ThadClar is musician Roycee Martin who has been playing music for over 30 years. Most of that time he was a Bass player playing Blues and Top 40 music. Now days Roycee is very much inspired by ambient/space music. For his latest project “ ThadClad” he draws from elements of analog sequencers and live looping with the ChapmanStick and some effects processing, all mixed and tweaked live. Hunter and Harrison This duo consists of guitarist Mike Hunter (of Ombient and the host of the WPRB radio program Music With Space) and guitarist Harrison McKay (of The Tangent Project) The perform guitar based ambient electronic music using loopers and guitar synthesizers. A Celebration of Film, Culture, and History for all to see!
An Afro-Brazilian Film Festival to break ethnic stereotype and barriers
The Sankofa Association of Roxborough is hosting an Afro-Brazilian
Film Festival--bound to attract Philadelphians from all walks of life. The festival will last over ten hours complete with local vendors and food as well as films relating to
Afro-Brazilian culture. The Philadelphia chapter of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation is scheduled to demonstrate Capoeira, a Brazilian Martial Art with African roots.
Five films are being screened, each one a specific genre, including the award winning capoeira themed action adventure Besouro, with stunts directed by Huan Chiu-Ku (Kill Bill, The Matrix) . There is at least one movie of interest for everyone.
“We were looking for a way to demonstrate the connections that Americans have with people from all over the Americas” says Angela Mohammed, founder of the Sankofa Association of Roxborough. “When people think of Black(s) and Slavery, they only think about the United States. We are never taught that Africans helped shape all of the Americas, this is important because it could help bridge gaps between many ethnic communities here in Philadelphia.”
As of the year 2000, “The City of Neighborhoods” boasts a black population of about 44 percent and a Latino population of 12.5 percent. This includes people from the United States, Caribbean islands, Central and South America, and West Africa. To varying degrees each of these regions has been a point on the Transatlantic Slave trade. Brazil, having received nearly 30 percent of all Africans during this trade, as opposed to 5 percent received by the United States; definitely demonstrates the connections to which Mrs. Mohammed was referring. The metropolitan area could benefit from seeing, feeling, and
tasting those connections. Although the film festival centers on black identity it is not just for people of African descent, it can also attract foodies, music and film lovers, art enthusiasts, students and the passerby. “Everybody is welcome to learn and share the experience” Mrs. Mohammed reaffirms. The film festival coincides with Brazil’s June Festivals, the country’s second largest celebration, after Rio’s Carnival. It is also the weekend before the annual Philadelphia Odunde festival which attracts thousands every year.

The Sankofa Association of Roxborough is a nonprofit community organization whose mission is to promote the education, culture, and history of Africa and the African-American. Founded in 2005, the organization has held many events including Health Screenings, Annual Kwanzaa and Juneteenth celebrations. This will be its first film festival.

Building on the acoustic investigations of his teacher Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of musique concrete, French composer Bernard Parmegiani creates what he calls "acousmatic music" -- a kind of sonic art conceived especially for presentation through loudspeakers, designed to invoke powerful mental images through the pure play of disembodied sound. Parmegiani's 1975 composition De natura sonorum is an unrivaled masterpiece in this genre. Each of the work's 12 movements is an etude in which opposing sonic properties--percussive versus sustained tones, or synthetic versus natural--are played against each other in a highly refined counterpoint of acoustic forms. At once playful and imposing, sensual and cerebral, De natura sonorum leads the listener on a unique exploration of the nature of sound.

The Movement, founded by “UnLitter Us” poet Greg Corbin, provides a safe space for at-risk, empowered youth ages 13-19 to use their voice to promote social change, leadership, cultural diversity, and build self-esteem.

The Highwire Gallery is home to most events that are presented by Fire Museum Presents. Tonight we host a benefit for the gallery at The Rotunda as a gesture of thanks, and to hopefully aid in financial matters!
Archer Spade is the new music collaboration between composer/performers Daniel Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi that seeks to broaden the repertoire and inspire new sonic possibilities for their unlikely instrumentation of trombone and electric guitar. Together, Blacksberg and Millevoi bring unique and versatile vocabularies to contemporary classical music as well as extensive individual experiences that span experimental music, jazz, punk rock, and Jewish music. The duo’s music, formed from over a decade of playing together, propels beyond the boundaries of the classical tradition into a singular body of work that spans the unique breadth of its members personal vocabularies.
Archer Spade has worked with composers Gene Coleman, David Soldier, John DeBlase, and is currently collaborating with Roscoe Mitchell on a trio composition with saxophonist Drew Cecatto, commissioned by Thomas Buckner. The members of Archer Spade work with Electric Simcha, The Other Europeans, Many Arms, and Make A Rising.
Eric Carbonara is a Philadelphia based guitarist, whose search for raw aural expression has led him far and wide – from noise & electro-acoustic music to taking deep root in the bounty of the wooden guitar. Carbonara’s playing draws on the rich musical styles from Andalusian Roma-Flamenco to Hindustani & North African folk to form a kind of exalted pidgin style of playing that covers a wide emotional terrain from meditative calm to restless unease. He has developed a unique idiom of gypsy music for non-existent cultures by combining rogue self-taught, free-form classical and flamenco techniques with those learned from formal studies in India.
His live solo performances range from contemplative acoustic meditations to aggressively loud electric sets; both encompassing Carbonara’s ability to draw the listener in to his world, where his lyrical playing doesn’t just entertain but triggers a myriad of emotional responses. Carbonara has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe promoting his releases on Locust Music, Majumua Music and New American Folk Hero as well as various self-releases for solo guitar and solo upright-chaturangui music,
ALBAN BAILLY (guitar – compositions) is a mulit-faceted instrumentalist who studied composition, jazz and improvisation in France. He performed regularly in Europe before moving to the US in 2005. Alban began his musical path by playing rock in his youth. He moved onto studying Jazz, which opened him to free improvisation in the late nineties. In 2001 he studied Arabic music and oud in Marrakech, Morocco. Alban then moved to Nancy, France, and became an active performer, playing solo and together with performers (Music, Dance, Projections etc ) in Europe.
Currently a resident of Philadelphia, he continues to be in demand and has performed extensively on the east coast. He has been fortunate to play with many wonderful musicians in various settings (Jack Wright, Ron Anderson, Carol Genetti, Fred Lomberg Holm, Alvin Curran, Tony Buck, Jack Wright, Alex Waterman, Martin Tetrault, Eve Risser, Mark Sarich, Helena Espvall, Andrew Drury, and many others). He has been a part of the improvised music scene both in Europe and US performing bowed acoustic guitar and toured the in US and Canada with Jack Wright, Mark Sarich and Heddy Boubaker among others.
Dick Neff - former member of Social Junk, garbage stomp noise pioneers, is one of the fastest drummers you will ever see playing the only circuit bent drum set you could ever imagine. “Dick Neff combined knob twiddling distortion with one man and a drum-set bombast in a way that had me thinking of Lightning Bolt and related noise metal spastics in a good way.”

The Green Tambourine provides musical experiences to children Birth - 10 with classes that engage, educate and inspire. All programs seamlessly integrate leading learning approaches with experiential music and movement techniques. The goal of our programs is not just music education, but an exploration of the world and everything in it through musical means. This integration of approaches to learning strives to develop the whole child and encourage curiosity, excitement and play which ultimately leads to learning.
Musical Playgroups are offered for Infants, 10-23 months, 2&3 year olds and 4&5 year olds with a wide range of themes that feature instruments, songs, movement and activities.
Group Instrumental Lessons will be offered in the Fall for violin and guitar to 6-10 year olds. Classes focus on instrumental skills and musical fundamentals in a unique learning environment that offers opportunities for ensemble playing and performance practice.
Classes are currently offered in 6 week sessions on Fridays starting June 22nd at The Rotunda. Scholarships and discounts are available! If you are interested in weekend classes, please let us know and we will inform you when the classes are ready for registration.

Travis Woodson's Music for Three Guitars
Carl Testa is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, most notably as the bassist in composer Anthony Braxton's groups with whom he's performed throughout the US and internationally. Testa's own compositions have been described as "engaging and unique" (Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery) and "human music, with varied emotions and sublime moments" (Richard Kamins, The Hartford Courant). Testa released his debut album Uncertainty in 2008 and is currently working on his second release. In addition to his own trio with clarinetist Mike McGinnis and percussionist Bill Carbone, he regularly performs with Anthony Braxton's Septet, 12+1tet, and Trillium Orchestra. He also collaborates with vocalist Anne Rhodes, choreographer Rachel Bernsen, and composers Lou Guarino, Brian Parks, Adam Matlock, Nathan Bontrager, and Christopher Riggs. Broadcloth performs improvised music with a nod to various compositional outlets. Using a unique instrumentation of voice, cello and accordion/recorders, the trio plays from notated, graphic, embroidered, and textual scores in addition to completely spontaneous pieces. Without shying away from virtuosity, Broadcloth creates music that reflects the order of composition and the risk of unpredictable musical interactions. Emphasis lies on establishing a holistic sound that favors cooperation over hierarchy.
Music for Three Guitars: Arrangements and Compositions by Travis Woodson - "The music that you'll be hearing is essentially a preview of some material I have worked on for the past year. I basically wanted to come up with a series of compositions and/or arrangements I thought would translate easily for this type of instrumentation, as well as be inquisitive of the sound possibilities. With the aid of Alban Bailey and Nick Millevoi, you will hear music from some of my favorite composers like Ornette Coleman, Morton Feldman, György Ligeti, and in addition, a special piece originally written for solo guitar by Philadelphia's own Eric Slick of Dr. Dog. I will also be sharing a few of my own compositions, including a song I originally wrote for Make a Rising that didn't make the cut. I'm quite fond of how these turned out and would love to share these ideas with everyone as I'm going through this process. Together, we will finally solve the age-old question: How many guitarist does it take to screw in a light bulb?"

(Philadelphia, PA) – University of Pennsylvania, University City District (UCD), and The Rotunda are pleased to announce the 2012 season of the annual 40th Street Summer Series, the free outdoor concert series in West Philadelphia. Scheduled for the fourth Saturdays in June to September, the Summer Series will transform the 40th Street Field into an eclectic international center of sounds and good vibes. These free outdoor performances will feature exceptional internationally-renowned large ensembles including Slavic Soul Party, Sun Ra Arkestra, Adventuredrum, and the Warriors of the Wonderful Sound with Odean Pope and Dave Liebman.
All concerts will be held on the beautiful green space just behind the Walnut Street Free Library at 40th and Walnut Streets beginning at 6pm.
Complimentary (first come, first served) Rita’s Water Ice will also be given out during the performances.
For the June and July Summer Series events, Tsirkus Fotografika (or the "Photographic Circus") will bring their antique mobile portrait studio, offering free antique photos to concertgoers. Using analog film, old-fashioned "hot" lighting, and large format equipment, Tsirkus follows in the footsteps of itinerant photographers who would travel from town to town making portraits on-the-spot.

Slavic Soul Party has created an acoustic mash-up of Balkan and Gypsy sounds, weaving the gospel, techno, funk, dub, jazz and Latin influences of New York’s neighborhoods seamlessly into a Balkan brass setting. SSP’s music has won the ears of fans and musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, and their tunes have been learned by Serbian brass stars Boban Markovic Orkestar and New Orleans funk sensations Galactic, among others. One of the hardest working bands in Brooklyn, SSP performs throughout North America, Europe, Africa and beyond, and have performed at Babylon (Istanbul) with the Karandila Orkestar, at Irving Plaza (New York City) with Gogol Bordello, on the Warped Tour, in Carnegie Hall, in Sing Sing prison, and in virtually every major New York club.

SUN RA ARKESTRA
The Sun Ra Arkestra returns for their third Summer Series appearance with another very rare hometown performance which is sure to have audiences either dancing feverishly or contemplatively traversing the spaceways. Founded in 1958 under the leadership of Sun Ra, the Arkestra pioneered a unique brand of afro-futurism, forging intersecting musical pathways that explore outer space and Egyptian mythology. Drawing on the work of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, the Arkestra are pioneers of the bop-derived avant-garde and collective improvisation. Their work has had tremendous impact on scores of musicians including MC5, Sonic Youth and George Clinton. Following the Arkestra's influential tenures in Chicago and New York City, Sun Ra and the Arkestra relocated to Philadelphia in 1968, where they continue their commitment to the study, research and development of Sun Ra's musical precepts. Following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995, Maestro Marshall Allen (b. 1924) has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere "ghost" band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra's music, as well as composing new music and arrangements for the Arkestra.

Adventuredrum is a new dance band led by Philadelphia composer and percussionist
Christopher Sean Powell, best known for his work in Need New Body and Man Man. This Philadelphia-based project brings together a who’s who of local musicians exploring rhythms constructed from sampled sound, exotic percussion, synthesizers and drum kits. Adventuredrum members include those who have collaborated with the West Philly Orchestra, Fugazi’s Joe Lally, Dirty Projectors, Grandchildren, Pattern is Movement, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and others. Merging new sounds and ideas with traditional drumming, this is a dance band for the future. These are the drums of tomorrow…today!

BOBBY ZANKEL’S WARRIORS OF THE WONDERFUL SOUND FEATURING DAVE LIEBMAN AND ODEAN POPE PERFORMING JOHN COLTRANE’S A LOVE SUPREME
West Philadelphia’s Bobby Zankel was drawn to the saxophone by the thrilling new sounds being explored in the 1960s jazz scene, in particular the music of John Coltrane. He studied with Cecil Taylor, eventually became involved with the avant-garde jazz scene of the early 1970s, performing alongside the likes of bassist William Parker and violinist Billy Bang. Zankel is now one of the leading lights of the local jazz community. His most influential work has been his ten years of composing for his long-standing big band Warriors of the Wonderful Sound which features many of Philadelphia’s best musicians. For this very special performance, he is joined by two saxophone masters: Odean Pope, best known for his two decades with the Max Roach Quartet; and Dave Liebman, who performed and recorded with Miles Davis from 1970 to 1974. In celebration of saxophone legend John Coltrane’s birthday, the Warriors and these specials guests revisit his seminal 1964 recording, A Love Supreme, which they will play in its entirety.

Come and enjoy the world premiere of Qu'ronn's soulful music with hints of pop and jazz, which is nothing like the same old love songs and pop ditties. Qu'ronn's original compositions are inspired by every day experiences, family, friends, and relationships. When asked to list his influences, he immediately wants to list 100 artists from 50 genres. His influences range from the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, to Erykah Badu and Jill Scott to Musiq Soulchild, Bilal, and a host of other old and new artists.
When asked why he is putting on this event now, Qu'ronn says that he has finally found his sound, he knows what he likes, and he knows what he wants to do. A recent graduate of Boys Latin Charter, Qu'ronn will start college in the Fall, majoring in Music Industry and minoring in Marketing at Delaware State University.
Qu'ronn has always been a singer, whether in church or on stage at school and at top theaters around the city. At Boys Latin, he performed in several productions including: The Whiz, The Outsiders, PHLASH,The Tempest, Julius Caesar, and various music showcases.
We at The Rotunda got to know him as he studied with Project Theater Project (PTP) last Fall and performed in PTP's production of RENT: SCHOOL EDITION last December.

CSTS Philly is proud to be hosting two major events in 2012 for Can't Stop the Serenity. What is CSTS?
2012 marks the 7th annual CSTS campaign in honor of the 10th anniversary of Firefly benefiting Equality Now in their 20th anniversary year!!!
We will be featuring a "Special Hell" screening of the film Serenity, which includes audience participation along the lines of Rocky Horror Picture Show & MST3K. The event will also include a live music performance, refreshments, games, merchandise, and a raffle drawing with fabulous prizes.
Advance tickets are $12. Ticket pre-orders are available on our merchandise page until June 27.
