Event Horizon
presents
performance artist The Great Quentini
Northern Valentine
Delicate Monster
The Event Horizon concert series is a Philadelphia, PA based concert series featuring Ambient, Electronic, Experimental and Space Music.
The Great Quentini
Quentin Davis is The Great Quentini. He is a sculptor and a performance artist who makes his costumes and musical sculptures out of found materials. He has shows in which he wears costumes, plays these musical sculptures, and tells humorous stories; acting out the parts that defy words. These stories are often from his life experience.
Northern Valentine
Northern Valentine is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based ambient/drone collective anchored by husband and wife, Robert and Amy Brown.Their music is largely improvisational and is often set to original films that the collective has created. Coaxing sounds from electric and acoustic sources, they weave meditative drones and soundscapes with "barely there" post-rock instrumentation to create a tapestry that Phil McMullen (Terrascope Online) refers to as "minimalist ambiance at its best. Heartfelt, soulful and affecting, like gazing into a scrapbook of memories".
Delicate Monster
Both Art Cohen (guitar) and Steve Bowman (synths) love to argue about what makes good music-with each other and with anybody else who feels as passionately as they do. Through Delicate Monster, they make their arguments in sound. When Art and Steve disagree with each other, it's a consequence of their divergent musical backgrounds. Art is rooted in psychedelic guitar,Berlin-school spacemusic, and American folk. He's been a fixture on the Philly music scene for 25 years-you may know him as half of the duo The Ministry of Inside Things (with Chuck van Zyl). Steve has a musty degree in Music from Harvard, where he first encountered the Buchla. He draws his influence from classical music and radical composers like Ives, Stockhausen, Subotnick, Monteverdi, Bach, and Ligeti. (Their musical tastes do overlap with the Grateful Dead and Captain Beefheart). Art pushes Steve to let the music be clear and simple and to groove on the repetition. Steve pushes Art to surrender to his weird side and luxuriate in the complexity of counterpoint and the thrill of abject dissonance. Playing together off and on for 20 years, Art and Steve have managed to merge their stylistic differences into a novel musical language that is Delicate Monster.

Pangaea: When The Continents Were One is a multi-media opera presented by Philadelphia based label and music collective, earSnake. The music and story for the opera were written by composer and sound artist Mike McDermott (Mikronesia) over the past 15 years.
Pangaea: When The Continents Were One will be premiered on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11) at The Rotunda in Philadelphia, PA. The multi-media opera will be presented by a 17 piece ensemble of strings, horns, flute, percussion, piano, electronics, guitars and voice. Sets, costumes, life sized puppets and masks are being designed by Liza Goodell of Spiral Q Puppet Theater and Tigre Bailando. In addition to the ensemble of musicians, singers and human puppets, Nico Dominguez (of Klip Collective) will be presenting images from the story that will be digitally projected and manipulated on stage. Pangaea's mix of world, chamber, electronic and rock music plus the blend of real life and digital visuals will make this premiere a truly modern spectacle of sight and sound.
The story is a new mythology about the first humans who lived on the super continent Pangaea. On one giant continent the first tribes of man lived a simple life style. Over time the tribes began to embrace technology and turn away from their natural animal like ways. Recently the super continent of Pangaea is undergoing tumultuous environmental change as the continents begin to split into the continents we know today. Floods, volcanic eruptions, storms, changing seasons, wild fires and other ecological disasters begin to plague the simple people of Pangaea. The tribes begin to blame each other for displeasing the gods who have brought about these tumultuous changes. As tensions between the tribes increases the people of Pangaea are on the brink of an all out war.

8:30 PM - 10:30 PM
ensemble is a quartet of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei) developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains grounded in this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West.
Name: The ensemble is named for the Alash River, which runs through the northwestern region of Tuva. The Alash River has also inspired a couple of Tuvan songs which carry its name.
Background: All members of Alash were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, first learning from their families, and later becoming students of master throat singers. In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a group called Changy-Xaya. They practiced in the damp college basement on Kochetovo Street, and soon became the resident traditional ensemble on campus. At the same time they learned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues), they began to forge a new musical identity. They introduced the guitar and sometimes even the Russian bayan (accordion) into their arrangements, alongside their traditional Tuvan instruments. They experimented with new harmonies and song structures. The effect is an intriguing mixture of old and new.
Influences: The musicians are inspired by the music of their grandparents, great-grandparents, and the great musicians of Tuva and Central Asia. At the same time they are influenced by such western artists as Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix. Yet the Alash musicians never sacrifice the integrity of their heritage in an effort to make their music more hip for an American audience. Rather they look for contemporary ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music.
Alash in America: Alash's inaugural U.S. tour was sponsored in 2006 by the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, they have returned to tour extensively, playing to enthusiastic audiences and presenting workshops to eager students of all ages. The Washington Post described their music as "utterly stunning," quipping that after the performance "audience members picked their jaws up off the floor." (full review). A brochure for Alash's K-12 workshops is on the contact page.
Collaborations: Members of Alash enjoy working across musical genres. They have collaborated with such diverse groups as the innovative jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra, the bluegrass/fusion/jazz band Béla Fleck and Flecktones, and the classical Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Student Producers Program. They are guest artists on the Grammy-winning holiday CD "Jingle All the Way" by Béla Fleck and Flecktones.
Awards: Both the Alash ensemble and individual members have consistently won top honors in throat singing competitions. The ensemble was awarded first prize in Tuva's International Xöömei Symposium competition in 2004. At the Fifth International Xöömei Symposium in 2008, three Alash musicians swept the top prizes for individual throat singing, and the fourth took top honors for his duet performance with his wife. In 2007, Alash member Bady-Dorzhu Ondar was named People's Xöömeizhi of the Republic of Tuva, the youngest person ever to receive this prestigious award. In 2009, Alash member Ayan Shirizhik was named a Merited Artist of Tuva. Even Alash's American manager, Sean Quirk, was named a Merited Artist of Tuva for his contribution to Tuvan culture. In addition, Quirk and all Alash members play in the Tuvan National Orchestra, which has won both first prize and grand prize in the All-Russia National Orchestra and Ensemble Competition.

Awesome prizes
You know what a poetry slam is, and maybe you know about story slams, too. Now it’s time for Philadelphia’s first-ever SMUT SLAM, a fast-paced night of storytelling based on real life, real lust, real sex. The theme for this SMUT SLAM is "I had no idea..." (tales of surprise and discovery)
SMUT SLAMMERS sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute piece of smut/sex/erotica, based on their real lives and ideally relating to the theme of "I had no idea", and a lucky eight to ten names will be drawn at random. There will be a team of 3 to 5 judges - interested amateurs, storytellers, theater people, writers, and anyone who loves sex stories.
NOT A SMUT SLAMMER? Don't worry. The audience is in for a good time at SMUT SLAM! Sit back and enjoy. All we ask is:
- No interrupting. - No heckling. - No necking.
SMUT SLAM creator and host Cameryn Moore is the award-winning writer and performer of Phone Whore and slut (r)evolution. These one-act solo plays will run back-to-back at The Rotunda on Sunday, November 20.

the Gate series
Featured this month:
True Experimental Music. Join us for a night of experiments, in the empirical sense, about sound. We invited nine artists to re-imagine the familiar space of The Rotunda for an evening of sonic provocations. The night will unfold four parts: Sergei Tcherepnin and Woody Sullender, (2) FUN, (3) Scott Allison and Joo Won Park, and (4) Cotton Poodle (Sam Cusumano / Eugene Lew). Each group was proposed the same basic question – how can we construct space and forms using sound as the medium? The only restriction was that it had to have a set duration and be performable – in other words, no installations. What will happen? Will the experiments succeed or fail? We don’t know – but we’re excited to find out.

ABOUT THE SERIES
"Eve of The Last Migration" is a series of All-Ages events which take place periodically throughout the year combining bands with theatrical arts on the same bill.
The types of bands and arts are based more on the similar sort of mood they evoke than any specific sort of genre. All our events are ALL AGES, as we feel that no one should be banished from the world of music and punished solely due to their age.
The Rotunda is the main venue in which we host this series.
The Little Bar is our sidekick.

For this performance the Improv Ensemble will feature its 7 veteran members (saxophonists Steve Davit & Kyle Press, trombonists Connor Przybyszewski & Tyler Mack, guitarists Eric Sanderson & Jake Hager, and keyboardist Erica Corbo), and collaborate with members of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic during their set.
Admission: $5 suggested donation
