Giovana-Singer, Songwriter & Musician blending her Panamanian roots w/ Jazz, Afro-Peruvian, Latin Pop & world music
Giovana left her native country of Panama twelve years ago in pursuit of the opportunity to live an artistic and creative life as a musician. Her music is a reflection of that journey, built upon her Panamanian roots, and blended with influences of Jazz, Afro-Peruvian, Latin Pop, and world music styles that have inspired her while living and performing in the US.
Hooping by Sarah-Hoop Dancer, Flow Artist, Instructor & hoop maker
Sarah picked up a hoop in 2009 and hasn't put one down since. There are hula hoops in every room of Sarah's house. Hooping by Sarah came to fruition because Sarah wanted to share hooping in the tiny town of Lansdowne. And because happy hoopers of all ages now regularly attend Sarah's classes and workshops, she wanted people to have access to professional-quality, affordable hoops, so Sarah created them as well. Sarah Maccarelli Jordan has over 18 years of classical dance education and experience. She won the 2001 Star Quest Performing Arts Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida. Also an accomplished makeup artist and face painter, Sarah is a creative force to be reckoned with.

Plum Dragoness-Tibetan Bowls meet Dragon Dancing, Movement Theater & Fire Arts
Native to West Philadelphia, she is a multi--talented thespian, dancer, poetess and writer for life. She graduated with a Theater degree from Temple University with an exploratory concentration in Dance, Music and Voice. She is well known for her poetic style, vocal performance and choreographic flair throughout the Philadelphia area and abroad. In addition to her solo work, Gabrielle has collaborated with many artists including the project “Plum Dragoness & the Elements,” known for its fusion of multi-media, live world music infusions and spoken word/lyrical poetry. She independently produced/released the debut studio Album “Renaissance of a Poetess” with her band and Emmy Awarding Winning Music Producer/Composer/Sound Engineer Rodney Whittenberg and the Album of recorded performances (as resident artist) called “Live @ the Rotunda”, Mixed/Engineered by Styx latte. Her written work has been published locally, nationally and internationally. She currently performs with the dynamic trio project known as The Femme-mynistiques.
2nd Opinion- Live Music w/ Philadelphia-based dance-pop circus 2nd. Opinion is a Philadelphia-based dance-pop act exploring the intersection of gender, sex and society in as tuneful a way as possible. The band consists of Joel Chartkoff (percussion and vocals), Zach Webber (keyboards and vocals), Sammy Schuster (keyboards and vocals), Michael Knight (bass and vocals), Mira Treatman (vocals), and Kate Simmer (drums). Stolen Thyme is a neo-traditional Old Time string band based in Colorado Springs and Philadelphia and made up of John Weathers (guitar), Stacy Olitsky (banjo), and Ben Lewis (fiddle).
The music of Stolen Thyme celebrates the everlasting joys of life and explores the dark depths of human nature. The trio embraces the American folk music tradition and transforms it for a modern sensibility. The timeless truths and ancient melodies carried by the ballads and fiddle tunes of Appalachia and British Isles resonate in Weathers, Olitsky, and Lewis’ hypnotic arrangements. Whether chilling the spine with a dusky ballad, entertaining with a meandering, golden melody or lighting the place on fire with a rip-roarin’ barn-burner, Stolen Thyme always shares a transcendent, emotional musical experience with its audiences.
Biographies
Ben Lewis is a fiddle player from Lyons, Colorado and a versatile musician well versed in old-time, bluegrass, jazz, and many other styles. He studied composition, world music and folk traditions at Vassar College and upon returning to Colorado, he quickly earned a place in the vibrant Colorado acoustic music scene as an in-demand fiddle player, though he has also been known to pick up the clawhammer banjo, mandolin, or guitar. After a two year tenure with Colorado Springs bluegrass band Grass It Up, Ben relocated to Lyons, Colorado. When he’s not playing with Stolen Thyme, Ben plays with Corn Yeti (with Grant Gordy, Jake Schepps, Jordan Ramsey, and Eric Thorin), The Hummin’ Birds, and as a guest with many other regional acts. Ben is also an accomplished music instructor. He has taught numerous fiddle workshops and seven years of private lessons, and is currently the music teacher at Lyons Elementary School.
John Weathers and Stacy Olitsky began performing together on street corners and subways in 1994 while hitchhiking through Europe and the Middle East. They even enjoyed five minutes of fame playing live on Turkish Radio in Cappadoccia. Past musical projects include playing in the traditional folk music band Cruel Sister, performing with Mogauwane Mahloele (master drummer and multi-instrumentalist from South Africa), and performing as a duo. Through the late 1990′s and early 2000′s, they were actively involved in the Philadelphia folk music scene and played in venues such as the Lansdowne Folk Club and the Xtreme Folk Festival.
Inspired by a wandering banjo player in the early hours of the morning at her first Philadelphia Folk Festival when she was sixteen years old, Stacy decided that one day she too wanted to be able to play lonesome banjo tunes under the night sky. Since that time, Stacy has been exploring the possibilities of both clawhammer and finger picking styles on the banjo. She studied under John Carlini, who has recorded with David Grisman and Tony Rice, and old-time musician Stan Scott. She is also a knowledgeable and powerful singer of traditional American and English ballads.
John was first introduced to the wide-range and roots of American folk music combing through the stacks of records when he co-hosted a college radio show entitled “Post-Industrial Bluegrass”. At about this same time, John got his first guitar and also met Stacy, who was just getting serious about learning the banjo. His fate was sealed. He has since drawn musical inspiration from Norman Blake, John Doyle, and Doc Watson, among others.

A thoughtful and often funny essay on community, the South and sustainability, "Eating Alabama" is a story about why food matters.

The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society hosts Mike Allen
Mike Allen lives in Roanoke, Va., with his wife and editing assistant Anita, his dog Loki and felines Persephone and Pandora. He's editor and publisher of the critically-acclaimed Clockwork Phoenix anthologies of weird fiction, and thanks to all those who backed his $10,000 Kickstarter he'll be releasing a fourth volume in 2013.
He's also editor and publisher of the poetry journal Mythic Delirium -- soon to be reborn as an online fiction magazine. He was once foolish enough to run for president of the Science Fiction Poetry Association in a contested election and win. His poetry collection Strange Wisdoms of the Dead was picked by The Philadelphia Inquirer as an editor's choice selection in 2006.
Though he's had more than two hundred poems published, his focus is fiction now. His horror tale "The Button Bin" was a Nebula Award nominee in 2009, and his first short story collection, The Button Bin and Other Stories, is forthcoming from Dagan Books. His first novel, The Black Fire Concerto, is slated to come out from Haunted Star Press, a project helmed by John O'Neill of Black Gate. Mike's short fiction has appeared dozens of places, including Interzone, Weird Tales, Beneath Ceaseless Skies and the anthologies Cthulhu's Reign and Solaris Rising 2: The New Solaris Book of Science Fiction.
He also records a mostly monthly column, "Tour of the Abattoir," for the Tales to Terrify podcast.

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present a performance by Philadelphia saxophonist Odean Pope and Brooklyn drummer Andrew Cyrille, two avant-garde jazz giants who will play in duo tonight for the first time ever.
Odean Pope, who has lived in Philadelphia since he was 10-years-old, began his career performing with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown, frequently at Philadelphia’s Uptown Theater. He then went on to work with jazz artists such as Jimmy McGriff and Max Roach, and, in the late-1970s, he formed Catalyst, a funk-infused jazz quartet with Philadelphia-based musicians Eddie Green, Sherman Ferguson, and Al Johnson. He is the leader of the Odean Pope Saxophone Choir and the Odean Pope Trio. About his most recent album, Odean’s List, All About Jazz writes that it “is a compelling reminder of Pope’s relevance as a composer and improviser, one whose talent deserves greater recognition.”
Andrew Cyrille, a Brooklyn-born drummer with Haitian roots, has worked with Coleman Hawkins, Milford Graves, Anthony Braxton, David Murray, Reggie Workman, and Marilyn Crispell. Cyrille was a member of the Cecil Taylor Unit, and he played on Taylor recordings such as Unit Structures and Conquistador, as well as other essential free-jazz albums, like Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra and Marion Brown’s Afternoon of a Georgia Faun. In January, Cyrille’s 21st Century Big Band, a 12-piece ensemble that performs its leader’s compositions, played for the first time at Lincoln Center, in New York City.

Combining vertical flirtation, glittery sequins, feminist history, and a cordless power drill, Invert! premieres at the majestic Sanctuary at The Rotunda on May 16-18, 2013.
Tangle's seven-woman cast travels through simmering duets, a torch-song trapeze solo, a celebration of campy drag traditions, and a tribute to Rosie the Riveter complete with on-stage power tools. Tangle's kaleidoscope of bodies merge, fall apart, and climb to the Rotunda's 40-foot ceilings, interspersed with tango solos by Julliard-trained violinist Caeli Smith.
On Thursday May 16th, Friday May 17th, and Saturday May 18th at 8:30pm, Tangle will bring its new work to the historic and rarely seen Sanctuary at The Rotunda. You are invited to this one-of-a-kind premiere.

Join us for Ian Nagoski's new lecture, titled The Widow's Joy: Pride, Genius, Grief & Lies from International 78rpm Recordings, seamlessly presents recordings from the the mid-1910s to 1950 across a wide geographic area. Musicians, famous and obscure, "classical" and "folk" alike are presented side-by-side as Nagoski describes one life after another of a creative person whose biography was marked by displacement, tragic circumstance, great opportunity, and forces of history beyond their control. In the process, Nagoski shares rarely-heard and deeply touching performances, some joyous and some heartbreaking, while asking questions about the value of life and meaning of music.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Record producer, music researcher, and writer Ian Nagoski specializes in early 20th century recordings in languages other than English. In the past five years, he has produced collections for the Dust-to-Digital, Tompkins Square, Important, and Em record labels, as well as his own Canary imprint (manufactured and distributed by Mississippi Records of Portland, OR). In the past 12 months, he has produced six new LPs of music from India, Anatoalia, Greece, the Levant, and Eastern Europe, as well as a "global view of the rise of rock n roll, 1942-61."

Teens who participate in the slams earn points to qualify for the PYPM Slam Team, which competes at annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival and Slam held in various cities across the U.S with over 50 other youth poetry teams from around the world.

Boston scene veterans Tobey LaRoche and Michael Harrist formed Sol & Kiel to carve out a highly crafted space in which song, instrumental composition, and improvisation coexist. Roaming through various musical landscapes, the ensemble performs on acoustic instruments from all over the world including Malian balafon, Navajo flute, Ugandan adungu, Nepalese bells, Indian shruti box, and a plethora of percussion instruments. Ricardo Lagomasino is a drummer known for his adaptability. He exists within many different musical spheres. He has toured and recorded extensively with his co-led brutal punk, free jazz trio Many Arms, whose most recent album was released by Tzadik. He played on Fugazi bassist Joe Lally's second self-titled record and has done every one of his North American tours since 2007. From 2005 to 2008, Ricardo toured and recorded with Capillary Action, whose sound dipped into just about every musical genre imaginable. He recently joined Washington, DC's Deleted Scenes and will be on their next record to be released by Park the Van. Other projects include RL3, a trio that plays his own compositions, The Sea Around Us, Split Red, Adventuredrum!, Lagomasino/Fishkin, and many others.

Tim Motzer finds infinite joy in diversity. His output as a leader and sideman crisscrosses multiple musical universes, including jazz, fusion, prog, hip-hop, soul, electronica, and the avantgarde. Motzer gets to explore these genres and the intersections between them via his ubiquitous presence in the wildly deep and varied Philly scene, where he can be found working with the likes of DJ/Producer King Britt, spoken word/hip-hop artist Ursula Rucker, and jazz-fusion bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, just to name a few. He also traverses manifold territories through the many albums released on his own 1k Recordings label, including the expansive, laidback song forms of Nucultures, the crunchy jazz-funk of Jazzheads, and the solo soundscapes of his Tilomo alias among others.

Michael McDermott (Mikronesia) is a Philadelphia based composer, musician and producer. His musical tentacles extend into eight sound disciplines: ambient/soundscape recordings and performance, music for dance, music for films, interactive and static sound/media installations, playing keyboards in musical ensembles, composing music for electro-acoustic ensembles, producing other musicians in the studio and the creation of musical/sound design software.
Since the early 2000s Michael has been an active member of the Philaelphia electronic music scene. He has hosted a recurring open forum improvisational electronic music event (now called SHARE Philly) at various venues for the past 10 years. He has played keyboards in live electronic music based bands such as Gemini Wolf and Robots in Disguise.
Michael is a co-founder of the Philadelphia based label and music collective, earSnake. He also performs, writes and produces in the electronic music ensemble Gemini Wolf with Megan Cauley. Since its inception in 2005,Gemini Wolf has performed throughout the US and Europe and released five albums on earSnake. As a solo performer, Michael performs under the moniker Mikronesia on piano and electronics. He has performed in major cities around the world including New York, Toronto, Berlin, Paris and London.
Michael has scored music and sound design for dozens of choreographers over the years. He has created original music scores for movement-based artists such as Perpetual Mvmt<>Snd, Here Begin Dance, Ring Dance Theater, Jaamil Kosoko and Nora Gibson Performance Group.
Jesse Kudler- Born 1979, improvises on guitar, electronics, radios, and tapes and makes solo performance pieces and the occasional sound installation.
Kudler lives in Philadelphia. Current and "recent" projects include: live music with film; sound installation; a duo with Chandan Narayan; a duo with Ian Fraser; HZL, an environmental electronics duo with Tim Albro; duos with Chris Cogburn and Christian Weber; Benito Cereno (with Dustin Hurt, Chandan Narayan, Tim Albro, and Ian Fraser); Tweeter, a treble-intensive noise trio with Alex Nagle and Eli Litwin; and various ad hoc groupings. Kudler is the co-founder and co-Director (with Ian Fraser) of the Philadelphia Sound Forum.
He performed as part of the 2012-13 Cage: Beyond Silence festival, 2011 Sonic Circuits Festival, 2010 No Idea Festival, 2008 Dartmouth Festival of New Musics, and the 2007 Phoneme Festival.
NB: "Kudler" rhymes with “muddler.” Many friends refer to him as "the Kud."
The Event Horizon concert series is a Philadelphia, PA based concert series featuring Ambient, Electronic, Experimental and Space Music.

EXPANDED 40TH STREET SUMMER SERIES KICKS OFF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND with Brooklyn Qawwali Party (performing & reworking music of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)!
(Philadelphia, PA) - University of Pennsylvania, University City District (UCD), and The Rotunda are pleased to announce the 2013 (and newly-expanded!) concert calendar for the annual 40th Street Summer Series, the free outdoor performance series in University City.
Scheduled for the last Saturdays in May to September, the 40th Street Summer Series will transform the 40th Street Field into a family-friendly center of global sounds and good vibrations.
These free outdoor performances will feature internationally-renowned ensembles including Brooklyn Qawwali Party (performing/reworking the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), the whimsicalPhiladelphia Ukulele Orchestra, the Millennial Territory Orchestra (performing the music of Sly and The Family Stone), Spaceship Aloha(featuring Man Man's Chris Powell), and more to be announced.
All concerts will be held at the 40th Street Field, the beautiful green space adjacent to the Walnut West Free Library at 40th and Walnut Streets. All shows begin at 6pm.

Saturday May 25 | Brooklyn Qawwali Party
Brooklyn Qawwali Party is a thunderous 11-piece brass band from NYC that reworks 700 year-old Pakistani Sufi Music (called Qawwali; think gospel music goes to Pakistan) into a sound that gets folks dancing, shaking, sweating, and even whirling! Paying tribute to one of the world's great vocalists, BQP formed to honor the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, reworking his thunderous songs for this eclectic orchestra. Funky, smart, and loving, BQP captures the joyful spirit of this Pakistani folk music in a unique instrumental blend of jazz and Qawwali. It's a good time, it's from the heart, and it's like nothing you've ever heard.
A singer does not acquire the nickname "The Voice From Heaven" for no good reason. And anyone that has ever heard Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan knows this moniker to be fitting. Yet Nusrat was more than a singer; he was an ambassador of Sufi/Islamic culture and art, as well as the modern seed of a seven-hundred-year-old lineage of qawwali singers. In his all-too-brief life, he transformed the folk music of Pakistan into something ready for - some would say craved by - global audiences.
While alive Nusrat attained the stature and respect of artists like Bob Marley and Fela Kuti, and yet, outside of his own forward-thinking projects (alongside Michael Brook, Peter Gabriel and Eddie Vedder), little has evolved the qawwali form. Until we consider Brooklyn Qawwali Party, that is.
Qawwali music, which includes a deceptively simple arrangement of harmonium, tablas, handclaps and numerous vocalists, is extremely complex in presentation. The music is not, however, complicated to listen to. Audiences are immediately drawn in by the lush textures of vocals, and the repetitive themes underlying each song, which may last for fifteen or twenty minutes. Like life, qawwals create songs that move in waves and express numerous and contradictory emotions simultaneously.

Opening the evening will be Members of Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture's resident takht ensemble:
Hafez El Ali Kotain, an accomplished master percussionist, is fluent in both Arab and Latin rhythms - a fluency he honed in his native countries of Syria and Venezuela. He began studying the doumbek in Syria at the age of seven, first performed on stage at age nine, and went on to study with master Syrian percussionist Hady Jazan, winning the national percussion competitions in Syria for five consecutive years. In Venezuela he studied percussion at the TMV Institute for Music in Valencia, where he also taught a variety of percussion styles blending Arab and Latino music to youth. Kotain has toured with Syrian singer George Wassouf in Canada and the US, and has performed in Philadelphia with acclaimed artist Sting and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Kotain has worked with Al-Bustan for over four years as a performer and teacher in various school and community-based programs.
Kinan Idnawi joined the High Music Institute in Damascus, Syria in 2003 where he studied oud with Azerbaijani expert Askar Ali Akbar and graduated in 2008. Idnawi has since accompanied Marcel Khalife in his Al-Mayadeen Ensemble in Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Austria, and Lebanon, and has played with the Qatar Philharmonic, under the direction of world renowned Maestro Lorin Maazel. He toured with the Qatar Philharmonic in 2009, and performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Theater des Champs-Elysees in Paris, La Scala in Milan, and Teatro Massimo in Palermo where he played the Arabian Concerto composed by Marcel Khalife. In 2009, he won first place in the International Oud Competition in Beirut, Lebanon.

Subadhra Ramadurai and advanced training from the late Tiruvarur Smt. Alamelu Ammal & late Tiruvarur S. Balasubramanium (an A grade artist from Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India). She is well known for her melodious music, great command over the divine instrument through different slides, gamakas, varying strokes and unique fingering techniques and adherence to tradition.Bhuvana Kannan was selected as a Veena Artiste by the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, and performed at many prestigious sabhas (fine arts events) in India. She has performed many concerts for Doordharshan TV, India for music & Bharathanatyam dance programs. She formed the Pancha veena group & the Tristate vainika group. She also organizes Veena Festivals in Tristate area. Aparna Kannan: Aparna Kannan has been learning veena from her mother Mrs. Bhuvana Kannan since childhood. She is a well known veena artist in the NY/NJ area. She has performed many solo concerts, accompanied her mother and performed many duet concerts. She is also part of Pancha Veena Group, and has won competitions in NJ and Cleveland. She is also a vocalist and was initially trained by Pooja Satish, Aparna Satish and advanced vocal lessons from Smt. Sulochana Sampath. Dr. Laxmisha M. Sridhar: Dr. Laxmisha M. Sridhar is a scientist by profession, who has multidimensional artistic interests. He was initiated to music at a very young age in the form of Yakshagana by his musician parents. Dr. Sridhar was relatively late to enter the world of Carnatic music in his twenties as a student and performer. He was trained in mrudangam by Bangalore Praveen (disciple of Palghat Mani Iyer) for several years while pursuing his Ph.D. degree at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Over the past several years, Dr. Sridhar has performed for several concerts, Jugalbandhis (duets) and Bharatanatyam dance programs. He has accompanied local artists and several visiting artists such as Dr. Balamurali Krishna, Maharajapuram Ramachandran, Pattabhiram Pandit and Vidyabhushana and Nagavalli Nagaraj from Bangalore. Subhang Srinivasan: Subhang is a well known Ghatam artist in the NY/NJ area and has been learning south Indian percussion since 2001, from Sankara Academy of music and arts, founded by ghatam maestro Sri. Subash Chandran. He had his ghatam arangetram in August 2009, where he accompanied eminent violin vidwan Sri. Vittal Ramamurthy. Since then Subhang has performed in numerous concerts accompanying seasoned artists such as Sri. Maharajapuram Srinivasan, Sri. Delhi Sunderrajan and Sri. TS Krishnamurthi and several tri-state artists in vocal and instrumental concerts in the U.S. He has also performed as ghatam accompanist in various sabhas during 2010 and 2011 December music seasons in Chennai, India.Admission is FREE
