The Gate is Dan Peck (tuba, composition), Tom Blancarte (upright bass), and Brian Osborne(percussion) – Moving fluidly between freely improvised music and composition, tuba and bass combine to erode conventional notions of melody and harmony, marching to the rhythm of decaying ship hulls falling against each other, metal scraping against metal. Incomprehensible languages combine with layers of viscous noise to create a suffocating and unrelenting texture of doom.

Ombient is the moniker under which Mike Hunter performs his ambient/drone/experimental music. Ombient's ambient/drone/electronic music, being of a live and improvisational nature, is representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer. Mike is also the host of the radio show Music With Space on WPRB 103.3 FM out of Princeton, NJ Performing with Ombient for this show is Chuck Van Zyl. Chuck is best known as host of STAR'S END (WXPN's renowned radio program of spacemusic dreamscapes) and as coordinator of The Gatherings (Philadelphia's premiere concert series of innovative music), Chuck van Zyl has also been making his own amazing and unique style of electronic music since 1983.
Michael Rabito is a musician that has been discovering his propensity for the fusion of opposites for many years now. He started taking the electric guitar seriously when he was eleven and was playing out professionally by the time he left for college with his band in Vermont. After a move to Boston the bringing together of the free flow of improvisation and the rigidity of structure increased as he played with a group of Berklee College of Music musicians for about five years. During this time his interest in loops, synthesizers and keyboards began to grow and helped to fuse space, harmony, action and dissonance. This has all culminated with his latest project back in the Princeton area called Manifested; A progressive fusion of funk, rock, dance and ambient music that has brought the group to New York, Boston, Philadelphia and many points between within their first year. They can be heard here with more information at their facebook page. Michael also performs interactive ambient space music with local visual artist Ted Klett. They will be preforming at Art All Night on June 15th -16th and can be heard at on the AutonomicDrone soundcloud page.
The Time Merchant - With over 50 albums, the ever prolific Time Merchant is on a constant quest to explore sound. The first album appeared in 1994. Little else is known as The Time Merchant tends to keep out of the public eye, preferring instead to hide away in the recording studio (the wave chamber), working methodically to create the next sound world. Works have explored several genres, including: experimental, dark ambient, atmospheric. pure electronic, and various combinations.

Featuring puppets, live music and a script that runs the gamut from dark comedy to pulp melodrama, Rails will be performed in Philadelphia at the Rotunda on Tuesday, November 12th and Wednesday, November 13th (both shows at 7pm).
Inspired by the wise guys and foxy dames of film noir, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and the words of Pablo Neruda, Rails tells the story of honest, reliable and a-bit-slouched Wilbur Burland. After uncovering crooked dealings perpetrated by his straight-spined employer down at the rail yard, Wilbur’s comfortable life begins to fall more and more into disarray. He loses his job, his son insists that trains can fly and his wife begins more and more to resemble a broom. The only person he can turn to now is a mysterious femme fatale, who has her own hidden agenda.
Found objects such as bowling pins, hand puppets and actors comprise the cast of Rails. First performed in the 2009 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the show was hailed as a hit by the Philadelphia Inquirer and City Paper, who said it was a ‘fiendishly satisfying noir comedy/thriller’ with an ‘inventive blending of puppetry and live action’ and a ‘script that has a witty way with genre tropes and comic banter, and smoky, spot-on scoring from local prog-jazz combo Upholstery’.
Rails features a live soundtrack provided by the music ensemble Upholstery. Upholstery is comprised of an array of Philadelphia musical heavyweights, boasting an impressive collective resume with roots in experimental jazz, progressive rock and Hassidic doom metal. The music composed for Rails is inspired by clanging steel, tritones and the works of Scriabin, which creates a smoky, sultry backdrop for the production.
This Philadelphia performance marks the beginning of a 12-day tour of this production, which will include stops in Brooklyn, Baltimore, Asheville, Atlanta and culminates with four shows in the New Orleans Fringe Festival.
Transmissions Theatre creates transcendently bizarre stories that span worlds from the microscopic to the cosmic in epic narratives that feature strong, interesting female characters. Their productions rest on foundations of cardboard and chicken-wire, wholeheartedly embracing a dark, humorous and quirky aesthetic that incorporates puppetry, animation and live music. They have created three original pieces for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, including Rails in 2009, Water Bears in Space in 2011 and Iminami in 2012.

ABOUT THE EVENT
This performance celebrates the release of Chris Forsyth's Solar Motel, released November 2013 on the Paradise of Bachelors label. It is also the premiere performance of the Solar Motel video, created by artist Maria Dumlao to accompany the record in it's entirety, featuring live video work by the artist. Forsyth's Solar Motel Band - guitarist Paul Sukeena, bassist Peter Kerlin, and drummer Steven Urgo - will be joined by longtime Forsyth collaborator and Kansas City native Shawn Edward Hansen on organ for this show, recreating his role in the recording of the Solar Motel.
Opening up the evening will be Mind Over Mirrors, the solitary reeling of American harmoniumist/electronicist Jaime Fennelly. Utilizing an Indian pedal harmonium, oscillators, tape delays, and an assortment of synthesizing processors, Fennelly bends slowly-building, repetitive melodies into massive sonic mountains. When the Rest Are Up at Four is the fourth Mind Over Mirrors album following releases on Digitalis, Hands In the Dark, & Aguirre/Gift Tapes.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chris Forsyth's hypnotic compositions assimilate art-rock textures with vernacular American influences. Long active in the international underground, he's released a series of acclaimed records as a solo artist that demonstrate a resolute engagement in making corporeal/cerebral music that transcends such subterranean realms, reaching instead for a bleeding-edge physicality and lyricism heavily influenced by his private studies with Television guitarist Richard Lloyd. The fascinating tension manifest in Forsyth's music between often long-form, rarefied abstraction and percolating rhythms and rock/roots structures animates notable recent works such as his 2011 LP Paranoid Cat on Family Vineyard (rated a "kinetic masterpiece" by Pitchfork) and Early Astral, a 2012 duo LP with Koen Holtkamp (Mountains) on Blackest Rainbow which was memorably characterized as "80's Garcia jamming at Epcot" by one unnamed record exec.
His 2012 Kenzo Deluxe LP on Northern Spy, a debt heavily owed to Exile on Main Street, has been described by Aquarium Drunkard as "sublime"; the Philadelphia City Paper deems it "resonant [and] incisive... a cosmic abstraction of the American guitar tradition, reducing blues, rock, folk and improvisation into their spare, hypnotic base elements." The Wire praises Forsyth as "an erudite and farsighted guitar stylist, mapping a path that's hip and scholarly in equal measure." Uncut calls him "an emergent master.
Forsyth has toured throughout Europe and the U.S., sharing stages with such like-minded travelers as Steve Gunn, Sic Alps, Endless Boogie, Grouper, Loren Connors, William Tyler, and Rhys Chatham. Prior to his relocation to Philadelphia in 2009, he was a (founding) member of Brooklyn-based Peeesseye. He's also collaborated with a diverse range of artists including singer/songwriter Meg Baird (appearing on her 2011 Drag City release Seasons on Earth), Japanese guitarist/boogie master Tetuzi Akiyama, trumpeter Nate Wooley, and choreographers Miguel Gutierrez, RoseAnne Spradlin, and Meg Foley, and is a recipient of a 2011 Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Every 3rd Saturday of the month PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their work in a safe, uncensored environment. Young people from all over Philadelphia come to express themselves in front of a supportive audience of over 125+ people where they can grab the microphone and be heard!

PYPM YOUTH SLAM TEAM & BRAVE NEW VOICES
Teens who participate in the slams earn points to qualify for the semi-final and final slams to make the PYPM Slam Team.
Each year PYPM sends a Youth Slam Team to represent Philadelphia at The Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival to compete against over 50 other poetry teams from around the world. The festival is held in various cities across the U.S giving teens an opportunity to travel, from Los Angeles to Chicago. Youth poets earn their spot on the team by competing in Youth Night Slams. PYPM won first place at Brave New Voices in 2011 and 2007.

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

The Big Yiddish Dance Party returns to The Rotunda for a second year of awesome klezmer fun! ! Local klezmer Dan Blacksberg brings together some of the best voices in Yiddish music anywhere in the world to Philadelphia for a night of traditional klezmer dancing and fun. Reuniting last year's band, Blacksberg will be joined by rising klezmer clarinet star Michael Winograd, accordionist Lauren Brody, and drummer Dave Licht (Founding member of the Klezmatics). The dancing will be led by the inimitable and inviting Steve Weintraub, who recently made the move to Philadelphia. At their best, klezmer music and dance inform and feed each other to create an energetic and joyous experience. We wish to invite you in for a magical evening of wild and fun klezmer for all peoples!
Bios:
Dan Blacksberg is also one of the few musicians in the world who performs and teaches traditional klezmer on the trombone. Recognized as a master of the traditional trombone style, he can often be found performing with the field’s top artists. He is a founding member of Alan Bern’s The Other Europeans, and co-leads the klezmer power trio Leviticus with Michael Winograd and Tyshawn Sorey. He has also performed and recorded with such as Frank London, Adrienne Cooper, Michael Winograd, Daniel Kahn, and Elaine Hoffman-Watts. Dan has taught and performed in festivals all over the world, such as the Klezkamp, Klezkanada, Lowell Folk Festival, the Krakow Fesitval of Jewish Culture, and Yiddish Summer Weimar, and has been an artist-in-residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Clarinetist, composer, and producer Michael Winograd is one of the most sought out Klezmer musicians today. He performs internationally with his own groups, the Yiddish Art Trio (with Patrick Farrell on Accordion and Bassist/Vocalist Benjy Fox-Rosen), Tarras Band, Yiddish Princess and with Socalled, Budowitz, Frank London and others. He teaches regularly at KlezKamp, KlezKanada and other Jewish music workshops throughout North America and Europe. He has produced albums by Adrienne Cooper and Susan Leviton, and was the music director for Josh Dolgin’s Yiddish musical, Tales from Odessa. His newest album “Storm Game” was released on Golden Horn Records in 2012.
Born on Governor's Island, Bar Mitzvahed in the Bronx, and living now in Philadelphia, Steve Weintraub received his dance training in Manhattan with Alvin Ailey and Erick Hawkins, among others. He is in international demand as a teacher of traditional Yiddish dance at festivals and workshops including Klezkamp, Klezkanada, and festivals in Krakow, Furth, Paris and London to name a few. Steven delights in introducing people to the figures, steps and stylings of the dances that belong to Klezmer music. He has often been called the “Pied Piper of Yiddish Dance”; his years of experience leading and researching Yiddish dance allow him to quickly weave dancers and music together in astonishing ways. Young and old, from all backgrounds, find it easy to share in the joy of Yiddish dancing.

Theatre of the Oppressed uses group games and techniques to dramatize our world as it is, and then create models for how we’d like it to be.
This 2-part workshop will focus on transition—both in our society and in ourselves—and how these transitions relate to shifts in power, privilege, oppression and liberation. Some such transitions could include:
A person who develops and adapts to a disability.
A child becoming an adult, then a parent, and then a grandparent.
A family whose economic status changes with time and circumstances.
A neighborhood being built, populated, abandoned, and repopulated.
A person whose sexual and/or gender identities go through shifts.
An individual whose identity is perceived differently depending on what group that person is associating with.
Participants will find common ground through sharing and enacting stories, then the group will reshape these scenarios into new possibilities. On the days between the two sessions, we’ll do some reading and a little writing to deepen and support our work as a group.

The premier of a new improvising trio, Hirsch/Meneses/Pride, will take place @ The Rotunda. Featuring an unusual combination of voice (Award winning NYC Vocalist Shelley Hirsch) and two percussionists (Jim Meneses and Mike Pride), the evenings emphasis will be on the lack of hierarchy, demanding from each player versatility, sensitivity, and musical equality. Dynamic range, humor, and stop - on - a - dime precision can be expected from these seasoned and experienced players. SHELLEY HIRSCH
Vocalist, Composer, and Storyteller
Shelley Hirsch is an award winning, critically acclaimed vocalist, composer, and storyteller whose mostly solo compositions, staged multimedia works, improvisations, radio plays, installations and collaborations have been produced and presented in concert halls, clubs, festivals, theaters, museums, galleries and on radio, film and television on 5 continents. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, fellowships and residencies in the music composition, electronic music, performance, new forms, multidisciplinary work categories, including 4 from NYFA; a Creative Capital grant; the prestigious DAAD residency in Berlin; The Ucross/Alpert residency Prize; 2 NEA grants and a record 5 Artist In Residencies from Harvestworks Studio PASS. The radio version of her autobiographical musical piece "O Little Town of East New York" won a 1st Prize in the Prix Futura International Media Competition in Berlin. Hirsch has taught workshops, given seminars and private lessons internationally.
JIM MENESES
DRUMS AND PERCUSSION
Jim Meneses has been working as a percussionist professionally since 1975. He has worked in projects with many established players in and from the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. His playing can be described as genre shifting, moving delicately from improvisation and sound design to aggressive rock and metal influencesd. His current groups include Ottokar, a progressive rock group from Philadelphia, Modiano USA, a vehicle for soundtracks and ambient work of various kinds, and the new trio Hirsch/Meneses/Pride.
MIKE PRIDE
Percussionist • Composer • Vocalist • Visual Artist
Born and raised in Southern Maine, but based out of New York City since 2000, Mike Pride currently leads From Bacteria To Boys, and the 7-drummer installation-band Drummer's Corpse. Both record for AUM Fidelity. Pride is renowned for his ability to excel in a wide range of genres and ensembles. He has worked with everyone from improvised music icon Anthony Braxton to punk legends Millions Of Dead Cops, toured extensively on four continents and appeared on more than 85 recordings. Pride’s versatility doesn’t end with his eclectic résumé as a popular sideman and leader/co-leader of many active ensembles spanning the worlds of modern-jazz, avant-rock, noise and doom metal improv. He is also a busy educator and clinician, a soundtrack composer for TV shows, video games and independent films, and an experienced and exhibited visual artist.
