Fire Museum Presents: an evening of Hindustani music & Bharatanatyam dance!Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury is an exponent of the Rampur Senia Gharana in the venerated lineage of, Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury and Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury. Primarily trained in the Veen-Kar style of Sitar which draws techniques and idioms of the Veena, Indrajit has been able to carve a niche for himself with his eclecticism and versatility. Indrajit strives for a fine balance of traditionalism coupled with innovation. Indrajit is based out of New York and maintains a rigorous tour schedule across the continents. As an international artist, Indrajit has performed in a range of distinguished venues, notably: Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkata, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, The Lincoln Center, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Toronto National Convention Center, Berlin Indian Embassy, Concordia Arts Poznan, Poland, Chayanaut Auditorium, Dhaka and Ramakrishna Mission Cultural Centre, Kolkata.Uchhal Banerjee is an exponent of the Farrukhabad gharana. He began learning from a young age from his father, Late Nilotpal Banerjee. Later he had the privilege of studying with the great maestro and educator, Pandit Gnan Prakash Ghosh. Following this he continued his study of tabla with Pandit Samar Saha and his current guru, Pandit Abhijit Banerjee. Uchhal has performed in prestigious venues such as Birla Sabhaghar (Kolkata), Vedanta Math (Kolkata), Vivekananda Society (Varanasi and Hyderabad) and has been awarded the top rank from the Government of West Bengal (Vivek Chatra Utsav) in 2012.Kuhokee Kumari Das, disciple of Guru Gargi Chattopadhyay, has trained in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi since the age of six. After completing her Bharatanatyam arrangetram and Kuchipudi rangapravesham in 2011, Kuhokee has collaborated and worked with many talented artists across the globe, such as Kalyan Sen Barat and Padma Bhushan Manna Dey. She has performed in prestigious platforms such as the United Nations General Assembly, Lincoln Center, Ellis Island Medals of Honor, amongst other renowned venues. Apart from dance, Kuhokee is completing her Master’s degree in Biology at Queens College, where she also teaches as an Adjunct Lecturer for Anatomy & Physiology. She is also a published clinical researcher at New York Presbyterian-Queens, exploring better treatment options and helping to create a more compassionate approach to treating those who are terminally ill. In 2019, Kuhokee was awarded a New York City Council Citation for her contribution in Indian classical dance.Admission is FREE but donations are greatly appreciated. Queer Italian artist Ruben Montini is inviting members of Philadelphia's LGBTQIA+ community to join him and come together to create a collaborative art installation that he has called "Altarpieces." This three-day event of artistic creation, is part of a larger project that brings together LGBTQIA+ communities across the globe. In this way Philly joins queer groups of the UK, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, France, Iran, Brazil, displaced refugee groups (and up next Mexico!) as they come together, embrace community and reclaim power through these collective acts of awareness, vulnerability, strength and creation. During this event participants are asked to bring their own articles of clothing to stitch onto the altarpiece which will be covered in the homotransphobic phrases our community has suffered. Why one’s own clothes? Personal clothes are seen in this sense as empirical witnesses of the discrimination suffered, steeped in our fear and in the insults we all bear. Other community members are also welcome to come and bear witness as supportive allies. All are welcome. It will screen at University City's Rotunda, as part of their monthly free "Bright Bulb" film series.TOP SECRET 2024: FILMS YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO SEE showcases films produced to convey private information from the government, the military and big business, instructional or motivational in nature, to carefully targeted audiences of battle forces in the field, small business owners, large corporations and wholesale buyers of products. Spanning from the cold war era through the 1970s, these forgotten reels reveal long hidden and often surprising views of mid-century America. At least one of these films was originally marked as containing "Restricted" information (and for all we know it is still officially restricted!).An irregular series, TOP SECRET programs have been presented by Secret Cinema a couple of times before, but this episode contains all-new material, never before shown by us (or probably anyone else since their original private screenings).There will be one complete program, starting at 8:00 pm. Admission is free.As always with Secret Cinema events, the films will be shown using real film (not video) projected on a giant screen.Just a few highlights of TOP SECRET 2024: FILMS YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO SEE are:POLICE PURSUIT DRIVING (1964, Jam Handy Productions for Chevrolet) - For rookie cops learning how to lay rubber around city streets like Starsky and Hutch, this instructional film provided valuable tips on how to do so safely (or at least a tad less dangerously) -- while also showcasing the excellent handling of Chevy's latest Bel Air model, equipped with optional "police package."Sales cartoon (1952) - "Here's Ted Sanders, salesman of industrial lubricants..." But Ted's clever tactics could help any salesman facing tough obstacles to closing the deal. The minimal, very 1950s animation style helped sell the message to its audience.SUSTAINED OPERATIONS (1947, U.S.A.F.) - A motivational film for members of the newly formed U.S. Air Force, stressing the need for diligence across all of the supporting teams ensuring the constant readiness needed for our air dominance across the Pacific.INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PROGRESS REPORT 1960 (IBM) - Eliot Noyes worked for IBM for 21 years, creating their first corporate-wide design program. In this rare film he discusses those design concerns, showing how they created a practical, unified look for their new computer consoles, paper tape readers and high speed printers.
