a two-part Theatre of the Oppressed workshop
2 Mondays: Nov 25 and Dec 2
6:45–9:15 p.m.
Tuition: $15-$35 sliding scale (work-trade also available)
Limited space—Pre-register via "tophilly@gmail.com"
Theatre of the Oppressed uses group games and techniques to dramatize our world as it is, and then create models for how we’d like it to be.
This 2-part workshop will focus on transition—both in our society and in ourselves—and how these transitions relate to shifts in power, privilege, oppression and liberation. Some such transitions could include:
A person who develops and adapts to a disability.
A child becoming an adult, then a parent, and then a grandparent.
A family whose economic status changes with time and circumstances.
A neighborhood being built, populated, abandoned, and repopulated.
A person whose sexual and/or gender identities go through shifts.
An individual whose identity is perceived differently depending on what group that person is associating with.
Participants will find common ground through sharing and enacting stories, then the group will reshape these scenarios into new possibilities. On the days between the two sessions, we’ll do some reading and a little writing to deepen and support our work as a group.
To attend this 2-part workshop, email "tophilly@gmail.com" or call 215-730-0982. Tuition is sliding scale, $15-$35. Work-trade is available upon request.

Bushman's Revenge
Even Hermansen, guitars
Rune Nergaard, bass
Gard Nilssen, drums
Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the Philadelphia debuts of Bushman’s Revenge and Cortex, two fiery groups hailing from Norway.
"Bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Gard Nilssen chase Hermansen's impulses as if Jitterbug was a Marshall-amp version of John Coltrane's Interstellar Space." -Rolling Stone
Bushman’s Revenge is a trio consisting of Shining guitarist Even Helte Hermansen, bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Gard Nilssen. Since 2009, they have released five albums on the Rune Grammofon label and their latest studio album, A Little Bit Of Big Bonanza, was met with critical praise across the board. Jazzwise magazine likened them to “Jeff Beck being backed by Elvin Jones,” and describes guitarist Hermansen as “reveling in glorious post-Hendrix overdrive that combines jazz inventiveness with crunchy attack.” Equal parts Black Sabbath and Albert Ayler.
Cortex
Thomas Johansson, trumpet
Kristoffer Berre Alberts, saxophone
Ola Høyer, double-bass
Gard Nilssen, drums
Cortex was founded in 2007 by trumpeter Thomas Johansson with saxophonist Kristoffer Alberts, bassist Ola Høyer and drummer Gard Nilssen. They are a band with abundant energy, in the footprints of giants such as Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and John Zorn. Eyal Hareuveni of All About Jazz has described their latest release on Gigafon Records, Göteborg, as “ establishing Cortex as one of the greatest bands currently working in Norway”, also including that “the band's camaraderie excels with telepathic, tight interplay.”
All members share a common background in jazz studies from Trondheim, Norway, and they are active in a number of other ensembles such as the Mathias Eick Quintet, Saka, Friends & Neighbors, All Included, AKODE and The Heat Death.

The 14th Annual
Year-End Cabaret
& Cheap Art Bazaar
with performers from Philly, Baltimore and Brattleboro
Friday & Saturday Dec 6 & 7, 2013
Cheap Art at 7:30 • Cabaret at 8:00
Every winter Puppet Uprising reflects on the past and forecasts the future with its famed Year-End Cabaret, a cavalcade of visual and stage artists making movement, music and mischief with puppets and other performing objects. This year we've culled collaborators from up and down the East Coast for two nights of fun at the Rotunda in West Philly.
The Cause Company (Baltimore puppeteer Valeska Populoh with composer/musician Jonah Beram) stitches together 19th century histories, photographs, songs and sounds from immigrant textile workers in “The Garment Worker’s Tale”.
Vermont-based artist/musician Jonas Fricke appears as one-man-radical-courage-band "If Not I Than Who Then?" With drumset poetics and loop pedal in tow, Jonas manifests a magical mix of futuristic dance beats as a backdrop for old-timey painted banner shows.
Members of the Medium Theatre Company(Mason Rosenthal with Puppet Uprising M.C. Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews) pit the smarts civilized man against the untamed antics of a feral child in their extremely scientific demonstration, “Nature vs. Nurture”.
Philly artists Jen Brown and Alice Yorke each make their Uprising debuts with new solo works. Also appearing are the marionettes of Michael Lamison (from Baltimore’s Black Cherry Puppet Theatre), an (other) aqueme tribute to the Smiths, and our annual extraterrestrial encounter with the Great Quentini and his entourage of alien ideas.
Cabaret starts at 8:00pm, but do come early to reserve your seat and to check out the Cheap Art Bazaar! Need more info? Call: 267-909-2633.
Admission is FREE. Donations encouraged.

Beck/Fields
Delicate Monster
Tom Carter
Delicate Monster Both Art Cohen (guitar) and Steve Bowman (synths) love to arg ue about what makes g ood music-with each other and with anybody else who feels as passionat ely as the y do. Through Delicate Monster, they make their arguments
in sound.
When Art and Steve disagree with each other, it's a consequence of their divergent musical backgrounds. Art is rooted in psychedelic guitar,Berlin-school spacemusic, and American folk. He's been a fixture on the
Philly music scene for 25 years-you may know him as half of the duo The Ministry of Inside Things (with Chuck van Zyl). Steve has a musty degree in Music from Harvard, where he first encountered the Buchla. He draws his influence from classical music and radical composers like Ives, Stockhausen, Subotnick, Monteverdi, Bach, and Ligeti. (Their musical tastes do overlap with the Grateful Dead and Captain Beefheart). Art pushes Steve to let the music be clear and simple and to groove on the repetition. Steve pushes Art to surrender to his weird side and luxuriate in the complexity of counterpoint and the thrill of abject dissonance. Playing together off and on for 20 years, Art and Steve have managed to merge their stylistic differences into a novel musical language that is Delicate Monster.
Beck-Fields - Composer Jeremy D. Beck brings his ethereal aesthetics through guitar, piano, and voice to the electronic genius of William Fields, a veteran in atmospheric and dance works alike. Together they recognize no boundaries of style or genre. The duo is always expanding upon architectures and projections of sound, afforded by their near limitless collection of instruments and knobs. The result is a vast spread of original and unique scenery through the chance realm of improvisation.
Tom Carter - Tom Carter's electric guitar work weaves spare strands of melody into towering long-form drones, sculpting a rich landscape from both high-volume grit and charged silence. Although best known for his work with iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991, Carter has recently focused on his eponymous duo with No Neck Blues Band co-founder Pat Murano; Sarin Smoke, his duo with Pete Swanson; and his solo performances and recordings, which have increasingly featured visual components - including collaborations with filmmakers Martha Colburn and Margarida Garcia.
