Event Horizon SeriespresentsHydrahart, Neil Alexander, and Jason SloanHydraheart - Hydraheart is the new solo project of Megan Cauley. For 10 years she was the primary songwriter, singer, guitarist and noise maker for Gemini Wolf. She recorded four albums and performed regularly in Philadelphia and New York with Gemini Wolf, along with an east coast and European tour. With this new project, she is reconnecting to the process of weaving songwriting and improvisation together. Melody, hooks, and lyrics are nestled up next to drones and noise.Neil Alexander - Jazz pianist, synthesist, and composer, Neil Alexander, began performing and composing in 1974. Always the type of musician who thrives on variety, Neil continues involvement with all manner of projects including: acoustic & electric jazz groups, contemporary classical performances, composing for Modern Dance & theater (since 1984), and various Tribute groups including “The Machine” (Pink Floyd Tribute, 1996 - 2006), “The Mahavishnu Project” (since 2008) and most recently, “Mr. Gone”, focusing on the music of jazz giants “Weather Report” & Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters”. For 15 years, from 1996 - 2011, he performed with his contemporary electric/acoustic jazz ensemble, NAIL, releasing their most recent CD “Tugging At The Infinite” in 2007. This marked Neil’s 4th CD as bandleader. In 2013, Neil realized his long-standing dream of recording a solo piano CD, “Darn That Dream: Solo Piano Vol. 1”, an artistic and critical success. An additional aspect of Neil’s music is his long-standing relationship with electronic instruments, primarily synthesizers. He acquired his first synth in 1978 and never looked back, making those sounds a part of his extensive musical vocabulary. He frequently performs solo in an all-electronic context, incorporating this into a jazz & classical based improvisational format. In search of better ways to realize music quickly, Neil began using Ableton LIVE software. In 2012, he started the Ableton Hudson Valley Users Group, and teaches workshops at the local Library in Newburgh NY. Neil realized there is serious interest in this format after attending the 2012 Electro-Music Festival in Huguenot, NY where he crossed paths with dozens of like-minded performers & composers. He returned in 2013 and 2014, performed multiple times at each festival, engaged in various collaborations, and directed a workshop in generative music, illustrating techniques he developed playing for the Modern Dance classes he’s been working in since 1982. Neil continues to search for new connections in music, combining jazz, classical, fusion, ambient, and electronic styles, into very personal hybrid music. He has 2 more CD’s slated for release - a Live NAIL CD recorded in NYC in 2007, and his first solo, all electronic CD, entitled “Nailgun”. Other current projects include “Le Jazz Electronique”, “Thunderhead Organ Trio”, and “Scene ReSeen” (live electronic music for Silent Films). His work explores immateriality and its connection in memory, systems and the virtual world. Through his performances, sound installations, videos, transmission art works and sound recordings, he examines the need for transcendence beyond the body through a vehicle of visual and aural stimulation. With this dialog, Sloan feels an urgency to evoke a collective experience between the viewer, listener and artist that can bridge the gap between physical and non-physical worlds. In 2001 Sloan co-founded SLO.BOR Media with sound artist & web designer Matt Borghi as a vehicle for their individual releases and a platform for other artists. SLO.BOR Media is primarily a record label, but focuses on a variety of media and forms of distribution. SLO.BOR Media is also quite concerned with packaging, design, new media, sound and conceptual art. Sloan received his BFA from Edinboro University and his MFA from Towson University. In addition to being the recipient of multiple Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Awards, Sloan’s performances, installations, net.art and video works have been exhibited internationally including Berlin, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Kiev, Nagoya, Saint-Petersburg, Toulouse, Lisbon, Uden and Vienna. In addition to releasing over a dozen studio albums and E.P.’s over the last decade on various record labels, Sloan has played live all over the US, Canada and Europe including the influential Live Constructions radio program at Columbia University, STEIM in Amsterdam and Philadelphia’s The Gatherings concert series, one of the country’s oldest continuing ambient and electronic music series. FLOW ARTS AND ART THAT FLOWS WILL ENTERTAIN AT THE ROTUNDAPoet-Tree En Motion Presents ‘Salutation To The Art Of Flow!Celebrating Movement-Based Arts June 10 In West PhiladelphiaThe flow arts will take center stage when the seasonal performing arts showcase Poet-tree En Motion presents “Salutation to the Art of Flow!” 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 at the Rotunda in West Philadelphia. The audience will feast on a variety of flow arts, which are movement-based arts centered on prop manipulation. These performances will combine with other art forms not specifically of the flow arts genre, but which also exhibit a flowing quality to the work.Poet-tree En Motion is the brainchild of multi-award-winning Philadelphia performance artist and poet Gabrielle de Burke, whose stage name is Plum Dragoness. These free events, ongoing since 2007, present regional multidisciplinary artists while giving the community a chance to shine on the open mike and open stage.“Poetry in motion is a lot of different things,” de Burke said. “It’s not just stuck on a page. It’s not just stuck on a stage. It’s moving in time. All of the artists are expressing poetry but just in different forms. I want the event to be an expression of the many different ways in which poetry is present in our lives whether it’s music, dance, art or visual performance.”De Burke will give three flow arts performances at the June 10 event. In the collaborative piece, “Trinity Tribal Stomp,” she will wield a staff while Michelle Armour performs with poi and Angela Armour hoola hoops. During de Burke’s solo spoken-word piece, she will flow with a sword. She will also present a performance of the Yang Shi 36 fan form, which is based in the martial/internal arts of tai chi chuan and kung fu. “Most of the movement flow that I do is influenced by the traditional Chinese martial arts and internal forms, based in Taoist mysticism,” said de Burke, who has been practicing since 1999. “But I am not presenting it like a martial arts form. I am doing it slow and flowing.”Various indigenous cultures of the past have danced with objects that were also considered weapons or tools of divination, de Burke explained. “I think the flow arts (movement) is a coming back to the various cultures that have used these props and objects in sacred dance and that then became secular in their communities.”Another performance at the event will be by the group 7 Textures that’s hot off the heels of its Ghostly Circus at the Laurel Hill Cemetery. The artists will reprise a choreographed piece featuring the art of S-staves and buugeng. These are Japanese martial arts illusion flow tools that spin and create a kaleidoscope effect. Musicians Tom Phoolery and Josh the Architech of Research and Development will provide an avant-garde soundscape with analog synthesizers while the group performs.The rock group the Dead Bishops is a teenage power trio that will perform songs inspired by Led Zeppelin, the Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Visitor 10 is an MC who will collaborate with the audience in a storytelling hip-hop style. And VJ Spooky will enhance the entire show with his multimedia visual projections.“Working with an object is one kind of flow,” de Burke said. “But someone who works as an MC is using a mental type of flow. Someone who is using their prop is going to flow through their prop. The MC is going to flow through the microphone. Dr. Charles E. Gannon’s Nebula-nominated novel, Fire With Fire, won the 2014 Compton Crook Award and was a national bestseller. The next volume in this hard sf interstellar epic, Trial By Fire, is a 2015 Nebula finalist and national bestseller. Raising Caine, the third novel in Gannon’s Tales of the Terran Republic series, is forthcoming in October, 2015. When a team of well-meaning doctors, gym teachers, rock stars and new-age healers try to pry his eyes open, what will he see? The answer may be in the ice cream. And the ice cream will certainly be served in CONES. CONES is a new solo show written and performed by Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews and directed by Mason Rosenthal, two Philly theatre artists who both happen to be visually impaired. For the past two years they’ve toured their bedroom play, "Nobody’s Home", to more than 50 bedrooms around the U.S. and created five original promenade performances for Rutherfurd Hall, a historic mansion in rural New Jersey. Though Mason and Morgan’s works are always shaped by their quirky combo of rare retinal conditions, CONES is this team’s first foray into making the line between sightedness and blindness visible (and invisible) onstage. The evening features a new electronic work by Bhob Rainey and a performance of Keroaän, Ian M Fraser and Reed Evan Rosenberg's laser, strobe, and sound performing Artificial Intelligence platform.ABOUT THE ARTISTS ***********************************KEROAÄN is a collaborative research project between IAN M FRASER and REED EVAN ROSENBERG exploring composition of electronic music by an artificial intelligence. Pieces are diffused in real time with no human intervention whatsoever as the machine agent manipulates the qualities of chosen non-standard synthesis and microsound techniques. In live diffusions, the machine agent additionally controls laser apertures and an array of strobe lighting which collectively act as a visual projection of the structure of its performance. A distinctly non-human logic pervades the resultant arrangements of chaotic sounds and high-intensity lighting, presenting an immersive, alien environment. Check out some video HERE!Bhob Rainey (b. 1972), a soprano saxophonist and composer, performs as a solo artist, as one half of nmperign (an improvisational duo with trumpeter Greg Kelley), and as leader of the BSC, an eight-member ensemble that uses both acoustic and electronic instruments. He formed the BSC to address the inherent challenge of performing longer works with multiple improvisational artists. After 18 years spent living in Boston, with stints in Chicago and New Orleans, Rainey has returned to his hometown of Philadelphia. June 19, 22 & 23, 8PM shows. Part of Philly's 2015 SoLow Festival. The Medium Theatre Company presents CONES, an action-comedy game show about vampires, vision loss and ice cream. A blindfolded boy has stories to share—secrets about eating cereal, wearing capes, avoiding bright lights and learning how to fly. When a team of well-meaning doctors, gym teachers, rock stars and new-age healers try to pry his eyes open, what will he see? The answer may be in the ice cream. And the ice cream will certainly be served in CONES. CONES is a new solo show written and performed by Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews and directed by Mason Rosenthal, two Philly theatre artists who both happen to be visually impaired. For the past two years they’ve toured their bedroom play, "Nobody’s Home", to more than 50 bedrooms around the U.S. and created five original promenade performances for Rutherfurd Hall, a historic mansion in rural New Jersey. Though Mason and Morgan’s works are always shaped by their quirky combo of rare retinal conditions, CONES is this team’s first foray into making the line between sightedness and blindness visible (and invisible) onstage. This year the programming will run from May-September, with performances falling on the last Saturday of each month (May 30th, June 27th, July 25th, August 29th, and September 26th).In the past the Summer Series has featured internationally-acclaimed acts such as the Millennial Territory Orchestra, Man Man, and the Sun Ra Arkestra— to play free outdoor concerts that capture the soul of the neighborhood. This year, the schedule will expand to include dance, live theater, music, and a few surprises. The Summer Series brings business during the typically slow summer months by increasing patronage at nearby retailers and building upon the existing vibrancy of 40th Street, while providing entertaining, enriching and safe outlets for families, visitors and students.
