetry has appeared in The Marlboro Review, Articulate, and Poetry Baltimore. Her critical work has appeared in Educause Quarterly. Her digital media projects include games, dynamic widgets, and 3D immersive narratives. She holds an MFA in poetry and an MA in information architecture and interaction design. She is a 2011 graduate of Viable Paradise and attended Taos Toolbox 2012. She reads too much and is a friend of the Oxford comma. Fran is represented by Russell Galen and Rachel Kory of Scovil Galen Gosh Literary, inc. The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society is a non-profit organization that meets to discuss and promote science fiction and fantasy in literature, the arts, and popular culture. Phaesporia is both an experiment and a study in the destruction of these unnatural cycles in which we remain stuck. It is a means of liberation from the plateaus of our cultures into a truly progressive world free of oppression. Phaesporia is the transference from cycle to an ever-extending spiral.This cycle has extended in infinite directions over the world for countless millennia. I expand this universality of the cycle, through the imagery and narratives of historical cultures. Thus the film intersects a myriad of mythologies including those of the Judeo-Christian, Greek, Hindu, Buddhist, and more. ECSTATIC & WINGLESS: Bird-Imitation on Four Continents - A presentation by Ian Nagoski Ecstatic & Wingless is an audio documentary project on early 20th century birdsong and its direct relationship on human performance - and human action on birdsong. It tells the story not only of the first recordings of cagebirds but also the practice of bird-imitation, a field that produced amazing and eccentric celebrities during the 1910s-20s. Rarely heard in recent years, bird imitation was also recorded commercially on every continent by 1925 and possibly predates music or language in human history. Music researcher Ian Nagoski has previously explored the porous boundaries of culture through 78rpm records of immigrants from collapsing European and Near Eastern empires as they arrived in the U.S. in early 20th century, and in the process, learned the stories of great, forgotten performers. With Ecstatic & Wingless, he has opened his exploration to the world of vaudevillians and bird-fanciers, of canaries, nightingales, finches, and the people who studied them, poeticized them, and tried to be them. Join us for an epic Klezmer Dance Party in West Philly featuring Susan Lankin-Watts, Dan Blacksberg, the Community Klezmer Orchestra, the KITA All-Stars, with Dancing led by the great Steve Weintraub!Award-winning artists Susan Lankin-Watts and Dan Blacksberg of the Community Klezmer Initiative host an evening of traditional and innovative Klezmer music focused on getting the crowd performing -- on instruments and on the dance floor.Come join in as the Community Klezmer Orchestra (led by Lankin-Watts) and the Klezmer in the Afternoon All-Stars (led by Blacksberg) rock the “hoyz” (Yiddish for “house”), setting the stage for dancing under the guidance of Steve Weintraub, the Pied Piper of Yiddish dance. Energy and momentum around Klezmer is at an all-time high in Philadelphia. The Community Klezmer Initiative (CKI), according to founder Susan Lankin-Watts, has been “harnessing that interest and excitement through workshops that invite participation from musicians at all levels, and through public Klezmer jams that include performances, improvisation and dance parties.” It’s now time to celebrate a year of successful CKI programming and to “bring the joyous energy of Klezmer into West Philly, at an event during which all who love this music can delight in it together,” adds Dan Blacksberg. About the ARTISTS:A fourth-generation Klezmer musician, Susan Lankin-Watts is a singer, trumpet player, composer, and arranger whose complex arrangements draw from tradition, the poetry of her great-grandfather, and a desire to give new voice to the art form and create Klezmer culture for a younger generation. An ambassador for her own Hoffman family musical lineage, she’s also a creative innovator within this rich artistic tradition. Susan has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and teaches locally. She has been honored with an award from the Leeway Foundation in 2012, and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2015. Trombonist Dan Blacksberg’s musical activity spans avant-garde jazz, modern classical music, improvised music and Klezmer. He is a founding member of Alan Bern’s The Other Europeans, and co-leads the Klezmer power trio Leviticus with Michael Winograd and Tyshawn Sorey. He has also played with many of the field’s top artists and taught at Klezmer Festival Fürth and Yiddish Summer Weimar in Germany, and has been an artist-in-residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2012.Steve Weintraub is a teacher, choreographer, and performer of Jewish dance, particularly Yiddish dance, the dance performed to Klezmer music. Steve received his dance training in Manhattan with Alvin Ailey and Erick Hawkins, among others.
