Puppet Uprising Year-End Cabaret and Cheap Art Bazaar
TWO NIGHTS! Dec. 2nd and 3rd at 8pm. $5-$10 Suggested donation
Featuring experimental theater, dance and puppetry by:
idiosynCrazy productions // Sarah Lowry (Missoula Oblongata) & Beth Nixon (Ramshackle Enterprises) // The Agave Opera Company// Adelaide Windsome // Charlie Sarks // The Ragdoll Engine // Musical guest Matthew Schreiber // Snacks, local crafts and cheap art for sale!
idiosynCrazy productions presents: A Big Enough Grief: Directed by Jumatatu Poe with movement, text and performance by Jungwoong Kim, Jumatatu Poe and Will Robinson. Costumes by Katie Coble and music by Margel Overton. A Big Enough Grief is inspired by Lesley Mitchell's abstraction of Astor Piazzolla's song, Balada para un Loco, in her book titled the same. The work was first presented in the Philadelphia International Festival for the Arts in a collaboration with Philadelphia Center for the Book.
The Agave Opera Company performs Narcissus & Echo By craig Hendrix: A short American composition based on a short Greek myth, performed by a small Philadelphian ensemble. In English. The Agave Opera Company is from North Philadelphia. This is their second original work, following up their performance of Act IV of Missoula Oblangata and Puppet Uprising's Antony and Cleopatra earlier this year.
Charlie Sarks, an accomplished local theater artist, performs his first puppet show ever!
Sarah Lowry, Beth Nixon and accordionist Matt Schreiber are collaborating on a new piece of clown/puppet/dance theater to be performed in full at The Rotunda on Jan. 15, 16 and 17. Treehouses. Houseboats. Fracking. Mill Creek, Immortal Jellyfish...! For this cabaret they'll share with you some snippits of what they are cooking up to get you thirsty for the big January show! Beth and Sarah are currently artists-in-residence at the 40th St. A.I.R. program and have been creating theater and other weird things separately for many years, now they join forces to blow your mind.
Adelaide Winsome aka Geppetta performs: The Blue Piece: Geppetta is a queer fabulist, puppeteer, and multimedia artist. She creates puppet theater and performance art inspired by classic fables and fairy tales, occult myths and symbolism, street art, and surrealism infused with a pension for social/ environmental activism and feminist sensibilities.
The Ragdoll Engine presents: Preparedness Eulogy: A being arrives, ready in the case of emergency, armed with a suitcase's dream... The Ragdoll Engine is composed of several artists from varying disciples who range from electronic musicians to Rockettes. Their work has varies from dance, puppetry, clown and radio plays. The characters they create are often ripe for interruption; our puppet shows are stories for grown children and are often performed first on the street. Overall we look to create an uncanny experience for our audience; participation is welcome. Responses have included, "I'll never look at a banana the same way again," "Where did you come from?!" and, "Are you passing out the acid at your show?"
AND between acts: More of the awesome accordion action of Matthew Schreiber!

RENT SCHOOL EDITION
Book, Music, and Lyrics Jonathan Larson
Two Acts
Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT SCHOOL EDITION is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, RENT SCHOOL EDITION follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city. They include Mark, a filmmaker and the narrator of the story; his former girlfriend, Maureen, a performance artist; Maureen's lover, Joanne, a public interest lawyer; Mark's roommate Roger, a musician; Mimi, an exotic dancer, with whom Roger falls in love; Tom Collins, a computer genius; Collins' lover, Angel, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former member of the group who, after marrying into a wealthy family, has become their landlord. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
This adaptation has been carefully done, working with the Larson estate to retain the dramatic intent of the groundbreaking rock musical, and consists of minimal changes to language and the removal of one song ("Contact") to make it possible for many schools to perform this piece.

Tori Ensemble
Korean classical and experimental music
“Amid all the painful attempts to modernize traditional music there sometimes comes a work that reinvents traditional music with such authenticity, power and originality that all you can do is drink it in with grateful ears.” – Washington Post
The Tori Ensemble represents a collaboration among some of the most respected musicians of the Korean classical tradition and the New York avant-garde scene, transcending musical borders in its acclaimed work that mingles jazz, new music, and ancient Korean traditions ranging from shamanistic rituals to pansori vocals. Composed of Korean masters and leading names from New York,s cutting-edge music scene, the group features Yoon Jeong Heo (geomungo-zither), Erik Friedlander (cello), Kang Kwon Soon (vocals), Young Chi Min (daegum-flute, changgo-drum), Ned Rothenberg (clarinets, shakuhachi-flute), and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion).
Director Heo Yoon-jeong is an active geomungo soloist and composer. Her talents cut across various musical genres, expanding the possibilities of geomungo and Korean music by bringing together different genres ranging from traditional music, impromptu music, and contemporary music. She studied Korean classical music at Seoul National University and earned a Ph.D in philosophy of art from Sungkyunkwan University’s Dept. of Eastern Philosophy. She has played in the Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra, and learned the sang geomungo under Han Kap-deuk, who is officially recognized by the South Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration as the world’s leading player of that instrument, and is his designated successor.
In 2007, she received a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation for a residency at the Asian Cultural Council New York, where she formed the Tori Ensemble and organized rousing solo performances at the New York Asia Society and Smithsonian Premier Gallery in Washington DC. Their previous performance at Crossroads in 2009 was part of the group’s first full North American tour.

Kalamandir Dance Company-Classical Indian & contemporary fusion
Kalamandir Dance Company is a (501c3) contemporary dance ensemble that uses the vocabulary of classical Indian dance to explore new spaces of artistic expression. Instead of diminishing the foundation of our classical styles, we look to investigate their communicative potential when merged with Western dance traditions. Using Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Capoeira, Flamenco, Modern and Ballet training, our dancers converse with movement and create dialogue with expression. We are driven by creativity, human emotions, and a desire to be released from the four walls of our daily existence. Our movement vocabulary aims to create a reachable area for all people to participate and communicate.

CIAN NUGENT
WILLIAM TYLER
ZILLIONS
Curated by Chris Forsyth
Cian Nugent is a guitar player and composer from Dublin, Ireland who combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s & '70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school into a deeply personal style. His music boasts an orchestrated and fully instrumented sound that is playful and eerie at the same time. In the past he has toured with people such as Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, Micah Blue Smaldone, Ben Reynolds, Nalle, The Family Elan, George Stavis, Jozef van Wissem, C Joynes, Peter Delaney, Thinguma*jigSaw and James Blackshaw throughout Europe and the United States.
William Tyler is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, a town where guitarists are as common as television sets or pigeons. At an early age, he began playing and recording with artists that resided at the fringes of the country and folk vernacular, such as the Silver Jews, Lambchop, and Cortney Tidwell. He also found himself doing session work with artists as diverse as country legend Charlie Louvin and soul singer Candi Staton. All the while, Tyler was at home working on fragmentary guitar pieces and tape collages under the moniker the Paper Hats, calling on the spirit of Sandy Bull and the early Siltbreeze catalog. In 2008, his longtime friend and sometime collaborator Volker Zander released a Paper Hats lp "Deseret Canyon" on his Apparent Extent imprint, and the two toured in Europe. Now Tyler has released his first album under his own name, "Behold the Spirit" (Tompkins Square), a collection of acoustic and electric guitar works intertwined with open form audio landscapes and delicately arranged instrumentation. Equal parts Appalachian drone and ambient noise, "Behold the Spirit" is a series of homages to ancient melodies, dead languages, and ghosts. Live, Tyler has collaborated or shared bills with Michael Chapman, Yo La Tengo, Lambchop, Eric Carbonara, David Daniell, Rhys Chatham, Wooden Wand, Paul Metzger, Mountains, Steve Gunn, among others.

presents:
An Azerbaijani Mugham Workshop w/ Jeffrey Werbock
Jeffrey Werbock will give a presentation of traditional Azerbaijani mugham improvisations on various native stringed instruments. Mr. Werbock has been giving these presentations for 37 years to audiences all over the world. His primary work is giving lecture demonstrations at colleges, universities, academies and museums, mainly in America and Europe. He has also given solo concerts in Azerbaijan, where he is widely known for his passionate love of their traditional music.
The instruments are:
The Turkish style oud, derived from the Arabic ud, which is an adaptation of the ancient Azerbaijani barbat, a fretless wood faced lute type string instrument plucked with a plectrum. The oud has a soft, deep muted sound with low sustain.
The tar, a double chambered skin faced fretted lute type stringed instrument plucked by a plectrum. The tar has both a deep and bright sound with strong sustain.
The kamancha, a vertically held spike fiddle, with a round skin faced resonator, played with a bow, that produces a very vocal quality sound.
Mugham evolved from earlier forms of ancient eastern art music, including Arabic maqqam, the Islamic call to prayer, and ancient oriental Hebraic chant. There are also elements of Indian raga, and the structure of mugham melodies is influenced by the ancient tradition of the bard / minstrel reciting from memory the great epic legends of the Caucasus and other neighboring localities.
Jeffrey Werbock will present a program of instrumental solo improvisations based on traditional Azerbaijani mugham, played on oud – fretless wood face short neck lute; tar – fretted skin face long neck lute; and kamancha – skin face spike fiddle.
Azerbaijani mugham is monophonic modal music, highly microtonal, meter free, densely ornamented, composed of complex melodic lines that are somewhat improvised according to the eastern tradition of theme and variation, and convey a mix of sorrow and joy, exhaltation and lament, and an overall sense of both antiquity and otherworldiness.
Mr. Werbock has been giving presentations for well over three decades and has performed often at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Asia Society, World Music Institute, and presents lecture demonstrations at colleges and universities all over the English speaking world. He has been awarded an honorary degree by the National Music Conservatory of Azerbaijan, in Baku, and was recently sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan to perform a solo concert.

About Diaspora:
The ethnic dispersion of the musical seed has forced tradition to redefine itself again and again. This sowing of cultures has brought to the world a sound filled with tradition, and at the same time reinvents the genre.
World music, however vague of a genre, is constantly fusing its classical conventions with an ever-growing palette of American cultural impressions. While The Diaspora Series showcases the most innovative music of this anthropological voyage, it is the social and community gathering that the series denotes. Bringing many communities together to share the spirit of dispersed folklore through song and dance.
For the past three years, The Diaspora Series has presented a curatorial exploration of sound and creative vision. The inclusion of visual arts and education into the program initiates an exchange of ideas throughout the performances and guide the audience to understand where the music came from, and where the music is going.
