Life Begins at Eight-Thirty (1942 / 85 minutes) Ida Lupino lives in a small apartment with her father Monty Woolley who is a celebrated actor done in by drink. When things seem at their nadir, Woolley lands the apt role of “King Lear”. . . AUGUST 8 Side Show (1981 / 98 minutes) A teenage boy runs away from home and joins the circus. There, he witnesses a murder. The Wagons Roll at Night (1941 / 84 minutes) A lion escapes Humphrey Bogart’s carnival and is captured by grocery clerk Eddie Alert whom Bogart brings into the show and eventually makes chief lion tamer. SEPTEMBER 12 West of Zanzibar (1928 / 65 minutes) The ninth collaboration between Lon Chaney and director Tod Browning is a tale of revenge and debasement, wherein an evil English music hall magician is completely devoted to his wife who soon abandons him for an ivory trader. Adventure In Iraq (1943 / 64 minutes) Director D. Ross Lederman’s thriller where five Allied soldiers crash-land in Iraq. They are taken in by a local sheik, but soon begin to suspect that he may not be quite as friendly as he seems to be. OCTOBER 10 The Monster (1925 / 86 minutes) Roland West directs one of the first “mad scientist” films based on a play by Crane Wilbur. West’s movie freely mixes horror and comedy as Lon Chaney uses a “death chair” to transfer the soul of a woman into a man’s body.     • 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM The Freedom Gathering A Frontline Dads Mentoring Fundraiser On Friday, July 12, 2013 @ 7:00 pm, Frontline Dads Mentoring Program will present: “The Freedom Gathering”, a fundraiser featuring art, music, hip-hop and spoken-word poetry. The Freedom Gathering is a fundraiser that provides a positive outlet for youth to express themselves through the arts while promoting the message of peace in the community. This communal celebration of youth will inspire, uplift, inform and mobilize the public on the issue of the need for mentoring and mentors. The Freedom Gathering will also honor “Unsung Heroes” of the community for their contributions, sacrifices, inspiration and leadership. Additionally, an art display and silent auction will feature the works of local visual artists. An open mic will follow. Frontline Dads is an independent, community based non-profit organization that mentors "at-risk" youth. All proceeds will benefit youth programming, summer activities and supplies. Frontline Dads is celebrating its 11th year as a transformative mentoring program in Philadelphia providing service to “at-risk” youth. The mission of Frontline Dads is to facilitate the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and cultural development of “at-risk” youth by providing transformative programming that will empower them to assume leadership positions in their families, and communities. Frontline Dads has been recognized for its work in youth development by the University of Pennsylvania’s African American Resource Center, the Knight Foundation, BMe (Black Male Engagement), and United Way (Philly Roots Felowship). Frontline Dads is a recipient of the Lucien Blackwell Guiding Light Award and has been named by NewsOne as a “Gamechanger” in 2013. Suggested donation is $10 (no one turned away for lack of funds).     • 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Tapestry Entertainment presents a screening of the new film Women's Playground 2013 • 120 minutes These prison inmates are victimized by the system, the guards and by each other. Several women are beaten and raped by other inmates. They face sexual exploitation when the warden and guards bring johns in the prison to pimp the women out. The johns use these women to have their ultimate fantasies played out. But even in prison, these women find friendships, love and marriage. When the life in prison gets to be too hard to endure, eight inmates escape, not knowing that it will take them to even greater dangers and tragedies.

    • 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM Every month PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their work in a safe, uncensored environment. Young people from all over Philadelphia come to express themselves in front of a supportive audience, which includes other young people, mentors, parents, teachers, and community members. Youth Night is a special evening for teens to grab the microphone and be heard! Teens who participate in the monthly slams earn points to qualify for the PYPM Slam Team, which competes at the annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival held in various cities across the U.S with over 50 other youth poetry teams from around the world.
