  • 1:00 PMIn-person! The Properties of Free Music: Joe Morris Workshop presented by People's Music Supply
  • 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

1:00 PM – 5:00 PMPeople's Music Supply is proud to offer this workshop from living legend Joe Morris, an outstanding educator and world renowned musician. This workshop will last roughly 3-4 hours and will be followed in the evening by a concert featuring Joe and friends.

FROM JOE!In this workshop we will examine the non-harmony based materials that are consistently used and redefined by improvising musicians. Includes the study of four seminal methodologies, (Unit Structures, Harmolodics, Tri-Axiom Theory and European Free Improvisation), with the focus on how they inform individual and group improvisation. Students will perform compositions that reveal improvisational properties and use that material to improvise. Tickets will be available shortly, sliding scale $25 to $50. Ticket sales will be capped at 20, so please act fast. Workshop tickets include complimentary entrance for the concert. This program is presented with support from The Rotunda, Philly Music Factory, and Free Range concert series.

  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Joe Morris Trio + Inverse and Obverse presented by People's Music Supply
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM  Joe Morris Trio + Inverse and Obverse Presented by People's Music Supply

Joe Morris will be joined by former student and philly klezmer/experimental crossover star Dan Blacksberg. The always wily Carlos Santiago rounds out the trio. Their set will be played freely.

    Joe Morris- Guitar

    Dan Blacksberg- Trombone

    Carlos Santiago- Violin

Inverse and Obverse is a quartet rooted in a phenomenological approach to creative music. like the great philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, we are examining the skin of the world, the very nature by which objects and sensations emerge from an interconnected web of being. It is this tenderness to the moment, and each other, which allows us to play poly-idiomatically.

Tickets are $5-20, no one turned away for lack of funds. This concert is sponsored by Philly Music Factory.

Al Pacino plays the innocent Francis Lionel aka “The Lion,” a sailor just back from sea. The unlikely pair meet while hitch-hiking outside of San Francisco, where Max recruits The Lion two join him on a cross-country ramble, on their way to opening a carwash in Pittsburgh. One of Hackman finest showcases, SCARECROW is full of the sort of scrappy realism people love in 1970's cinema, loaded with unglamorous locations and quirky characters. Hackman and Pacino emerge at the end as one of cinema's unforgettable screen couples. Shot by the legendary Vilmos Zsigmond (cinematographer of DELIVERANCE and THE DEER HUNTER).“This is a jewel of American cinema.”- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian“Hollywood movies have rarely spoken such tough and tender truths.”- Keith Uhlich, Time Out- - - -The classic prison break-out film spiced with the era's spirit of protest, 1969's RIOT brings together Hackman with football legend turned actor Jim Brown. Red (Hackman) is the big cheese among the prisoners of an Arizona prison. One day guards are taken hostage in an attempt to protest prison conditions but this is only a ruse so Red can lead an inmate escape. Cully (Brown), only serving a short stint, wants no part of action but gets drawn in by the manipulative Red.Loosely-based on an actual incident and featuring inmates of Yuma Territorial Prison, RIOT finds Hackman gaining authority as a screen presence and features one of Jim Brown most-convincing roles as the ambivalent recruit to Hackman's scheme.Follow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramAdmission is FREE

Danny Hirsch: lived in Philly since I was a child. And music has been such a tool for my life. I started out by playing drums and a piano around the age of ten, then as I got older music became more therapeutic, and my creativity grew. I play by ear… Guitar, piano, and drums. And I make my music on the spot/improvised. The music comes to me in my head then onto paper or just the sound waves. The music I create is like visuals to me. Not only do I hear the music but I feel and see it as well, thus my “stage name” Vision101.

The concerts are always free and open to all.WeirdSmith, aka Dan Gray, is a retired Navy Aviation Electronics Technician who repaired audio technology, amongst many other systems, involved in the hunting of submarines, now seeks to provide journeys of aural crevasses he calls “Sonic Spelunking”. He looks for interesting sonic spaces and shares the exploration of them. Having never played the same thing twice, each journey is a new and hopefully enjoyed shared experience.Dimension Step is the synth focused version of Dorety Brothers. It is much about moods, atmospheres, some noise and melodies too, deriving our sounds from standard synths, modular analog synths, digital piano and even some electronic percussion. Ambience to syncopation and arpeggiation, we tend to improvise within a loose framework of tempo, key, mode and time signature or maybe absence of time signature and tempo. Collective influences come from the spacier moments found in prog giants like YES, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd and King Crimson as well as textures and moods from Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind, Kraftwerk, Eno and even some jazz rock space jammers like Ozric Tentacles. Even more we find we influence each other when we jam. That’s the root of the creativity which stems into ideas we can use as a basis to recreate, yet it is never exactly the same music produced even if the base idea remains the same. It keeps it fresh for the audience and us.Ombient, aka Mike Hunter, focuses on ambient/drone/experimental music that is improvisational in nature, representative of the feeling of the moment in which it is performed and of the subtle feedback between the audience and the performer. He uses various vintage and contemporary analog synthesizers, and modular synthesizers. Mike is also the host of the radio show Music With Space on WPRB 103.3 FM out of Princeton, NJ, the vice-President of The Electro-Music Performers Organization (TE-MPO) and the current President of the Board of Directors at The Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project based in Montgomery County, PA.Admission is FREE

    Akkarai Sisters:

The Akkarai Sisters, S Subhalakshmi and S Sornalatha, are among India’s most distinguished musicians today. Hailing from a family with a rich musical background and having learnt under illustrious gurus, they hold the unique distinction of being amongst the foremost artistes in the field as both vocal & violin duelists, as well as accompanists for many eminent musicians.

The Akkarai Sisters are amongst the most celebrated names in Carnatic music. Their music have taken them to every corner of India and every part of the world. They have released numerous albums, debuting with Subhalakshmi’s unprecedented ‘Abhishta Varada’, featuring her vocals recorded over with her own violin accompaniment at age 15. The sisters have also carried forward the family’s legacy of imparting Carnatic music to several disciples, many of whom are skillful performing artistes themselves.
