Despite starting out in Chile, far from the center of world cinema, gay writer/director/actor Sebastián Silva has created a successful string of rich and provocative films, including two Sundance award winners, 2007's THE MAID and CRYSTAL FAIRY & THE MAGICAL CACTUS with Michael Cera and Gaby Hoffman.
His latest is 2023's ROTTING IN THE SUN in which Silva and “internet influencer” Jordan Firstman plays fictionalized versions of themselves.
Playing “Sebastián Silva” Silva presents himself as a frustrated, suicidal filmmaker who has relocated to Mexico City to paint. Encouraged by a friend to seek solace at a gay sex resort, he meets Jordan Firstman (as himself) a hopelessly self-obsessed social media star who seems to have no personal boundaries. Silva distances himself from the YouTube star yet the pair find themselves thrown together after producers at HBO encourage Silva to work with the impossible Firstman.
ROTTING IN THE SUN takes a number of shocking turns from there, making the darkest of comedies out of the pair's situation, finding humor in this most modern of contemporary landscapes. To say more would spoil the fun.

2018's TYREL is a devastating look at the subtle micro-aggressions bubbling beneath the surface at a typical bro-tastic weekend.
A group of thirty-something old friends get together for a birthday weekend at a cabin in the Catskills. New to the group is Tyler (Jason Mitchell, Easy-E from STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON), a genial up-start restaurateur, who as the only African American in the group, finds himself slowly alienated by the high-energy competitive spirit of the partying “Bros.”
Although it doesn't take any fantastical turns, TYREL drew comparisons to Jordan Peele's modern horror classic GET OUT with the story's visceral unease cutting deep, despite the rural beauty and seeming innocuousness of its setting. Michael Cera has a memorable turn as the late-arriving rich friend who turns the party up a notch and THE WIRE's Reg E. Cathey appears in his final film role
