Jim Stephens’ Full Tilt Boogie Band blends a soulful and upbeat hybrid of jazz, funk, rhythm and blues, and gospel.The band features Lucky Thompson on drums (Nina Simone, Big Mama Thornton, Billy Paul, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes) on drums, Elliott Levin (Sun Ra, Odean Pope, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Digable Planets) on tenor sax, Rah Sungee (Lauren Hill, Kindred The Family Soul, Blue Method) on bass, Scott Coulter (Get Happy) playing keys, Monique Canniere (Divine Hand Ensemble, Kanye West) on violin and vocals, Greg Moore on guitar (TMMUZIX, Dice Raw, Vivian Green), and the co-lead vocals of Kinyon Lanier (Tony Moore and Jehova’s Chosen), and Sarah Kane, an incredible soulful talent out of Philadelphia.

When not performing her own pieces, Shannon focuses on 20th century and contemporary works and has enjoyed working with composers Ezra Laderman, David Lang, Fay Wang, and percussionist/composer Andy Akiho. Her own music is a combination of process and looped cello and voice.

We are happy to bring the Leipzig-based pianist Simone Weissenfels to Philadelphia to perform solo and in a first time meeting with the trio of Keir Neuringer (reeds), Julius Masri (drums), and NYC’s Shayna Dulberger (bass).

Neuringer writes: "I first met Simone onstage in Leipzig in 2012. She was part of contingent of outstanding improvisers from the local scene there with whom I had a chance to perform. The music that night was fresh, exciting, and focused, and Simone’s technique and her dedication to her craft and the scene itself impressed me greatly. In early June she is coming to the US to establish a new duo with the NYC pianist Connie Crothers and play a few concerts in the northeast. In Philadelphia she will perform solo and in a quartet with me and two musicians I admire immensely: Shayna Dulberger, a brilliant rising star bassist and composer from NYC, and Philadelphia's own electrifying Julius Masri on drums."

Simone Weissenfels has been active since the 1980s in experimental, jazz, and classical music circles. She is an improviser, composer, organizer, and educator who has worked throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. In addition to work with visual artists and actors Simone has performed with Gisela May, Uschi Brüning, Juini Booth, Marco Eneidi, Klaus Kugel, Elliott Levin, Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, Lol Coxhill, John Sinclair, Ian Smith, Adam Smith, Daniel Carter, Manfred Hering, and many others.

Shayna Dulberger is an upright bassist who has been living and working in NYC since 2005. She has performed throughout North America and Europe and has worked with many artists including William Parker, Bill Cole, Jonathan Moritz, Darius Jones and Ras Moshe. Dulberger has released three albums as a leader. Time Out New York wrote "Led by bassist Shayna Dulberger, TheKillMeTrio [SR/2006] is one of the stronger avant-jazz groups we’ve heard in some time." Her second album "No more than a patch of wilderness is The Basement Recordings uniformly beautiful and vibrant" said New York City Jazz Record. In a review of her third album Ache & Flutter the Chicago Reader wrote "Dulberger provides the music’s muscular backbone: she drops assertive accents, judiciously prods her cohorts without getting in anyone’s way, and contributes seething solo work that hints at the playing of one of her mentors, William Parker".

Julius Masri is a percussionist and circuit bender, and is a performer/composer for the city's modern dance community at large. As a drummer, he can be seen playing in such bands as hasidic punk group Electric Simcha, psychotic Ragtime duo Mahogany Stompers, free-rock trio Lionshead, thrash metal duo Night Raids, Van Sutra with guitarist George Draguns (Don Caballero), and improv situations with reed player Keir Neuringer, guitarist Nick Millevoi, and many more. He also performs on circuit modified keyboards in Superlith with trombonist Dan Blacksberg and with Philadelphia based electronic music heroes Charles Cohen and Joo Won Park.

Keir Neuringer is a saxophonist, composer, and writer. He moved to Philadelphia in 2012. His most recent release is Ceremonies Out of the Air, an 80 minute solo saxophone double LP available on New Atlantis Records.

Good For Cows (Brooklyn/Philadelphia):

Good for Cows began as a duo in 1999 when Devin Hoff (string bass) and Ches Smith (drums) would meet regularly to work on musical ideas from a rhythm section's perspective. At first the two focused on creative interpretations of jazz compositions, particularly the music of Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, and Charles Mingus. It wasn't long before their shared love of independent rock ('punk') bands such as Black Flag, Minutemen, Minor Threat began to inform the duo's sound in their use of timbre, aggressive energy, and personal voice. Equally important were devices such as multidirectional rhythm, aural cues, and investigations of distinctive sound worlds gleaned from study of contemporary composer/performers Anthony Braxton, Vijay Iyer, Cecil Taylor, Fred Frith, and Wadada Leo Smith. Good for Cows have since written numerous compositions and improvisations, searching for the strengths of the spare bass and drums instrumentation. 

Wrest (Chatanooga, Easton & Columbus):

"Wrest-ing never does serious bodily harm but might scare your aunties and inlaws out of the room real quick. Sound and magic tricks on sax, floor percussion, bass. What happened? We don't know what we're doing until we're doing it." The kind of music we play is free improvisation, where the players cannot be counted on to play the same way each time. Wrest is restless; there is no typical Wrest "experience." We are using all our imagination each show to get past what we did the night before. Free Improvisation is an approach to playing by musicians who would be bored representing an image of what they are. That's why we can say, we don't know what we're doing until we do it.

Described twenty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," Jack Wright is happy to inhabit the vast territory below the radar of the professional music world. Since 1979 he has been traveling through the US and Europe in search of interesting partners and playing situations, and open to whatever might happen. Now living in a small Pennsylvania town, at 71 he is still the "Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation," as Davey Williams called him back in the 80s. And he is still inspiring players outside music-school careerdom. Whenever he plays today, all that he has traversed is present, from fiery, breathless free jazz to quiet, breath-filled, and often animalistic sounds. A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king".

Evan Lipson has operated as a musician since adolescence. In addition to WREST, he is currently active with the Normal Love and the Shaking Ray Levis Society. Past units include Satanized, Dynamite Club, Psychotic Quartet, and The Weasel Walter Trio. Lipson has performed throughout North America, as well as Brazil, Taiwan, and Japan. His music has been released on several imprints including SKiN GRAFT, UgEXPLODE, High Two, Public Eyesore, Badmaster, and New Atlantis. He currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he is scheming to actualize an all-in-one dystopian tiki lounge, performance space, mystical grotto, and occult ritual chamber.

Ben Bennett, living most of the time in Columbus Ohio, started playing music as a young child, with an interest in jazz that moved steadily towards the more avant-guarde, then to free jazz, and onward into the world of free-improv. Using extended techniques involving breath and friction, as well as the time-honored tradition of hitting things with sticks, he plays an evolving pile of frame drums, pre-tuned drum heads, metal things, tubes, and other objects that can be combined and recombined to get a variety of sounds. This set-up lends itself greatly towards being crammed in a backpack, strapped to a bike, dragged along the ground, or thrown down the stairs, generally without physical or psycological damage. Recent projects besides Wrestinclude: bst.cr - trio with Ryan Jewell and Wilson Shook, Rotty What - trio with Jack Wright and John M Bennett; Central Ohio War Coalition - with Mike Shiflet, Joe Panzner, and others; duos with Ryan Jewell, Jack Callahan, and Ben Hall; and solo performances.

o Contestants perform a song as chosen by a guest judge(s).

* ROUND 3: PDNMZ: AMEN TALENT SHOWCASE

o Contestants show off their hidden talents….with some “help” (^_^).

o Contestants get a crash course Asian MV dance lesson.

There will be 4 very special judges, all experts in their fields, adding their own brand of “constructive criticism” to the mix. Scores will be based on a combination of a judge’s numeric evaluation & audience support/applause. Reasons why a contestant’s score can drop include, but are not limited to, the song not being in an Asian language, using lyrics when not permitted to do so, non-compliance with time limits, & lack of stage presence. Upon conclusion of the “TAKII 17 Show”, the fans in attendance will choose who they believe should be crowned the ultimate winner. Then, the judges will add up their scores & declare who THEY think should the the “Show”‘s winner. In the event that the audience & judges disagree on a winner, a super-secret & dramatic OMAKE ROUND will commence to break the tie. Once an “Asian Karaoke Idol Invitational 17 Show” Champion is crowned, the winner shall receive some sweet swag from this season’s sponsors/affiliates & get the opportunity to perform during our “Makenai: Fusion Charity Benefit Concert”! Last Otaku Standing

In Japan, it’s known as “Isu Tori Game”. In Thailand, it’s known as “Kao’ee Dontri”. In America, it’s known as “Musical Chairs”. At TAKII 17, its fans will know it as “Last Otaku Standing”, our extreme twist on a tried & true classic game of epic proportions! Participants will be in it for themselves, as they each bring their #1 Contender’s Passes & a seat around the Main Stage — each seat will have, underneath it, an especially-hilarious, musically-related task. Before the music starts, a seat will be randomly pulled, meaning someone will be left without a chair (DUH, lol). When the music starts, everyone will be walking around the chair, jockeying for position by any means necessary — as when the music stops, everyone music immediately sit down, with the person left out being asked to walk away, empty-handed. This cycle repeats itself until there is 1 chair left & that last person must perform that special task under their chair! In a special twist of events, the TAKII fans in attendance will then judge if they adequately accomplished the mysterious task & should win, or if everyone who previously got knocked out should get the prize instead!! So, just who will be crowned TAKII 17′s “Last Otaku Standing” Champ? I guess you’ll just have to wait & see…. ^_*.

OTA-RAVE-PONMZ:AMEN LIVE

There is only 1 way to cap off a perfect weekend & end a fusion festival such as TAKII 17, & that is to bask in the afterglow of our awesome “Ota-Rave ~PDNMZ: Asian Multimedia Entertainment Network (AMEN) LiVE~”! If you are familiar with the rave from other previous live PDNMZ DJ-ed events, then you know that this is 1 dance that you know you aren’t going to wanna miss! Guest DJs will be spinning some of the hottest tracks from the continent of Asia, as well as taking some of your live playlist requests. TAKII guests, performers, & fans-alike will rave with glo-sticks, dance, release their inhibitions, & express themselves in extreme TAKII fashion. Throw in the dance craze known as “TAKII Rhythm D-Generates” & we have ourselves the making of a fabulous fusion-oriented festivity!

Get up in front of all of your friends, or random strangers (^_^), & sing to your hearts content, sans heartache! “Say WTF Karaoke” is a spin-off from the wildly popular MTV show that brought vocal joy & general craziness from the shores of Cancun, Mexico to Ocean City, MD, & points all over the world. You may provide your own songs, or you can rely on The Asian Karaoke Idol Invitational’s massive library of Asian-themed music, consisting of hundreds of thousands of songs (Asian Pop standards, anime, video game, etc.) to choose from! At TAKII 17, its fans will know it as “Last Otaku Standing”, our extreme twist on a tried & true classic game of epic proportions! Participants will be in it for themselves, as they each bring their #1 Contender’s Passes & a seat around the Main Stage — each seat will have, underneath it, an especially-hilarious, musically-related task. Before the music starts, a seat will be randomly pulled, meaning someone will be left without a chair (DUH, lol). When the music starts, everyone will be walking around the chair, jockeying for position by any means necessary — as when the music stops, everyone music immediately sit down, with the person left out being asked to walk away, empty-handed. This cycle repeats itself until there is 1 chair left & that last person must perform that special task under their chair! In a special twist of events, the TAKII fans in attendance will then judge if they adequately accomplished the mysterious task & should win, or if everyone who previously got knocked out should get the prize instead!! So, just who will be crowned TAKII 17′s “Last Otaku Standing” Champ? I guess you’ll just have to wait & see…. ^_*.

There is only 1 way to cap off a perfect weekend & end a fusion festival such as TAKII 17, & that is to bask in the afterglow of our awesome “Ota-Rave ~PDNMZ: Asian Multimedia Entertainment Network (AMEN) LiVE~”! If you are familiar with the rave from other previous live PDNMZ DJ-ed events, then you know that this is 1 dance that you know you aren’t going to wanna miss! Guest DJs will be spinning some of the hottest tracks from the continent of Asia, as well as taking some of your live playlist requests. TAKII guests, performers, & fans-alike will rave with glo-sticks, dance, release their inhibitions, & express themselves in extreme TAKII fashion. Throw in the dance craze known as “TAKII Rhythm D-Generates” & we have ourselves the making of a fabulous fusion-oriented festivity!

Get up in front of all of your friends, or random strangers (^_^), & sing to your hearts content, sans heartache! “Say WTF Karaoke” is a spin-off from the wildly popular MTV show that brought vocal joy & general craziness from the shores of Cancun, Mexico to Ocean City, MD, & points all over the world. You may provide your own songs, or you can rely on The Asian Karaoke Idol Invitational’s massive library of Asian-themed music, consisting of hundreds of thousands of songs (Asian Pop standards, anime, video game, etc.) to choose from! Tara Burke/Rosie Langabeer Duo

Kuupuu (Finland):

The solo project of Jonna Karanka. She is a self-taught musician and visual artist from Finland who inhabits a semi-magical world where the mundane and the mysterious meet and make wonderful music together. Using tapes and loops, instruments both traditional and modern, Kuupuu's blend of low-tech electroacoustics and high-north songcraft is charming, surprising and unique. She's been involved in such psyche/improv/neo-folk groups as Hertta Lussu Ässä, Avarus, The Anaksimandros, Kukkiva Poliisi, Hockey Night, Olimpia Splendid, Way Of The Cross, Trio Jäätelö etc. Kuupuu plays partly improvised spooky boogie with tapes, loops, samples, beats, keyboards, effects and voices. Karanka has performed music in such places as Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Anthology Film Archives and Issue Project Room in New York, Stockholm's Culture House and the Flow Festival in Helsinki. Kuupuu has released records from 2003 onwards on such labels as Dekorder, Time-Lag Records, Cabin Floor Esoterica, Threshold Tapes and Foxy Digitalis. 

Tsembla (Finland):Tsembla is the musical work of Marja Johansson, a Swedish-Finnish artist living and working in Turku, Finland. Utilizing a wide range of instruments, electronics, objects and samples, the music of Tsembla rides on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms, abstract voices and mutating textures, crossbreeding the known and the imaginary. Nouskaa henget (New Images, 2013) is her third release, after the 7" Tuplafiesta (Vauva, 2009) and the LP Fauna (Ikuisuus, 2011). Loosely assembled, rough edged compositions, rich in details, come together into odd instrumental miniatures in an almost-pop format, venturing into fourth world territory from a lattering, wheezing and boiling DIY kitchen. 

Tara Burke (Pennsylvania):"Fursaxa is Tara Burke. Formerly a member of the Silbreeze band UN, Tara started her Fursaxa project in 1999 after UN disbanded. Since then Fursaxa has released seven full length albums on the Acid Mothers Temple label, Ecstatic Peace, Time Lag, Eclipse, Last Visible Dog, and ATP. In addition there have been 3 self released CD-Rs and a CD on the her own Sylph recordings. In addition to recording, Fursaxa has played live music at venues in the US, UK, and Europe, touring with Bardo Pond, Black Forest/Black Sea, Christina Carter, Jack Rose, Spires That in The Sunset Rise, and Brightblack Morning Light, to name a few. Over the last couple of years Fursaxa has been collaborating more and more with other musicians as well. Espers member Helena Espvall and Tara have a duo called Anahita, and Sharron Kraus and Tara have the duo Tau Emerald. And in September of 2006 Fursaxa became part of "The Valerie Project", which was a live soundtrack for the 1970 Czech film "Valerie and her Week of Wonders".

Tonight's show is the debut of a new duo of Tara Burke and multi - instrumentalist Rosie Langabeer.

Rosie Langabeer (Philadelphia):Rosie Langabeer is an award wining composer, experimental musician and instigator with a taste for things that teeter on the intersection of the serious and the absurd. Langabeer composes regularly for theatre, dance and musical ensembles of various sizes and has performed extensively in NZ and internationally throughout the USA (2010 - 2013), the UK (2013), Mexico City (2010) and France (2005). Highly sought after for interdisciplinary creative arts projects, Langabeer's compositional approach approach is responsive to the unique skills and qualities of her collaborators. Her methods are experimental with a large focus on social dynamics and improvisation; catalyzing local music communities and enhancing the development of new work. Langabeer has received numerous commissions including the Bowerbird Sound Sculpture Commission for Design Philadelphia (2012) and Wilma Theatre/Ballet X Commission for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (2011). Recent festival appearances include Bowerbird's John Cage Festival (USA, 2013), Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (2011, 2013). Her list of collaborators include: Pig Iron Theatre Company (USA), Matthew Neenan and BalletX (USA), Neil Feather (USA), Elliot Levine (USA), Jack Wright (USA), Bowerbird (USA), No Face Performance Group (USA), Subcircle Dance Theatre (USA), Awkward Productions, Ake Ake Theatre Company, Alyx Duncan, Jeff Henderson, Briar March, Carol Brown, Chris O'Connor and Jenny MacArthur.

"Queerness abides in the refusal to preserve, in the willingness to end the space of ruinous, risky anonymity, to let sound pull us with it into the black hole of an experience that is not yet stable." ~ Drew Daniel ALL SOUND IS QUEER is envisioned as both a response and continuation of Drew Daniel's eponymous essay from the November 2011 edition of the British music magazine The Wire. The essay turns on its head the idea that GLBTQ identity can or should be built around identifiable "queer" musical forms such as Lady Gaga, vintage house, gay music festivals, or riotgrrl punk. Daniel instead posits an much more subversive approach wherein the experience of "sound" by nature of its unusual form can "queer" any "subject" away from his/her/their mainstream goals and into a more generative world of unknowns, ambivalence, creative exploration, and alternatives to a normative aesthetic embrace. For those who have found "sound" to be a profoundly rich tunnel to embracing an outsider stance many times imposed by normative musical practices, the article provokes a desire for response and further exploration using the concept of "queerness" as an entry point for all radical sound practices. Curated by sound artist and film maker Catherine Pancake, the program will include texts, live performance, readings, and commissioned sound works by a variety of artists who embrace issues of identity politics in experimental music, and also are known for "queering sound" regardless of announced or implied identity. Keir Neuringer is a musician and interdisciplinary artist who is involved in creative arts communities in Poland, Holland, and the US. He has cultivated a personal and intensely physical approach to saxophone improvisation, plays analogue electronics and Farfisa organ, and sings and narrates text. After training as a composer and jazz saxophonist in the US, he spent two years on a Fulbright research grant in Krakow. He then moved to The Hague, where he spent eight years, curating performative audiovisual art and earning a masters degree from the experimental ArtScience Institute. He lives in Philadelphia and continues to travel widely to present his work, collaborating closely with Rafal Mazur, Ensemble Klang, and Julius Masri, among many others.Megan McShea is a writer and poet currently residing in Baltimore. Her practice is firmly rooted in avant garde explorations of sound poetics and abstract text with high visceral effects. Her recent collection "A Mountain City of Toad Splendor" was released by Publishing Genius in 2012.John Eaton is a resident of Baltimore, MD. He is active in the experimental music/writing, queer, art, and disco scenes. He has performed as part of local arts festivals “Transmodern” and “High Zero.” Since 200? he has been a member of the performance collective Geodesic Gnome. In 2013 he curated the “Blaster’s Baltimore Years” exhibition (a retrospective of some of the works of Blaster Al Ackerman) at The Current Space in Baltimore, MD. Otherwise he DJ’s a monthly local drag show at the Triple L Bar; dispatches art truckers far and wide; and attempts to tread lightly on the earth. Jules Gimbroneis a composer and artist who now lives in Los Angeles, CA. Jules approaches sound and composition through the lens of architectural, sculptural and choreographic interplay. Jules attempts to erect system and structures, which are conceptually sound but simultaneously house their inevitable demise and fallibility, specifically within the multiple failures and queerings of the performative body. Jules co-created, and curates Pack Projects, an art-music collective based in New York City and Los Angeles, who in September 2013 released its latest project: a compilation LP, book and digital download titled FAULT LINES. Jules’ work has been shown at such spaces as VOX Populi, Human Resources LA, ISSUE Project Room, Spectrum, 3LD Art & Technology Center, Bodega Gallery, MOMA PS 1, Socrates Sculpture Park, Galapagos Art Space, The Performance Project, and Cameo Gallery. Jules is currently experimenting at CalARTS, studying with Michael Pisaro and pursuing an MFA in Composition. {packprojects.us} Drew Daniel is one half of Matmos with MC Schmidt. He is a prolific and well-known musician as well as a tenured professor of English at Johns Hopkins University. His writings in magazines, journals, and academic book publications have inspired popular creative and academic thought nationally and internationally.

Since its beginning, the 40th Street Summer Series has enlivened the 40th Street corridor (now home to Distrito, HipCityVeg, RAVE Cinema, Ben & Jerry’s, and more) during the typically slow summer months by increasing patronage at nearby retailers and building upon the existing vibrancy of 40th Street, while providing entertaining, enriching and safe outlets for families, visitors and students.
