  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Event Horizon presents Bent Noise, Dan Malloy, and Staer
  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Event Horizon presents Bent Noise, Dan Malloy, and StaerBent Noise (AKA Scott Armstrong), emanating from the Philadelphia region, creates glitchy circuit bent soundscapes with an Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) and a saxophone case filled with Eurorack Synthesizer modules plus supporting electronic gadgets. Bent Noise first performed live at NEEMFest 2019 in Homer, NY. Since then he has performed at synth meetups in Philadelphia and at Smithville Synth Night (Smithville, NJ). He has also live streamed on Electrozone (Ithaca, NY), Nick’s Virtual Garage (NJ), Algorave and Bent // Broken Circuit Bent festival streams since 2022. He also pops up at Modular on the Spot (MOTS) Philly and open mic venues. His obsession is experimenting in circuit design and circuit bending to generate interesting sounds. The Noisy Alien Communicator (NAC) circuit he has used in past performances is documented and illustrated in a science fiction short story collection entitled The Noisy Alien Communicator: and The Visible Spectrum. Past performances are available at here.

Dan Malloy loves music….sometimes too much. Having been a Philadelphia based guitarist for 30 years, he waited 10 years before ever performing out live for he wanted it to be just right. He also feared he would embarrass himself for not being able to tune by ear. Ironically enough dan still can’t tune by ear nor does he wish to play like how others play. Always on a quest for new sound, dan has never taken the easy route. Instead of learning guitar proper through schooling dan went to over 2900 shows in 30 years and watched, studied, chatted and learned from his heroes. In that time he picked up the pieces he needed to teach himself the craft he so desperately wanted to learn. What will tonight’s show sound like we won’t know til dan takes the stage. Cause for over the last year plus dan no longer plays with an agenda but with his heart. Will it be acoustic? Will it be electric? What tunings will be incorporated? All to be decided that night. Won’t you join us for this adventure?

Under the pseudonym ST∆ER, the work of Ian R. Staer juxtaposes analogue synthesizer textures with spare acoustic piano melodies, conjuring vast aural landscapes from a concise tonal vocabulary:

“…a rich, fully formed musical environment we will want to visit over and again.” — Chuck Van Zyl, Stars End Radio

ST∆ER‘s latest album “Equilibrium”, mixed by Grammy award winner and recent Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails, Tweaker), is currently available at https://staerbandcamp.com.

  • 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM BRIGHT BULB SCREENINGS, Free Double Features Every Second Thursday of the MonthFollow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramJAMES EARL JONES MEMORIAL DOUBLE-FEATURE!THE BINGO LONG TRAVELING ALL-STARS & MOTOR KINGS (1976, directed by John Badham, 110 minutes, U.S.)END OF THE ROAD (1970, directed by Aram Avakian, 110 minutes, U.S.)- - - - -With the great actor passing away in September at the age of 93, Bright Bulb hopes to honor James Earl Jones' passing by remembering his work beyond STAR WARS and THE LION KING. For an actor who could bring humanity and depth to roles from a sanitation worker to Shakespeare, Jones was well-respected yet decidedly under-used in the 1970s. After 1970's Oscar-nominated performance in THE GREAT WHITE HOPE (in a role he'd played on Broadway) it would be four years before he'd play another leading role on the big screen, working with Diahanne Carroll in the 1974 working class dramedy CLAUDINE. Highlights from the rest of the decade include playing a pirate pal of Robert Shaw in SWASHBUCKLER, an African witch doctor in EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC and an Arab chief in the Marty Feldman vehicle THE LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE. Bright Bulb's October show will be featuring two of the more substantial roles from Jones' early career that show-off the actor's range and remarkable presence.- - - - -Produced by Berry Gordy and Motown Productions, 1976's BINGO LONG oddly remains the most prominent Hollywood film on the Negro Baseball League. It's a fictionalized story, based on the acclaimed novel by William Brashler, that gives the charismatic Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones a pair of star-worthy roles in a big budget studio film.Williams is Bingo, a flamboyant pitcher who is tired of being exploited by the team's owner (Ted Ross, The Cowardly Lion from THE WIZ) who teams up with the educated power hitter Jones to form their own barnstorming team made up of disgruntled Negro League players. The owners will use any means to thwart these baseball rebels, climaxing in a game with the players' freedom at stake. The cast is rounded out by the great Richard Pryor, Mabel King, Mama from “What's Happening” and Ken Foree from DAWN OF THE DEAD.When Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor lay on the charm, no audience can resist. The film lively script, good nature and fast pace made the BINGO LONG a sizable hit and shot by cinematographer Bill Butler, fresh of his work on JAWS, sends the film over-the-top in sheer entertainment. Thelma Houston brings her joyous vocals to a pair memorable tunes on the film's soundtrack. BINGO LONG was the debut of director John Badham, who would go on to direct SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and WAR GAMES.“Bingo Long is the sort of movie that sends you out feeling happy about the world.”George Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette- - - -Hailed at the time as being one of the most audacious of the era's counter-culture films, Aram Avakian's 1970 feature END OF THE ROAD still packs a wallop. Based on the 1958 novel by John Barth, the film follow Jacob Horner (Stacy Keach), an overwhelmed young university graduate who suffers a spell of catatonia on a train platform. There he's discovered by Doctor D. (James Earl Jones), a mysterious physician who takes Jacob back to “The Farm,” an institute where disturbed patients are encouraged to follow their instincts. Completing his “treatment” Doctor D instructs him to get a job at the local college where he becomes entangled with a troubled married couple (Harris Yulin and Dorothy Tristan).END OF THE ROAD is the blackest of comedies before it takes it's tragic final turn, the film contains a visual trip that could only be post-2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and unforgettable performances, none more vivid than Jones as the inscrutable puppet master of this mayhem.“Even with 40 years to grow numb to the barrage of modish rhetoric about the collective American psyche unleashed in End of the Road, this unruly 1970 portrait of post-counterculture casualties and chaos remains an unsettling viewing experience.”Violet Lucca, Film CommentFollow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramAdmission is FREE

    ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Gene Coleman is a composer, musician and video director, who has created over 70 works for various instrumentation and media. Central to his work is the inventive use of sound, image and time, and the desire to create experiences that expand our understanding of the world. Since 2001 he has explored the global transformation of culture and music’s relationship with video, science and architecture. He began composing and performing both composed and improvised music in the late 1980s; founded the groups Ensemble Noamnesia, Ensemble N_JP, and Transonic Orchestra; was artistic director of the Transonic festival at the House of World Cultures (Berlin), Director of the American Composers Forum (Philadelphia), artistic director of the Public Art festival Site/Sound (Philadelphia) and a Creative Arts Fellow of the US Japan Friendship Commission. He has an extensive discography of both composed and improvised music, including the False Walls CD Storobo Imp. with Uchihashi Kazuhisa (2004). Since 2016, his works have explored the concepts of Neuro Music and audiovisual composition based on Neuroscience. Gene is a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow and received the 2013 Berlin Prize for Music from the American Academy in Berlin.www.genecolemancomposer.com

Composer Gene Coleman formed Ensemble N_JP in 2001 as a vehicle for his on going work with musicians from Japan. Through concert programs, multimedia works and educational projects, the group explores connections between contemporary and traditional forms of art. N_JP is made up of musicians who work with Coleman on a project-by-project basis. It unites outstanding Japanese and US musicians from the traditional, experimental and contemporary classical music communities, along with guest artists from Europe. Ensemble N_JP has performed in a number of important festivals and venues since it’s inception, these include the I-House of Tokyo, Pitt Inn Shinjuku, Kidailack Art House (Tokyo), The House of World Cultures Berlin, The Dresden Society Theater, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, Lake Forest College, The Chicago World Music Festival, I-House Philadelphia, The Blurred Edges Festival in Hamburg, The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, The Japan Society NY, University of Illinois Urbana, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, MaerzMusik Festival, Warsaw Autumn Festival and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Toshimaru Nakamura’s instrument is the no-input mixing board, which describes a way of using a standard mixing board as an electronic music instrument, producing sound without any external audio input. The use of the mixing board in this manner is not only innovative in the the sounds it can create but, more importantly, in the approach this method of working with the mixer demands. The unpredictability of the instrument requires an attitude of obedience and resignation to the system and the sounds it produces, bringing a high level of indeterminacy and surprise to the music. Nakamura pioneered this approach to the use of the mixing board in the mid-1990’s and has since then appeared on over one hundred audio publications, including nine solo CD’s.This program is supported by mediaThefoundation, The Institute for Music and Neuroaesthetics, and The New Jersey Arts Council

  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Event Horizon presents TR7 aka Taji Ra’oof Nahl, Huron, and Neil Cippon
  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM Event Horizon presents TR7 aka Taji Ra’oof Nahl, Huron, and Neil Cippon

TR7 (aka Taji Ra’oof Nahl) – TR7’s Sonic Celestial Terrain is an electronic experimental music project that morphs cinematic jazz, ambient, & experimental hiphop abstract dynamics. His The Other Sounds of Philadelphia project has shared projects, stages & collaborated with George Lewis, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Hprizm, G. Calvin Weston, Shawn Walker, Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, Nate Totusheck, Julius Masri, 52 Street Planetary Ensemble, Universal Rhythms, Totally Automatic, June Lopez, Mark Dilks, Jerry Kaba, Chaka Benson, among others. Furthermore he is a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow for his interdisciplinary art.

Huron (aka Johnny Lancia) realizes blissed-out ambient works and concerts under the name Huron. His music is filled with heady drones and intriguing rhythms that reflect the natural world – filtered through a variety of modular synthesizers, analog electronics and digital manipulation processes. Lancia’s synthesizers, a paradise of hidden synergies, conspire with the composer to realize a beautiful, untouchable sonic realm – as electrical currents spill out into the world with a charged dreamy glow.

Neil Cippon – Philadelphia based Neil Cippon is an electronic bassist, composer and multimedia artist. Inspired by blues, rock and roots music, Neil toured and recorded with No. 6 records’ King Carcass, an industrial rock band. Carcass took and refined the combined concepts of noise, rock and industrial music. Neil has since taken his music in the direction of ambient, textural, meditative soundscapes. He uses his electronic bass, a collection of pedals and sequenced synthesizers to produce layers of music that allow the listener to relax into their own journey.

  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Itay Dayan's Klezmer Quintet plays Hoffman's FarewellIn 1927 Philadelphia, klezmer musician Joseph Hoffman put to paper a collection of klezmer music. This collection was passed down in his family from generation to generation. In 2023, almost 100 years later his great granddaughter, Susan Hoffman Watts, decided to share that collection with the world and publish it as The Hoffman Book. (available here: www.susanwattsmusic.com/performances)Itay Dayan was very excited about the release of this book, which is another great resource of klezmer music, so he decided to record this album. He chose 8 of the pieces that seemed most interesting, obscure, weird, special and arranged them in different ways- some more traditional than others. Come and hear this work live! Admission is FREE

  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Fire Museum Presents: Loboko
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM

    Fire Museum Presents: Loboko

Loboko are a new group featuring the young Congolese vocalist and guitar virtuoso, Yohni Djungu Sungu, alongside Soukous-Stars legend and master bassist Ngouma Lokito. The group is rounded out by drummer and co-founder Morgan Greenstreet (himself a contributor to Combo Lulo’s debut recording, amongst others). Rooted in a now ubiquitous guitar-driven sound of African soukous that have permeated the greater Caribbean music landscape for up to six decades, Loboko’s take on the ethnic Baluba rhythm, mutuashi, adorns the A-side of their debut single “Kanyunyi.” The B-side stand-out “Ekenge” draws from the seben style. It’s a familiar sound to those sound system aficionadas, an intoxicating guitar combination that has reverberated from the heart of the Congo, through a wave in France’s popular African music industry, and into the discerning selections of Colombia’s Pico culture. Loboko’s original take on these rhythms is quite unique, eschewing any modern production crutches for the raw pedigree of an electrified trio, and ultimately represents a clear window into the group’s authentic live performances.

  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM IT’S TIME TO HONOR THE ANCESTORSPoet-Tree En Motion Arts Showcase and Dia de los Muertos Altar Return on Wednesday, Oct. 30 to The Rotunda in West PhiladelphiaWEST PHILADELPHIA – During the autumn season, it has been believed by many cultures around the world that the veil that separates our world of the living and the land of the dead grows thin. It becomes possible that we may be able to communicate with our deceased ancestors. It has often been a time of celebration. While the secular version of Halloween has lost that element of honoring the ancestors, many still choose to remember and get in touch with their loved ones. It has been an annual tradition for the Poet-tree En Motion seasonal multidisciplinary arts showcase to celebrate this holiday. Join the free event from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia. Artist Lineup: ◦ Zara Tagnac - poetry reading/performance  ◦ Kiriaki Aletheia - poetry reading/performance   ◦ Plum Dragoness - spoken-word/performance poet-tree and dance theatrics  ◦ Bryce Iz Nyce - parkour break dance movement performance  ◦ Jan Jefferies (and guest artists) – percussion-based collaborative grooves steeped in audience participation  ◦ B.A.D. Blaze and DJ Big Cuz - fire and flow arts performance accompanied by live selecta beatzBrujo de la Mancha will also set up a Dia de los Muertos altar in front of The Rotunda. It will be up from Oct. 30 to Nov. 8 and be accessible 24/7.This year, the altar, or ofrenda, is dedicated to all of the cultures that have been affected by genocide in some way, including loss of connection, identity, practice, language, land, and life. We remember the people who died during a genocide, the people who are dying right now, and those who will suffer and die as a result. We also honor those who fight to preserve their cultures for themselves and for future generations.Brujo will also conduct a Dia de los Muertos ceremony on Nov. 1 at The Rotunda.
