  • 7:00 PMThere is Nothing Wrong With You For Artists/Musicians/Performers - Getting Beyond Self-Hate
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

With a culture in which we have to have jobs, children, hobbies, an online presence, friends, etc., we can sometimes feel like we are not good enough. This goes back to childhood. In childhood, we had many pressures coming from being socialized (going to school, being in a family, being part of society) In order to survive we had to adapt how we acted in order to get attention, love, friendship from others. In that process we had to give up a part of ourselves. We learned to dislike the parts of ourselves that formed in this survival process. The one who is quiet to avoid getting yelled at. The one who is non confrontational to avoid getting picked on. The one who pretended to be someone else, etc. This behavior caused us to hate these part of ourselves since they masked out true selves. We stopped being and acting as our true nature. We then hated ourselves for this. This workshop reveals the origin of self-hate, how self-hate works, how to identify it, and how to go beyond it. It provides examples of some of the forms self-hate takes, including taking blame but not credit, holding grudges, and trying to be perfect, and explores the many facets of self-hate, including its role in addiction, the battering cycle, and the illusion of control.

I (Rich Wexler) will be teaching and coaching you through this process. I have a bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Education and have been teaching these workshops to other adults in variuos settings. I also have been incorporating into my life for many many years. This book and practice has saved me in many times of crisis and has opened up doors for me to be closer to who I wish to be in the world.

    25 slots only.

    * As artists, we have it equally tough because the art allowed us help our true nature to survive, we wrote songs, drew pictures, etc. This became survival for us and we have to make art to survive. The only problem is we can do this in non healthy manners. It can act as a form of addiction to help us avoid the tough parts of life we deal with. We are also not always respected as people since art and artists are not always paid what they are worth or seen as important people in culture. I have always identified as an artist and struggle with these thighs as well. Id you identify as a starving artists or masochistic artists you may start to see how you can be hurting yourself in the name of art.

  • 2:00 PMTORCH Antifa Conference 2015 - panel, film screening, concert
  • 2:00 PM - 11:00 PM

    TORCH Antifa Conference 2015

This November 7th and 8th Antifa Philadelphia is proud to host the 2nd annual TORCH Antifascist Network conference. The TORCH Antifa network is comprised of autonomous Antifascist groups who share information and resources. We expose, oppose and confront Neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan, Anti-migrant and Anti-Choice groups and individuals, as well as other bigots and fascists.

For more info on our analysis of fascism and our points of unity, as well as contact info for our chapters, go to Torchantifa.org.

We do not believe that these groups pose a small problem. Thousands upon thousands of act of violence and discrimination are perpetrated in this country by people who belong to these organizations every year. Thousands more by people who may not hold formal membership from fear or laziness but have similar beliefs. These cases are isolated and minimized as much as possible because the media has no interest in vilifying sexists or white supremacists the way they do Muslims, Black people and environmentalists.

In reality groups like American Freedom Party, Blood and Honor USA and the KKK recruit, train and embolden the “lone wolf” shooters, bombers and bashers. They also profit from it in money and privilege while injecting their racist, sexist and homophobic analysis into the mainstream political dialogue and making any sort of better world impossible.

The tactics of TORCH and groups like us have proven effective time and time again for years all over the world for neutralizing our enemies organizing abilities and recruiting methods. Because Antifa represent another example of people power trumping state authority, specifically its desire to coddle racists and fascists, repression for Antifascists has become a normal expectation. This, partnered with the danger represented by the Fascists themselves, makes attending this conference all the more crucial.

We are calling on all Anti-Racists, Anti-Fascists and egalitarians to join us in Philadelphia this fall to Network and socialize and maybe get involved in TORCH.

This conference will include both a public and private portion. The public portion will be open to all interested (no Fascists, obviously).

The public section of the conference will take place the afternoon and evening of Saturday November 7th at The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) in West Philly. We are very excited about all public events.

The first event, starting at 2:00 PM on Saturday will be a panel discussion and Q&A. The subject of the talk is “Militant Anti-Fascism and the Black Lives Matter Movement” and will include several Anti-Fascists and Black Lives Matter activists discussing the role that Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists, both in and out of uniform, have played in opposing the Black Lives Matter movement and how Anti-Fascists can counter them effectively.

Immediately after the talk at 3:00 PM, we will be hosting a screening of “In Memory of Our Friend Ivan,” an hour-long documentary about the life and murder of Russian Anti-Fascist Ivan Khutorskoi who was assassinated in Moscow in 2009. The film was only recently released with English subtitles recently and has not been screened more than a handful of times in the U.S. After the film at 4:00pm we will be showing a short sneak preview of “No Fascist USA,” an upcoming documentary about the Anti-Fascist movement in the United States by a member of Antifa Philadelphia.

Both those events are free though we will be collecting donations for Anti-Fascists political prisoners and those facing legal repression for Anti-Fascist work.

We will then be kicking everyone out for a few hours to get ready for the Show of Unity that evening. Doors will re-open at 6:30. 5 bucks to get in which goes to the acts and Antifa prisoners.

    The Garden of Light

The Garden of Light is an LED art installation and performance space that debuted at the Freeform Arts Festival in 2014. The display was even more magical in 2015 at Freeform and the Return to Roots Gathering, thanks to art grants from both festivals. The Garden is growing! The Garden of Light is an enchanting space filled with flickering, ever-changing patterns of lights set to music where artists are welcome to perform. You may sit next to the Buddha under the LED bodhi tree or cavort with the gnomes and fairies during the day. At night, the space becomes a party filled with bubbles, smoke and snow on the dance floor! We aim to bring The Garden of Light to even more festivals and events soon. The Garden of Light is an art installation created by Scott Abbott, founder and engineer of Open Show, which is a company that provides affordable open-source show control to performing artists. Both the Garden of Light and Open Show were created to help artists grow and perform their art in a dazzling way.

November 12 MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (1937 / 91 minutes) Heart-rending in its truth and emotional beauty, Leo McCarey’s masterpiece and most personal film was created both as a love letter to his recently deceased father and as an exposé of what can happen to elderly Americans without the support of Social Security (or their children). Orson Welles said of the film: “It would make a stone cry.” EVERYBODY’S FINE [STANNO TUTTI BENE] (1990 / 118 minutes) Marcello Mastroianni gives one of his best performances as an elderly widower who traverses Italy to visit his distant offspring, each of whom had given him an impression of their life which turns out to be very different from the actuality. A powerful and beautiful rumination on the relationship between elderly parents and their adult children. Guest Host and Curator: Mike Zaleski   December 10 PERMISSIVE (1970 / 90 min) At the end of the hippie era, a broke young woman arrives in London and is initiated into the counter-culture and the seedy sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll lifestyle of a groupie. Psychedelic soundtrack by Comus and Forever More.

DUFFER (1971 / 75 minutes) Joseph Despins and William Dumaresq’s off-beat and lyrical character study of a British teenage boy shuttlecocking between a sadistic old man and motherly prostitute.

    Event Horizon Series

    presents

The Great Quentini, Neil Feather, Vic Hennegan

    The Great Quentini -

Playfulness, Respect, Honesty and Hope - My art is about instinct. Whatever disciplinary boundaries I cross are irrelevant to me. I know what I like and I go there trusting that what fascinates me is, in fact, fascinating.

My art springs from that same playful part of myself that compels me to build sand castles on a beach. Art world angst, which I've always found alienating, is neither my approach nor my goal. Ephemeral art made from readily available materials, improvised music on homemade instruments, and spectacles of buffoonery in the service of magical transformation are my goals.

I am constructing an alternate reality the way a small boy builds a model train layout.  I reuse cast-off  wood, plastic, metal and rubber junk and glue it all together using instructions from inner sources, a reflection of natural form, and a homage to tribal art.

I don't seek to replicate reality but rather to create a real emotional sense through gesture.

I observe the human condition and report back my findings. These reports take the form of expressive vignettes and autobiographical stories from my life.  For convenience I have come to call what I do, Performance Art.  A ten year old boy viewing my performance put it this way, "Don't be afraid, he's just a sacred clown"

Clowning, theater, poetic writing, animal noises, techno-primitive costumes, and improvised music, are elements that I use --but I blur the boundaries and exist across boundaries. My work is an opportunity to expand the possibility of what is possible rather than a continuation of a venerable tradition.

I make good-natured art based on my varied interests: philosophy, science, religion, myth, culture, how the brain works, film, primitive art, evolution, drugs, sex, and technological change.  The world is full to the brim with greed, fear, hatred and avarice - I don't want to add to that.  My message is, "Do what you love to the fullest , trust yourself, honor life and Laugh, its good for you." -- Quentin Davisv- a.k.a. The Great Quentini

Neil Feather - Sound Mechanic Neil Feather has been creating radical and unusual musical instruments for thirty years, and is increasingly known outside of Baltimore as one of the most original musical thinkers of his day. His instruments each embody uniquely clever acoustic and engineering principles, and are visually arresting. The music he plays on the instruments is equally original, embodying new principles and resulting in a nearly alien idiom of music. A founding member of THUS and THE OFFICIAL PROJECT, as well as the leader of AEROTRAIN, he has a long history of collaborative projects and solo concerts.

Vic Hennegan has been writing, recording, producing and performing electronic music for several years.  As a live performer he has performed at such shows as ?The Gathering Concert Series in Philadelphia, Cyberstock of Los Angeles, Ecstatic Dance,  5 Rhythms Dance,  Soul Motion,Northern California Dance Collective and many other venues around the world.  With computers, samplers, vocals and synthesizers, Hennegan’s instinctive hand creates techno-trance and ambient music in a wildly fun, uplifting spiritual experience that will take your soul on a journey to the center of ecstasy.

With a culture in which we have to have jobs, children, hobbies, online presesnces, friends, etc. we can sometimes feel like we are not good enough. This goes back to childhood. In childhood we had many pressures coming from being socialized (going to school, being in a family, being part of society) In order to survive we had to adapt how we acted in order to get attention, love, friendship from others.

I will be teaching and coaching you through this process.

No Ideas But in Things - a film about Alvin Lucier

"Don't ask me what I mean, ask me what I've made." Inspired by this motto, this documentary accompanies the American composer Alvin Lucier (*1931) on concert travels to The Hague (Netherlands) and Zug (Switzerland). The filmmakers invite Lucier to explain and comment on his works: from his early live electronics performances ("Music for Solo Performer" (1965), and "Bird and Person Dyning" (1975)) - up to the premiere of his ensemble piece "Panorama 2" in 2011. One of Lucier's key works, "I Am Sitting in a Room" (1969), is introduced as a central structuring device in the film.

Filmed at his home in Middletown, Connecticut, Lucier offers rare insights into the beginnings of his pioneering works, his time as a member of the Sonic Arts Union, his relations with John Cage and David Tudor, as well as his teaching practice at Wesleyan University.

NO IDEAS BUT IN THINGS - this line by the American poet William Carlos Williams is one of Lucier's favorite quotes when he is asked about his artistic attitude. It also reflects the filmmakers' intention to create a portrait of Lucier that is primarily based on his work.
