The premier of a new improvising trio, Hirsch/Meneses/Pride, will take place @ The Rotunda. Featuring an unusual combination of voice (Award winning NYC Vocalist Shelley Hirsch) and two percussionists (Jim Meneses and Mike Pride), the evenings emphasis will be on the lack of hierarchy, demanding from each player versatility, sensitivity, and musical equality. Dynamic range, humor, and stop - on - a - dime precision can be expected from these seasoned and experienced players. Expect an evening of unexpected treasures, surprises, and integrity from this unusual and fascinating combo.
SHELLEY HIRSCH
Vocalist, Composer, and Storyteller
Shelley Hirsch is an award winning, critically acclaimed vocalist, composer, and storyteller whose mostly solo compositions, staged multimedia works, improvisations, radio plays, installations and collaborations have been produced and presented in concert halls, clubs, festivals, theaters, museums, galleries and on radio, film and television on 5 continents. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, fellowships and residencies in the music composition, electronic music, performance, new forms, multidisciplinary work categories, including 4 from NYFA; a Creative Capital grant; the prestigious DAAD residency in Berlin; The Ucross/Alpert residency Prize; 2 NEA grants and a record 5 Artist In Residencies from Harvestworks Studio PASS. The radio version of her autobiographical musical piece "O Little Town of East New York" won a 1st Prize in the Prix Futura International Media Competition in Berlin. Hirsch has taught workshops, given seminars and private lessons internationally.
JIM MENESES
DRUMS AND PERCUSSION
Jim Meneses has been working as a percussionist professionally since 1975. He has worked in projects with many established players in and from the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. His playing can be described as genre shifting, moving delicately from improvisation and sound design to aggressive rock and metal influencesd. His current groups include Ottokar, a progressive rock group from Philadelphia, Modiano USA, a vehicle for soundtracks and ambient work of various kinds, and the new trio Hirsch/Meneses/Pride.
MIKE PRIDE
Percussionist • Composer • Vocalist • Visual Artist
Born and raised in Southern Maine, but based out of New York City since 2000, Mike Pride currently leads From Bacteria To Boys, and the 7-drummer installation-band Drummer's Corpse. Both record for AUM Fidelity. Pride is renowned for his ability to excel in a wide range of genres and ensembles. He has worked with everyone from improvised music icon Anthony Braxton to punk legends Millions Of Dead Cops, toured extensively on four continents and appeared on more than 85 recordings. Pride’s versatility doesn’t end with his eclectic résumé as a popular sideman and leader/co-leader of many active ensembles spanning the worlds of modern-jazz, avant-rock, noise and doom metal improv. He is also a busy educator and clinician, a soundtrack composer for TV shows, video games and independent films, and an experienced and exhibited visual artist.
