Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving,
collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music, led
by visual artist Erik Ruin, recently lauded by the New York Times for
his "spell-binding cut-paper animations." Erik manipulates intricate
paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors t...o
create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless
charged with meaning, merging with music that ranges from dark
atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble
include a rotating cast of Philly's finest musicians, who have
collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to Chris Forsyth to
Spires That In the Sunset Rise.
Asimina Chremos is a
dancer/artist with interest in the continua between form and flow,
nature and culture, repetition and change, and discipline and pleasure.
She began her artistic career as a ballet dancer and has since moved
into improvisational and experimental dance, often performing with
improvising musicians. Her aesthetic is also reflected in works of
freeform lace crochet. Asimina is an experienced writer and editor and
works with artists and creative people on the language they need for
grant applications, press releases, etc. She is currently based in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
Hatchers is the electronics
and drums duo of Michael Roy Barker and Brian Osborne. These two have
developed a strong vocabulary after ten years of collaborating in George
Steeltoe Ensemble and Sharks With Wings. Thier music explores
influences from noise to post rock to free jazz to improvised music.
Barker uses modified and homemade electronic instruments, drum machines,
and modular synth, with Osborne playing a stripped down hybrid drum kit
augmented by tapes, contact mics, bells and gongs. They are currently
working on a full length LP that will be out in the fall of 2015.
Osborne has studied with percussion master Milford Graves, and performs
in the doom/free jazz duo The Gate. He has performed with Robert Beatty,
Tom Blancarte, Daniel Carter, Tim Dahl, Peter Evans, Paul Flaherty,
Frode Gjerstad, Michael Thomas Jackson, Oliver Lake, Joe McPhee, Dan
Peck, Kevin Shea, Tamio Shiraishi, Panagiotis Spoulos, Nate Wooley,
Spencer Yeh, Wretched Worst, Blastocyst, Paper Legs, Reverse Mouth,
Dosdedos and more. In 2003 he founded his own record label, Heat
Retention Records.
Shaina Kapeluck & Jim Strong- Kapeluck
and Strong's performances are based around musician/radio
personality/song collector Shaina Kapeluck's sprawling knowledge of
traditions from the British Isles which she has refered to as an "Early
Music Salad" and visual and performing artist Jim Strong's invented
musical instrumentation.
Performances can resemble a live
radio program. Often times they articulate a thread in a folk tradition
and their relationships to contemporaneous culture and politics.
Intimate storytelling is transmitted through juxtaposition in aesthetic
from live foley sound and tape music to tradition fiddle music and a
capella vocals.
